The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has seven officially named sedan generations: W116 (1972–1980), W126 (1979–1992), W140 (1991–1998), W220 (1998–2005), W221 (2005–2013), W222 (2013–2020), and W223 (2020–present). For U.S. shoppers and owners, those production spans translate approximately to the 1973–1980, 1980–1991/92, 1992–1999, 1999–2005, 2006–2013, 2014–2020, and 2021–present model years, respectively.

The dates need qualification: Mercedes-Benz launched cars at different times in different markets, production and registration years can overlap, and engine, body-style, and equipment availability varied by country. The generation code is therefore more useful than a badge such as S 500 or S 600 when identifying a car.

Before the S-Class name: the 1951–1972 ancestors

The S-Class did not appear from nowhere in 1972. Mercedes-Benz identifies the postwar Type 220, introduced in 1951, as the beginning of the direct upper-luxury lineage. The 220, 220 S, 220 SE, 300 SE, and related W108 and W109 sedans are important ancestors of the modern flagship.

The distinction matters when discussing the history accurately:

  • 1951: The postwar Type 220 begins the direct lineage identified by Mercedes-Benz.
  • Before 1972: Mercedes-Benz uses several model and series designations for its upper-luxury sedans, including the W108 and W109 families.
  • 1972: The 116 series becomes the first generation officially marketed under the name S-Class.

So, “the S-Class began in 1972” is correct only if it means the first official use of the S-Class name. The broader flagship-sedan lineage reaches back to 1951.

1. W116: the first officially named S-Class, 1972–1980

The W116 is the foundation of the modern S-Class identity. Mercedes-Benz presented it in 1972 as a new upper-luxury sedan built around an integrated safety concept rather than simply a powerful, well-equipped automobile.

Key W116 innovations

  • Integrated safety design: Mercedes-Benz highlighted a protected fuel tank, a safety steering wheel, dirt-resistant side glass, large lighting units, and ribbed rear lamps intended to remain visible when dirty.
  • Electronically controlled ABS: Anti-lock braking made its world premiere in the 116-series S-Class in 1978.
  • 300 SD turbo-diesel: Introduced initially for North America in 1977, the 300 SD was the first production passenger car equipped with a turbo-diesel engine.

The W116 is best understood as Mercedes-Benz’s first explicit statement that its flagship sedan would serve as a technology demonstrator, particularly for occupant protection and active safety.

U.S. model-year note: U.S. examples generally begin with the 1973 model year and run through 1980. Engine choices, diesel availability, and equipment were market-specific, so a European W116 and a North American W116 should not be assumed to have identical specifications.

2. W126: aerodynamic design and the production airbag, 1979–1992

The W126 arrived in 1979 and became one of the longest-running S-Class generations. Mercedes-Benz combined a more aerodynamic shape with weight reduction, new light-alloy V8 engines, and deformable plastic bumpers in place of traditional chrome bumpers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the W126 matters

  • More efficient construction: Aerodynamic optimization and lighter materials became central to the flagship’s design.
  • Plastic impact bumpers: The deformable bumpers were intended to improve impact resilience while reducing weight.
  • Driver airbag: Mercedes-Benz identifies a production-vehicle world premiere for the driver airbag in a 126-series S-Class in 1981, combined with a front-passenger seat-belt tensioner.
  • Broad V8 range: The generation is closely associated with its V8 sedans, although six-cylinder, diesel, and market-specific powertrains also existed.

The W126 marks a major shift from relying primarily on crash structure to adding increasingly sophisticated restraint systems. It is also the generation for which the S-Class reputation for long production runs and formal, aerodynamic design became especially visible.

U.S. model-year note: The global production span is commonly given as 1979–1992. U.S. model-year catalogs generally cover the 1980s through 1991 or 1992, depending on body variant, engine, market timing, and registration.

