There is no evidence-based ranking that proves which ten classic cars are objectively the most reliable or easiest to maintain. The models below are a practical shortlist drawn from published classic-car guidance and model recommendations—not a guarantee that every year, trim, or surviving example will be dependable. For a low-drama ownership experience, the specific car’s condition, parts supply, and access to knowledgeable local help matter as much as its reputation.
What makes a classic car easier to maintain?
Maintainability is not the same as reliability, and neither is a fixed trait shared by every car wearing the same badge. A relatively simple design may make routine jobs easier, but age, past repairs, rust, and use can turn a reputedly dependable model into a costly project. Use these factors to assess a specific candidate:
- Routine-service access: Consider whether common jobs are straightforward for you or a general mechanic, and whether the car’s design suits your mechanical experience.
- Parts availability: Price common wear items and ask suppliers about stock and delivery times. A healthy parts supply is important to painless ownership, as Hagerty UK’s modern-classic buying guide advises.
- Local expertise: Find a mechanic who knows the model, and check for a nearby owners’ club or specialist. Availability can vary substantially by region.
- The exact specification: Confirm the model year, engine, trim, and configuration. A nameplate can cover many generations with different parts and service needs.
- Condition and records: Review maintenance history and inspect the car, including for rust. Hagerty recommends checking what maintenance a high-mileage example has received; a model’s reputation cannot substitute for this review.
- Downtime and repair exposure: Consider whether you can tolerate waiting for a part or a specialist appointment, and whether you have a backup vehicle or roadside support.
The sources behind this shortlist include editorial and insurer guidance published between 2021 and 2025, as well as an older maintenance guide. Their use of “classic” and their coverage differ by market and age range. They do not provide a controlled comparison, a common reliability score, or comparable repair-cost figures. Accordingly, the cars are presented as candidates rather than ranked winners.
Ten classic-car candidates to investigate
These ten candidates have some support in the cited material as reliable, maintainable, or practical classic choices. That support is not equally strong for every model, and it does not establish that every generation is inexpensive to own. Check the particular year and local market before deciding.

Volkswagen Beetle
The Beetle has the clearest maintainability case in this group: sources point to its simple design, enthusiast and parts support, and a model-specific repair manual, How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot. Simplicity does not mean maintenance-free; air-cooled Beetles need regular attention, and the condition of vintage electrical systems matters. Confirm the manual’s edition and compatibility with the car you are considering.
Porsche 911
AARP includes the 911 among classics enthusiasts rate as reliable. That is a model recommendation, not proof that every generation is trouble-free or affordable to service. Identify the exact year and configuration, then confirm that a suitable specialist and parts are available where you live.
Rank #2

Saab 900
AARP also names the Saab 900 among enthusiast-rated reliable classics. Before treating one as a low-cost choice, check local parts supply and whether a mechanic familiar with the relevant version is accessible.
Mercedes-Benz W124
Carbuyer describes the W124 as having a durable reputation and notes its use in service around the world. That history does not remove the costs that can come with maintaining an old luxury car. Inspect the individual vehicle carefully and establish access to the parts and expertise its specification may require.

Toyota Land Cruiser
American Collectors Insurance includes Land Cruiser generations among reliable classic candidates. “Land Cruiser” covers multiple generations, so establish the exact year and version before checking parts, service requirements, or mechanic availability.

Ford Mustang
CarParts.com includes the Mustang among classic daily-driver candidates and notes parts availability for the models it discusses. The name covers a long production span: identify the generation and configuration before assuming that parts access or service needs will match another Mustang.
Plymouth Valiant
CarParts.com also identifies the Valiant as an American candidate. Treat that as a starting point, not a reliability guarantee. Check the specific model year, the car’s condition, and the availability of parts and knowledgeable service in your area.

Chevrolet Impala SS
The Impala SS appears in CarParts.com’s classic-car daily-driver discussion. Confirm which year and configuration the recommendation applies to, then inspect the car and price the parts it needs rather than assuming all Impala SS versions are equally easy to keep on the road.
Jeep Cherokee
CarParts.com includes the Cherokee among its American candidates. Because the name spans different model years and configurations, verify which one you are considering and whether its common parts and experienced mechanics are available locally.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check a car before buying
- Pin down the car: Record its model year, engine, trim, and configuration. Make sure any reliability recommendation or owner resource applies to that version.
- Review the history: Ask for service records and look for evidence that routine maintenance and known repairs were completed. If the car has high mileage, find out what work has already been done.
- Inspect condition and rust: Have the vehicle inspected by a mechanic familiar with classics or the model. A strong reputation does not make an individual car sound.
- Price common parts: Check current availability and prices for routine wear items in your region. Ask suppliers about likely lead times for parts your car may need.
- Locate support: Identify a suitable local mechanic, specialist, or owners’ club before purchase. A car that is well supported in one market may be difficult to service in another.
- Budget for age and downtime: Allow for repairs, upkeep, and the possibility of waiting for a part. The Hagerty classic-car maintenance guidance emphasizes ongoing upkeep; classic-car reliability should not be assumed to match modern-car reliability.
Is a classic a sensible daily driver?
It can be made usable, but daily driving raises the cost of downtime. Hagerty’s daily-driver guidance warns that parts can be harder to find and that a vital failure may leave a car waiting for repair. Before relying on a classic for every trip, consider how you would manage a breakdown, a delayed part, or time in a specialist’s shop. Also weigh the safety and comfort differences between an older car and a modern one against how and where you plan to drive.
Why this is a shortlist, not a definitive top ten
The cited material names classic-car candidates and offers useful ownership advice, but it does not compare ten models under the same conditions. It supplies no common failure-rate data, maintenance scores, or repair-cost figures from which to calculate an objective order. The list therefore does not claim that the Beetle is the single most reliable classic or that the other nine follow in a meaningful rank. Use the recommendations to build a test list, then let the exact car’s records, inspection results, parts situation, and local support decide.
