BMW’s Panoramic iDrive was the best automotive technology at CES 2025 because it combined a clear everyday benefit with a credible path to production. Honda’s 0 Series offered the most ambitious vehicle-wide software strategy, while Hyundai Mobis and ZEISS showed the most exciting display technology for the future.

The important distinction is that CES showcased very different stages of development: some technologies were close to production, others were prototypes, and some were spectacular demonstrations with no clear near-term consumer path. This ranking weighs usefulness, safety, production credibility, scalability, and evidence—not just how futuristic a vehicle looked on the show floor.

  • Driver-assistance hardware, mapping, sensors, and automated-driving software
  • EV charging, energy management, and vehicle-to-grid technology
  • Passenger entertainment, personalization, and connected services
  • Robotaxis, eVTOL aircraft, and other mobility concepts

The show’s wider automotive story was the transition toward software-defined vehicles: cars whose functions, interfaces, and sometimes driving capabilities depend heavily on centralized computing and software that can be updated after manufacture. Industry coverage identified digital cockpits, autonomous vehicles, and vehicle software as dominant CES themes (Counterpoint Research’s CES 2025 overview).

How we judged the best automotive technology

“Best” does not mean the biggest screen or the most dramatic concept. A useful automotive technology should solve a real problem without creating a larger safety or ownership problem.

Criterion Question
Consumer usefulness Does it improve driving, navigation, charging, comfort, or ownership?
Safety Does it reduce distraction, improve visibility, or make automation easier to understand?
Production credibility Was it shown in a production-intent vehicle or only as a mock-up?
Availability Is there a named vehicle, launch window, market, reservation process, or buying path?
Technical substance Is there meaningful hardware and software behind the demonstration?
Scalability Could the idea work in ordinary vehicles as well as expensive flagships?
Human factors Does it reduce cognitive load, or merely add more information and screens?
Evidence quality Is the claim supported by an official announcement or demonstrated capability?

A prototype is not a production feature, a reservation is not a delivery, and an automated-driving demonstration is not proof of a generally available self-driving car.

1. Best overall: BMW Panoramic iDrive

BMW Panoramic iDrive was the strongest combination of practical benefit, technical substance, and production proximity at CES 2025. BMW described the system as close to production and said it would begin appearing in new BMW models from the end of 2025 (BMW’s announcement).

What BMW showed

The system centers on BMW Panoramic Vision, a display stretching across the lower portion of the windshield. It works alongside a central touchscreen and an optional augmented-reality head-up display. BMW Operating System X provides the software foundation and intelligence layer.

Rather than forcing every task onto a central screen, the interface combines:

  • Information projected into the driver’s forward field of view
  • A central touchscreen for controls and richer content
  • Voice interaction
  • Steering-wheel controls
  • Optional augmented-reality guidance

That combination matters. Drivers should not have to choose between a touchscreen-only interface and a voice assistant that cannot reliably handle every task. In principle, the system can put navigation cues and relevant vehicle information where they are easier to see while leaving more complex interaction to the screen or voice control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it ranks first

BMW’s concept addressed a real problem: conventional center displays can require the driver to look down or away from the road. It was also presented in a form much closer to a production system than many CES concepts.

[True Military-Grade] Car Phone Holder VANMASS [Upgraded Strongest Suction&Clip] Cell Phone Mount for Dashboard Windshield Vent Kit, Truck Cradle Stand for iPhone 18 Pro Max 17 16 15 Android,Ink Black
  • 【True Military-Grade Certified, Ultimate Upgraded Model】Over the past decade of specializing in high-end car mounts, VANMASS have listened to the voices of millions users, rigorously tested to MILITARY GRADE standards (stability, compatibility, flexibility, security, durability). Finally, we overcome all weaknesses to design the Ultimate Model. This item obtained international military-grade shockproof certification No. GZMR220601855501
  • 【Larger Suction Cup, Strongest Suction】The diameter of the suction cup has been increased from 2.5in to 2.8in, and the PU adhesive has been applied to increase the suction power by 44%. Over 85 pounds of suction means even the heaviest phones are secure on bumpy roads. The suction cup is easy to remove and can be washed clean and reused. Attention: Install suction cup on a flat surface, avoiding curves or leather surface
  • 【Multi-Function Phone Stand for Dashboard / Windshield / Vent】Are you not sure which installation would best suit your vehicle? No problem the unit is extremely flexible!!! Dashboard, Windshield even air vent, all places work perfectly!
  • 【Longer & Firmer Hook Clip - Fit 99% vent】Its innovative hooked construction perfectly solves the shortcomings of the previous generation air vent clips which were prone to loosening! Maximum hook length increased by 57%, compatible with 99% Vertical / Horizontal vent. Longer build reduces obstruction of air flowing out of vent. Attention: Hook is not compatible with round, cross, or diagonal car vents
  • 【High-end = Quality Materials + Grandmaster Design】VANMASS car phone mount made of PC+ABS material has passed 4 environmental reliability tests and has a temperature resistance range of -40℉ to 194℉, it is also highly resistant to UV rays (Ensuring reliability even in the sun), and the telescopic pole uses a reinforced sliding rail structure to greatly reduce wobbling during driving. This suction phone cradle obtained CP65 / REACH / RoHS safety certifications

That does not make it automatically safe. A windshield display can reduce glance time if its information design is restrained, but it can also encourage BMW to place more content in the driver’s view. The quality of the final implementation will depend less on the size of the display than on what it shows, when it shows it, and how quickly the driver can understand it.