Do not confuse the sedan with the coupe: The related two-door C126 is part of the broader 126 family but is not the same sedan body style. Parts, interior components, glass, and body panels may differ even when the series number is shared.

3. W140: the large flagship and ESP debut, 1991–1998

Mercedes-Benz introduced the 140 series in 1991. The W140 grew into a particularly substantial flagship, with extensive equipment, high levels of acoustic refinement, and a range that included six-cylinder, V8, diesel, and V12 engines depending on the market.

The long-wheelbase version added 100 millimeters to the wheelbase, continuing Mercedes-Benz’s practice of offering a more spacious rear compartment for chauffeur-driven or executive use.

Major W140 milestones

  • Large, highly equipped flagship: The W140 emphasized size, rear-seat room, electronic features, and isolation from the road.
  • S 600 V12: The top-of-the-range S 600 established the W140 as a V12 flagship in markets where it was offered.
  • ESP debut: Mercedes-Benz says electronic stability control premiered in February 1995 in the 140 series. It was standard on the top-of-the-range S 600 Coupé at its introduction.

That last detail is important. It would be inaccurate to say that every W140 sedan had ESP as standard from the beginning. Equipment changed by body style, model year, engine, and market.

U.S. model-year note: U.S. cars are commonly listed as 1992–1999, even though the broader production span is usually stated as 1991–1998. Late production, sales timing, and registration differences account for much of that apparent discrepancy.

4. W220: a smaller exterior with more electronic systems, 1998–2005

The 220 series was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in late September 1998 as the successor to the W140. Mercedes-Benz described the new sedan as 75 millimeters shorter than its predecessor while retaining comparable passenger space and the expected luxury positioning.

This was not a simple reduction in size. The W220 put greater emphasis on electronic systems, integrated control modules, and new forms of preventive safety.

W220 technology highlights

  • PRE-SAFE: Mercedes-Benz identifies the S-Class 220 series as the debut application for PRE-SAFE in 2002. The system detects critical driving situations and can prepare restraints and other occupant-protection systems through reversible actions before a possible collision.
  • 4MATIC availability: All-wheel drive became available on selected models and in selected markets.
  • Broader powertrain selection: Depending on region, the W220 was offered with V6, V8, V12, and diesel engines.
  • Electronic integration: The generation expanded the role of electronically managed chassis, comfort, safety, and infotainment systems.

Because W220 equipment varied considerably by country and facelift year, “available” or “optional” is safer language than “standard” unless a specific market brochure confirms the equipment.

U.S. model-year note: North American model-year references generally run from 1999 through 2005. The exact equipment and engine combination still requires checking the vehicle’s VIN and original market documentation.

5. W221: assistance technology and the first S-Class hybrid, 2005–2013

The 221 series debuted in 2005 with a more expressive exterior and a luxury-focused cabin. It also made electronic driver assistance more prominent in the S-Class experience.

W221 features and milestones

  • COMAND controller: The generation introduced a central controller for the updated COMAND infotainment system.
  • Active night vision: Night-driving assistance became part of the S-Class technology story.
  • DISTRONIC PLUS: The adaptive cruise and distance-control system added more capability than earlier cruise-control systems.
  • Additional assistance: Depending on market and equipment, the W221 offered Brake Assist Plus, PRE-SAFE Brake, blind-spot assistance, lane-keeping assistance, and speed-limit assistance.
  • S 400 HYBRID: Added in 2009, it was described by Mercedes-Benz as the first luxury-class vehicle with a hybrid drive and the first production passenger car with a lithium-ion battery.

Later W221 drivetrain changes included BlueEFFICIENCY gasoline models and a diesel S 350 BlueTEC in selected markets. The engine badge alone does not establish the complete specification; the same or similar name can refer to different powertrains in different regions.

U.S. model-year note: U.S. model years generally run from 2006 through 2013. Hybrid, diesel, V8, V12, and AMG availability varied by year and market.

