Updated August 9, 2026: Tesla’s robotaxi event already happened. The presentation, officially called “We, Robot,” took place on October 10, 2024, at Warner Bros. Discovery’s studio lot in Burbank, California. It was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Pacific time and introduced Tesla’s two-seat Cybercab, the larger Robovan and demonstrations of the Optimus humanoid robot.

You can watch the official Tesla replay on YouTube. Tesla’s current Robotaxi service is a separate development: it uses Model Y vehicles in limited areas, while the purpose-built Cybercab remains a future platform that Tesla has begun producing and testing but has not confirmed as broadly available for purchase or paid rides.

What Tesla revealed at “We, Robot”

Cybercab: Tesla’s purpose-built robotaxi

The headline reveal was the Cybercab, a compact, two-seat vehicle designed around autonomous transportation rather than conventional human driving. The displayed vehicle featured:

  • Two seats
  • No conventional steering wheel
  • No accelerator or brake pedals
  • Butterfly-style doors
  • A small, futuristic body intended for urban point-to-point trips

The design is important because Tesla was not simply showing a Model 3 or Model Y with a taxi sign. The Cybercab was presented as a purpose-built vehicle that could devote more of its interior and hardware to passengers, rather than accommodating a human driver and conventional controls.

However, the event showed a prototype or concept presentation, not a customer launch. The displayed configuration should not automatically be treated as the final specification for every production or regulatory version. Tesla’s later engineering tests have also been reported as using a vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals, but testing is not the same as retail availability or final approval.

Robovan: a larger autonomous passenger or cargo vehicle

Tesla also unveiled the Robovan, a much larger autonomous vehicle intended for either passengers or cargo. Elon Musk said it could carry up to 20 people. That capacity was a Tesla claim presented at the event, not a complete commercial specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tesla did not provide a firm production date, consumer price or detailed operating plan for the Robovan at “We, Robot.” Its role appeared broader than the two-seat Cybercab: it could potentially serve group transportation, shuttle routes or freight applications. The Car and Driver event report and TechCrunch’s Robovan coverage provide additional event details.

Optimus humanoid robots

The event concluded with demonstrations of Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot. Musk discussed a possible eventual price of approximately $20,000 to $30,000, but he did not establish a firm consumer launch schedule or production plan during the presentation.

It is also important not to treat the demonstrations as proof that Optimus operated autonomously throughout the event. Reports after the presentation said that humans remotely assisted or operated some of the robots’ interactions. That reporting should be distinguished from a confirmed Tesla statement that every part of the demonstration was remotely controlled. TechSpot summarized the reports.

What Tesla promised versus what was confirmed

Much of the attention after “We, Robot” focused on numbers and dates. Those details were generally targets or projections, not finalized product specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Claim or announcement How to understand it
Cybercab would cost less than $30,000 Elon Musk’s projected target, not a confirmed final MSRP. The event did not establish whether the figure included taxes, delivery charges, incentives or optional equipment.
Production would begin in 2026, or before 2027 A Tesla production target, not a guaranteed date for customer deliveries, broad service deployment or regulatory approval.
Unsupervised Full Self-Driving would reach California and Texas in 2025 A forward-looking Tesla statement. It should not be presented as a guaranteed timetable or as proof that the consumer FSD product became autonomous.
Robovan could carry up to 20 people A Tesla/Musk capacity claim. No firm commercial production plan was established at the event.
Owners could eventually add eligible Teslas to the robotaxi network A long-term business vision. Tesla did not establish a public enrollment program, final owner economics, insurance model or eligibility rules.
Autonomous vehicles could eventually be much safer than human-driven vehicles A Tesla safety projection, not safety evidence produced by the studio-lot demonstration. The claim requires independent validation under real operating conditions.

Tesla’s broader pitch was that autonomous vehicles could reduce the cost of transportation and remain productive instead of sitting unused. Tesla described that objective in its Q3 2024 investor materials. The business case, though, depends on more than the vehicle’s ability to move without a driver.

How Tesla’s proposed robotaxi network was supposed to work

Tesla described a future ride-hailing network with several possible sources of vehicles:

  • Tesla could operate some vehicles directly as a managed fleet.
  • Owners might eventually add eligible Tesla vehicles to the network when they were not using them.
  • Passengers would request rides through an app.
  • The vehicles could earn revenue while operating without their owners inside them.

That model would make Tesla part automaker, part transportation operator and potentially part fleet-management company. It also creates practical questions that the event did not fully answer:

  • Who charges vehicles that operate continuously?
  • Who cleans the interior after passengers leave?
  • Who handles maintenance, tire damage and recovery after a breakdown?
  • Who insures the ride and accepts liability after a crash?
  • How does a remote-assistance team respond when a vehicle encounters an unusual situation?
  • What happens if a passenger damages the vehicle, becomes ill or refuses to leave?
  • How does the system deal with road closures, severe weather, police instructions or an inaccessible pickup point?

