BMW’s official founding date is 1916, and it did not begin making cars until 1928. The distinction matters: the Mercedes-Benz brand itself was formed in 1926, so the companies did not compete under their present identities from the same starting line.
Which is older, BMW or Mercedes-Benz?
It depends on what “older” means. Benz’s 1886 patent is the earliest automotive milestone in the comparison; BMW’s official company founding date is 1916; and the Mercedes-Benz brand was created after a merger in 1926. Those dates describe different things, not a single like-for-like contest.

How the two histories developed
Mercedes-Benz: from Benz and DMG to a combined marque
The Mercedes-Benz story begins with Carl Benz, but the later marque also draws on the separate work of Gottlieb Daimler and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG). In 1888, Bertha Benz and her sons made a long-distance journey from Mannheim to Pforzheim and back in an improved vehicle. DMG’s Mercedes 35 hp scored a notable success at Nice race week in March 1901, and DMG registered the Mercedes name in 1902. The name therefore predates the combined Mercedes-Benz brand by more than two decades. Mercedes-Benz Group’s history of the predecessor companies
DMG and Benz & Cie. began preparing to combine through a joint venture in 1924. BMW: aviation roots, motorcycles, then cars
BMW identifies 7 March 1916—the foundation date of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke—as its official founding date. Its roots are in aviation-related manufacturing; the name Bayerische Motorenwerke was adopted by Rapp Motorenwerke in 1917. BMW Group History
BMW’s first vehicle type was not a car. The company unveiled the R 32 motorcycle at the Berlin Motor Show in 1923. BMW points to its transverse boxer engine and shaft drive as enduring characteristics of its motorcycles. It entered automobile production in 1928 by taking over Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach. When did BMW and Mercedes-Benz become rivals?
There is no single founding-day answer. The businesses’ histories overlap before the postwar premium-car rivalry familiar to many drivers: BMW was making motorcycles before it entered car production, while the Mercedes name and the Benz and DMG predecessor companies had already been active for decades. The later Mercedes-Benz marque dates from 1926, after BMW’s official founding but before BMW began building cars.
The rivalry is best understood as an enduring competition between two automotive lineages that developed through different routes—not as proof that two carmakers with today’s names competed from the same date. Their shared automotive story also includes a striking corporate episode: in 1959, Daimler-Benz tried to take over BMW.

What this history can—and cannot—tell you about the cars today
The chronology explains how two major automotive names came to be compared, but it does not establish which company currently offers better value, performance, reliability, sales results or electric-vehicle range. Those comparisons require matched vehicles, a specified model year and market, and current, like-for-like evidence. The historical milestones above are not a substitute for that kind of comparison.
