The biggest dividing lines are the 2010 switch from the GX 470 to the GX 460, and the ground-up 2024 redesign that introduced the GX 550. Lexus’s official releases establish those generation changes and selected updates, but do not provide a complete annual equipment ledger for every model year.

Lexus announced the GX 470 in 2002; the 2003–2009 model-year range is a timeline inference rather than a span quoted in one source. Lexus introduced the second-generation GX 460 for 2010, and the 2024 GX 550 followed as the third generation. First generation: GX 470 (2003–2009)
The GX 470 was the first North American GX. Lexus’s history timeline records its announcement in 2002. The 2003–2009 model-year span is inferred from that announcement and the 2010 launch of its replacement, rather than stated directly in a single cited release.
The defining engine distinction carried into the next generation: the GX 470 used a 4.7-liter V8, which the 2010 GX 460 replaced with a 4.6-liter V8. This guide does not claim a complete year-by-year list of GX 470 equipment changes.

Second generation: GX 460 (2010–2023)
Lexus announced the all-new GX 460 for 2010 as a replacement for the GX 470. Along with the smaller-displacement 4.6-liter V8, Lexus highlighted more power and efficiency, quieter operation, added luxury, a TORSEN center differential and standard 18-inch wheels. The GX 460 remained the second generation through the 2023 model year, based on the chronology leading to the 2024 successor in Lexus’s U.S. archive. Its long run is a reason to check the exact model year and grade rather than assume that all GX 460s have identical equipment.

Third generation: GX 550 (2024–present)
Lexus unveiled the third-generation GX in 2023 as a 2024 model. The redesign moved to the GA-F ladder-frame platform and replaced the GX 460’s V8 with a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 and 10-speed automatic for the U.S. launch. What changed in the 2024 redesign
- Exterior and chassis: Lexus described the GX as redesigned from the ground up, with a squarer profile, wider stance and revised suspension.
- Tailgate: A power rear lift door with a pop-out window became standard.
- Cabin and technology: Launch equipment included a standard 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen, a 12.3-inch multi-information display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Lexus Safety System+ 3.0.
- Off-road grades: The new Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades came with 33-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels and used E-KDSS. Equipment varies by grade, so these details should not be read as standard across the entire GX range.
The 2024 lineup also included Premium, Premium+, Luxury and Luxury+ grades. Lexus’s December 2023 model-year release gave a maximum towing capacity of up to 9,096 pounds, with the rating dependent on grade; it is not a universal rating for every 2024 GX configuration. That later model-year figure superseded the earlier “up to 8,000 lbs” figure in Lexus’s June 2023 unveiling announcement.

What changed for 2025
Lexus’s December 2024 release identified a small set of specific updates for the 2025 model year. The six-grade lineup remained Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, Overtrail and Overtrail+. Lexus’s 2025 GX announcement
- A one-inch suspension lift became standard on Overtrail and Overtrail+. Lexus said this produced a minimum running ground clearance of 9.84 inches.
- Lexus Memory System and a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column became standard across grades.
- The 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 remained rated at 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.
- Lexus quoted towing capacity of up to 9,063 pounds for Premium, Premium+ and Overtrail+, and 9,096 pounds for Overtrail with its standard tow hitch receiver. Use the grade-specific figure rather than treating one maximum as applying to every version.
Are there confirmed changes for every later model year?
No complete year-by-year change list is established by these Lexus releases. The U.S. newsroom archive includes GX entries through model year 2027, including a 2027 announcement dated September 16, 2026, but the archive index alone does not establish each newer model’s equipment or specifications. Check the Lexus GX newsroom archive and the specific model-year brochure or specification sheet for later changes.

For a precise comparison between two GXs, match model year and grade, then check the powertrain, transmission, suspension and off-road hardware, towing rating, cabin and driver-assistance equipment, and standard versus optional features.