BMW’s timing referred to future BMW models. It does not mean every existing BMW can receive Panoramic iDrive through a software update, nor does it establish availability across the current range.

Verdict: The best near-term automotive technology at CES 2025 and the clearest example of a show-floor idea with a plausible everyday benefit.

2. Best complete vehicle platform: Honda 0 Series and ASIMO OS

Honda’s 0 Series was more ambitious than a new infotainment system. The 0 Saloon and 0 SUV prototypes presented a vehicle architecture built around software, centralized computing, automated-driving development, personalization, and energy services.

Honda announced ASIMO OS, a vehicle operating system intended for the 0 Series, and said the models were planned for global-market introduction beginning in 2026 (Honda’s global newsroom announcement).

What makes the strategy significant?

ASIMO OS was presented as more than a media interface. Honda linked it to:

  • Advanced driver assistance and automated-driving functions
  • Personalized vehicle settings and user profiles
  • Onboard computing
  • Connected services
  • Home-energy and vehicle-energy management

Honda also announced collaboration with Renesas on a high-performance automotive system-on-chip for future 0 Series models. That is important because a software-defined car requires enough computing capacity, security, and upgrade flexibility to manage functions that would once have been separated across many electronic control units.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The caveat: ambition is not validation

The 0 Saloon and 0 SUV shown at CES were prototypes. Honda’s plans for Level 3 automated driving should therefore be read as a development direction and company ambition, not as a promise that unrestricted Level 3 capability would be available in every market.

The ownership questions are just as important as the technical ones. A proprietary operating system raises issues around update support, cybersecurity, privacy, app compatibility, cloud dependence, and what happens to connected features over a vehicle’s lifetime. Personalization can be convenient, but it may also require more data collection and more complicated settings.

Verdict: The most ambitious end-to-end automotive technology platform at CES 2025, though less proven and less immediately tangible than BMW’s interface.

3. Most promising future display: Hyundai Mobis and ZEISS holographic windshield

Hyundai Mobis and ZEISS demonstrated a holographic windshield display integrated into a Kia EV9. The system uses projectors and a holographic optical-element film to place information in the windshield area without relying on a conventional dashboard screen (Hyundai Mobis’s technology explanation).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CES-era announcement described a mass-production ambition as early as 2027 (Hyundai Mobis’s announcement). Later Hyundai Mobis material pointed to an alliance targeting mass production from 2029, so 2027 should be treated as the original show-era target—not a confirmed delivery date (later company update).

Why the display matters

The technology could eventually reduce the number of separate screens in a cockpit and create different information zones for the driver and front passenger. It represents a shift from large flat panels toward transparent, spatial displays integrated into the vehicle itself.

It is also easy to overstate what was shown. “The entire windshield as a display” does not mean the glass would be continuously filled with usable graphics. The actual system would need to control where information appears, preserve outward visibility, and prevent passenger content from distracting the driver.

Questions production must answer

  • How visible is the image in direct sunlight?
  • Does the system create reflections or glare at night?
  • How does it behave when a projector or sensor fails?
  • What happens after windshield replacement?
  • How are calibration and alignment maintained?
  • Can the system degrade safely rather than leaving confusing partial information?

Verdict: The most exciting display prototype, but not a consumer product and not yet the best near-term ownership improvement.

Planned services included Amazon Music and Audible. HERE announced navigation and mapping integrations involving AFEELA and BMW (HERE’s CES announcements).

The appeal

AFEELA treats the vehicle as a connected software ecosystem rather than a machine with an infotainment system attached. Its proposed AI assistant, entertainment features, and digital cockpit illustrate how automakers may compete on interfaces, services, personalization, and ongoing feature development.

For some buyers, that could make a car feel more adaptable and easier to use. For others, it could turn basic vehicle functions into subscription-dependent services. Connected entertainment may require accounts, data connectivity, and third-party service agreements. Software support, privacy controls, resale access, and what happens when a cloud service ends are central ownership questions.

Reservations also need careful interpretation. A reservation program does not establish delivery, final pricing, subscription fees, long-term reliability, range, ride quality, or driver-assistance performance. The CES-era material does not provide enough current evidence to state those details as settled facts.

Verdict: The most convincing consumer-electronics interpretation of a vehicle, but not the strongest choice for buyers who prioritize established service support and transparent long-term ownership.