6. W222: digital luxury and expanded preventive safety, 2013–2020

The W222 generation arrived for the 2013 era and carried the S-Class further into camera-, radar-, and software-supported luxury. Mercedes-Benz USA identifies U.S. S-Class sedans from 2014 through 2020 with the V222 designation in its historical and brochure material.

What changed with the W222

  • Digital cabin: Large displays and a more software-centered interface became defining parts of the interior.
  • Expanded assistance systems: The generation continued the S-Class emphasis on integrated driver assistance and occupant protection.
  • PRE-SAFE PLUS: Rear-impact preparation and related technologies entered series production in the 222 series.
  • Lighting technology: Partial high-beam systems and other advanced lighting functions were added during the generation.
  • Electrified variants: Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions joined conventional gasoline and diesel models in selected markets.

For U.S. buyers, the 2018–2020 facelift years are useful reference points. Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2020 brochure lists S 450, S 560, S 560e, AMG S 63, and AMG S 65 sedan variants. That list should not be treated as a universal global lineup, and equipment could change without notice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

U.S. model-year note: The cleanest U.S. sedan range is 2014–2020. A listing that says “2013 S-Class” may refer to a launch, production, or registration situation outside the usual U.S. model-year sequence, so verify the VIN and market.

7. W223: the software-centered S-Class, 2020–present

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the W223 generation in 2020. The series includes short-wheelbase W223 and long-wheelbase V223 versions, with the exact body and equipment mix depending on market.

W223 hardware and software

  • MBUX: The cabin moved toward a software-centered user experience with large displays, voice interaction, and rear-seat interaction features.
  • Rear-axle steering: Available rear-wheel steering improves low-speed maneuverability and can contribute to high-speed stability, depending on configuration.
  • AIRMATIC: Air suspension is a central part of the W223 chassis specification.
  • E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL: This more advanced active suspension system is available on selected configurations rather than universally standard.
  • Integrated assistance: Mercedes-Benz highlights extensive driver-assistance integration along with redundant preparation for steering and braking functions.
  • “Third place” interior: The launch presentation positioned the cabin as a space between home and work, with displays and rear-seat features playing a larger role than in previous generations.

U.S. model-year note: U.S. model-year references begin with 2021 and continue into the present model range. Exact engines, trim names, software features, and assistance functions depend on model year, country, and option package.

The 2026 S-Class update: still W223, not an eighth generation

As of the supplied Mercedes-Benz research current on August 12, 2026, the S-Class remains in the W223 generation. Mercedes-Benz announced a substantial refresh on January 29, 2026, with ordering scheduled to begin January 30, 2026. The update is not a new W224 generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2026 update includes:

  • New powertrain strategy: Mercedes-Benz announced a V8-related powertrain update as part of the refreshed range.
  • MB.OS integration: New computing and software architecture support the updated vehicle systems.
  • Fourth-generation MBUX: The infotainment and interaction platform receives a major hardware and software revision.
  • MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO: The newest assistance capability was initially introduced in China, so availability should not be assumed for every market.
  • U.S. availability: Mercedes-Benz USA lists a 2026 S-Class Sedan.

In other words, a 2026 car is a refreshed W223. The generation code is unchanged even though the powertrain, computing hardware, interface, and assistance technology may differ substantially from a 2021 model.

How to identify the correct S-Class generation

If you are buying parts, a repair guide, an owner’s manual, or restoration components, do not search only for “Mercedes S-Class.” That label spans more than 50 years of cars with very different electronics, engines, suspension systems, body dimensions, and safety equipment.

