Tesla’s U.S. Patent 12,589,814 B2 describes a glass roof assembly designed to route HVAC air through tiny holes in its cabin-facing layer. The patent was granted on March 31, 2026, but a grant is not a production announcement: the sources available do not identify a Tesla model, release date, or retrofit using this design.
How the proposed roof would work
The patent, titled Automotive perforated insulated glass structure, describes an exterior glass layer and a perforated inner layer, with cells in the space between them. An HVAC coupling would feed conditioned air into that space, allowing air to pass through the inner layer and into the cabin. The design would make the roof part of the air-distribution system rather than simply a surface above occupants.

Tesla’s patent says the assembly “may provide noise absorption and temperature insulation characteristics.” Those are proposed characteristics, not independently verified results: the patent and coverage cited here do not report vehicle tests or measured performance for this roof.

What the patent does—and doesn’t—establish
The patent was filed on June 26, 2019, and granted in 2026. That establishes a protected patent concept, not that Tesla has committed to building or selling it. The sources reviewed do not identify a production announcement, release timing, intended vehicle, or retrofit kit.
Some reporting gives dimensions for the proposed structure, but the accounts vary in how they describe the gap. Because those figures are not needed to understand the concept and should be checked against the patent’s detailed description, they are not treated here as settled specifications.

Don’t confuse it with a separate Tesla HVAC patent
BGR also discusses a different Tesla HVAC concept that uses suction to remove pockets of heated air. Its reported estimates of a 43% reduction in cabin temperature gradient and 7% lower energy use relate to that separate design—not to the perforated-glass roof. No independent measured performance figure for the roof concept is established in the sources cited here. BGR’s coverage distinguishes the concepts.
What owners can do about sun through the roof now
A properly fitted panoramic-roof sunshade is a present-day accessory category for reducing direct sun exposure. It does not route HVAC air through the roof or provide the patent’s proposed acoustic function. Check the exact vehicle model and year before buying: fitment is vehicle-specific, and the sources reviewed do not verify a particular product listing.

BGR notes that strong sun can make a glass-roof cabin feel hot and that extra air-conditioning use can reduce an EV’s range. That practical concern helps explain the appeal of the patent, but it is not evidence that the patented roof will deliver a particular cabin-temperature or range improvement. Not a Tesla App’s report also describes the proposed perforated-glass design.