5. The autonomous-driving reality check

Automated driving was a major CES theme, spanning sensors, mapping, onboard computing, simulation, robotaxis, and vehicle demonstrations. But “autonomous” is not a sufficient description of what a system can do.

  • Level 2 driver assistance: The vehicle can help steer, accelerate, and brake, but the driver remains responsible and must monitor the road.
  • Level 3 automated driving: The system may take responsibility in defined conditions, subject to operational, regulatory, and geographic limitations. The driver must still be able to resume control when required.
  • Level 4 automated driving: The system can operate without a human driver within a limited operational domain.
  • Robotaxi demonstration: A service and operating model that depends on mapping, remote assistance, fleet management, regulation, and a defined service area—not merely a vehicle feature.

Honda’s Level 3 references belong in the category of announced development plans. A controlled CES demonstration cannot establish that a system works in every weather condition, road layout, traffic situation, or market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Readers should be especially wary of confusing an AI voice assistant with automated driving. AI may handle speech, personalization, navigation, perception, simulation, or recommendations; the label alone says little about which function is actually automated.

6. Most futuristic, least practical: Xpeng AeroHT flying car

Xpeng AeroHT’s concept combined a road vehicle with a folding-wing electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft. It was among the most visually memorable automotive announcements covered from CES 2025 (Counterpoint Research).

It is worth recognizing as a mobility concept, but it should not outrank production-intent vehicle technology. A roadable aircraft must clear difficult hurdles involving aircraft certification, pilot requirements, infrastructure, maintenance, noise, cost, battery performance, and the safe integration of two very different vehicles.

Verdict: The most futuristic spectacle, with the weakest near-term fit for an ordinary car buyer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What CES 2025 got right—and what it exaggerated

CES coverage naturally rewards spectacle: flying vehicles, giant displays, and dramatic concept cars produce better headlines than improved navigation or more reliable software updates. But the technologies most likely to matter are often less theatrical.

Cars are becoming software platforms

BMW’s Operating System X, Honda’s ASIMO OS, and AFEELA’s connected cockpit all point toward vehicles whose user experience can evolve after purchase. That could enable better navigation, personalization, and feature updates. It also makes cybersecurity, update longevity, cloud dependence, and service discontinuation part of the car-buying decision.

Displays are moving closer to the road view

BMW’s Panoramic Vision and Hyundai Mobis’s holographic display show two versions of the same direction: put useful information closer to the driver’s forward view. The benefit depends on restraint. A display that shortens a glance can improve usability; a display that fills the driver’s view with notifications can increase distraction.

Mapping and cloud services are becoming vehicle infrastructure

Navigation is no longer just a static map. It can support route planning, automated-driving functions, simulation, traffic information, and connected services. HERE’s integrations with BMW and AFEELA illustrate the growing role of mapping providers in vehicle software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Personalization brings privacy trade-offs

A car that recognizes occupants and adjusts settings can be more convenient. It may also collect more information about identity, location, habits, voice commands, and preferences. Buyers should ask what data is stored locally, what is sent to the cloud, how long it is retained, and whether features work without a persistent connection.

How to evaluate a CES automotive feature before caring about it

  1. Check the status. Is it demonstrated, announced, a prototype, close to production, available for reservation, or purchasable?
  2. Identify the responsible company. Separate the automaker, supplier, software provider, sensor maker, and mapping company.
  3. Ask what problem it solves. “AI-powered” and “autonomous” are descriptions, not benefits.
  4. Look for operating limits. Check geography, weather, road type, speed, connectivity, and driver-monitoring requirements.
  5. Consider failure behavior. A useful system should remain understandable when a sensor, projector, network, or cloud service is unavailable.
  6. Check lifetime support. Find out how updates, subscriptions, privacy controls, and second-owner access will work.
  7. Separate the show car from the production car. Final specifications, controls, materials, software, and pricing can change substantially.

Final CES 2025 automotive technology ranking

Category Winner Why
Best near-term technology BMW Panoramic iDrive Clear user benefit, multiple input methods, and a stated rollout in new models from late 2025.
Most ambitious platform Honda 0 Series with ASIMO OS Connects vehicle software, automated-driving development, personalization, computing, and energy services.
Most exciting prototype Hyundai Mobis/ZEISS holographic windshield Potentially transformative display technology, but still developmental and subject to major safety questions.
Best software-defined EV showcase AFEELA 1 Places entertainment, connected services, AI interaction, and the digital cockpit at the center of the vehicle.
Most futuristic concept Xpeng AeroHT Memorable road-and-air mobility idea, but farthest from ordinary consumer ownership.

The broader verdict is more useful than a single winner: BMW showed the most credible near-term interface, Honda showed the most complete software strategy, and Hyundai Mobis showed the display technology with the greatest future potential. CES 2025’s automotive story was ultimately about making cars more software-driven—but the winners will be the systems that improve attention, navigation, charging, and ownership without turning every vehicle into a distracting subscription platform.