Record these details before ordering:

  1. Generation or series code: W116, W126, W140, W220, W221, W222, or W223.
  2. Model year: Use the title and registration documents, but remember that model year is not always the same as the build year.
  3. VIN: Use the vehicle identification number to confirm the exact car and parts application.
  4. Engine: The badge is not enough. Record the engine designation or the complete VIN-based specification.
  5. Body style: Confirm that the part is for the sedan rather than a related coupe or another body.
  6. Wheelbase: Short- and long-wheelbase cars can use different body, interior, suspension, and trim parts.
  7. Market: A U.S., European, Chinese, Middle Eastern, or Japanese-market car may have different engines, lighting, emissions equipment, safety systems, and infotainment.
  8. Facelift status: A mid-generation update can change electronics, bumpers, lighting, engines, and interior components without changing the generation code.

Mercedes-Benz owner documentation advises using the VIN when ordering GenuineParts and verifying that safety-critical parts, wheels, tires, and accessories are approved for the specific vehicle. This is particularly important with an S-Class, where a part that appears visually similar may not have the correct sensors, control modules, load rating, or software compatibility.

Repair manuals, parts, and classic ownership

Documentation needs are different across the generations. A W116 or W126 owner may be researching mechanical adjustment, trim, or corrosion repair, while a W220 through W223 owner may also need information about air suspension, electronic modules, calibration, high-voltage systems, and software-dependent features.

For W220, W221, W222, and W223 owners, Haynes currently lists generation-specific guides. A Mercedes-Benz S-Class repair manual can be useful, but only if the listed coverage matches the exact generation, model year, engine, body style, and format you own. A generic “S-Class” search is not sufficient.

For historical research, a Mercedes-Benz S-Class history book can complement the generation-by-generation outline here, especially for collectors comparing the pre-1972 ancestors, W108/W109 cars, and the officially named S-Class generations. Verify the title and edition before purchase because availability changes.

Mercedes-Benz Classic maintains a Genuine Classic Parts program intended to help preserve older vehicles. It is a useful starting point for W116 through W140 restoration research, but availability is not guaranteed for every part, generation, or country.

Mercedes-Benz Used Parts & Services also describes tested original used parts. The referenced operation is European and should not be treated as proof of universal U.S. availability. Confirm delivery geography, warranty terms, stock, and compatibility before relying on it for a repair.

What the generation code does and does not tell you

The internal series code identifies the broad body generation, but it does not provide the complete specification. For example, an S 500 badge has appeared in multiple generations and markets, and the engine, transmission, emissions hardware, wheelbase, electronics, and standard equipment changed over time.

Likewise, AMG versions, hybrid models, Maybach derivatives, and related coupes belong to the broader S-Class story without necessarily sharing every sedan component. A listing that says “fits S-Class” should be treated as incomplete until it gives the series, model year, engine, body, wheelbase, and market.

Common mistakes when dating an S-Class

  • Calling 1972 the beginning of the entire lineage: It is the beginning of the officially named S-Class, not the beginning of Mercedes-Benz’s postwar flagship-sedan history.
  • Using global production years as U.S. model years: The two often differ by one year or more during launches and run-outs.
  • Calling the 2026 refresh a new generation: Mercedes-Benz presents it as a major update to W223.
  • Assuming equipment was worldwide standard: Safety systems, engines, all-wheel drive, hybrids, and assistance technologies varied by country and year.
  • Mixing sedan and coupe fitment: A related coupe can share a series number while using different body and interior components.
  • Assuming an engine badge identifies the car: S 500, S 550, S 560, and S 600 badges changed meaning across generations and markets.
  • Making unsupported reliability or cost rankings: Maintenance expense and reliability depend on age, condition, service history, engine, electronics, and local parts availability; there is no objective “best generation” without defining the buyer’s priorities.

The Bottom Line

The clean identification sequence is generation code, model year, VIN, engine, body style, wheelbase, and market. The W116 is the first officially named S-Class, but the lineage reaches back to the 1951 Type 220. From the W126 airbag and W140 ESP debut through W220 PRE-SAFE, W221 hybridization, W222 digital safety systems, and the software-focused W223, each generation changed more than the badge. The current 2026 car is a substantially updated W223, not an eighth generation.