Tesla showed or referenced ideas involving wireless charging, automated interior cleaning, fleet management and remote assistance. These were best understood as future concepts or demonstrations, not confirmed production specifications with firm deployment dates. WIRED’s analysis highlighted several of the operating and business issues that remained open.

The most important distinction: Cybercab, Robotaxi service and FSD are different things

“Tesla robotaxi” is often used to describe three separate subjects. Keeping them separate prevents the most common misunderstanding in coverage.

  1. The Cybercab: Tesla’s purpose-built, two-seat autonomous vehicle shown at “We, Robot” and later taken into production-intent testing.
  2. Tesla Robotaxi service: A current, limited ride service that Tesla’s official pages say is starting with existing Model Y vehicles.
  3. FSD (Supervised): Tesla’s consumer driver-assistance system, which requires an attentive human driver.

Tesla’s official FSD page says FSD (Supervised) requires active supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous. The distinction is also consistent with NHTSA’s automated-vehicle guidance, which says consumer vehicles currently available for purchase in the United States are not fully automated and require the driver’s full attention.

A customer using FSD (Supervised) remains responsible for monitoring the road and taking over. A robotaxi passenger is not supposed to be the driver. A future Cybercab is intended to be built without the normal controls a human driver would use. Those are different technical, legal and operational categories even if Tesla uses related software and artificial-intelligence systems.

What happened after the 2024 reveal?

Tesla now operates a limited Robotaxi service

Tesla’s current Robotaxi page and support page list limited service in areas of:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Miami, Florida
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Tampa, Florida
  • Austin, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Houston, Texas

Tesla says the service is starting with Model Y vehicles and describes Cybercab as a vehicle that will offer rides in the future. This is why a ride listed as a Tesla Robotaxi today should not automatically be described as a Cybercab ride.

For a rider in an eligible area, Tesla’s support instructions say to open the Robotaxi app, enter a destination within the displayed service area, review the estimated fare and wait time, confirm the ride, match the arriving vehicle’s license plate to the app, enter, buckle up and tap “Start Ride.” The vehicle waits seven minutes at the pickup location before the ride may be canceled.

Cybercab production and road testing have begun, but launch language is premature

Tesla announced that the first production Cybercab had come off the line at Gigafactory Texas in February 2026. In June 2026, Tesla began engineering tests of a production-intent Cybercab on public roads in Austin.

Reporting on those tests showed a safety monitor in the front passenger seat, and the vehicle was not being used as an ordinary paid customer ride. The reports from Electrek and TechCrunch support a careful description: Tesla has begun building and testing production-intent Cybercab vehicles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not establish that Tesla has launched the Cybercab, opened consumer ordering, begun ordinary paid Cybercab rides or obtained nationwide authorization.

Tesla’s Robotaxi performance claims remain company claims

On Tesla’s Q2 2026 earnings call, Vice President of AI Ashok Elluswamy said Tesla had driven more than 380,000 unsupervised Robotaxi miles across six cities in two states and had recorded “zero notable incidents.” Those are Tesla’s own reported figures, not an independently verified safety study. The call also said Tesla was scaling cautiously and that Cybercab would require vehicle-specific driving data before Tesla could put large numbers of the vehicles into service. The call transcript is available through the Q2 2026 earnings-call record.

What the event actually demonstrated about autonomy

The Cybercab reveal showed Tesla’s intended vehicle and business direction. It did not prove that Tesla had solved autonomous driving in every environment.

The presentation occurred on a controlled studio lot rather than an ordinary public-road route. A useful evaluation separates four kinds of evidence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vehicle evidence

  • Was a physical vehicle shown?
  • Was it moving under its own control?
  • Was the route a closed or controlled environment?
  • Were safety monitors, remote operators or other intervention methods present?
  • Was the vehicle production-intent or a concept?

Autonomy evidence

  • Was the route geofenced or otherwise constrained?
  • Did the vehicle encounter ordinary traffic, unusual road users and emergency scenarios?
  • Could a human intervene?
  • Did Tesla provide safety data, disengagement data or independent validation?

Business evidence

  • Was there a final price or ordering process?
  • Was a production facility operating at meaningful volume?
  • Was there a defined service area and customer-support system?
  • Were charging, cleaning, maintenance, insurance and liability explained?

Regulatory evidence

  • Did Tesla identify the necessary federal exemptions?
  • What state and local permits would be required?
  • Who would be responsible during a crash or system failure?
  • Was there a customer-delivery timetable rather than only a production target?

The 2024 event supplied more visual evidence about Tesla’s design direction than about large-scale commercial reliability. A staged demonstration can show that a vehicle completed a particular route; it cannot by itself establish safe operation across weather, traffic, road layouts, emergency conditions and passenger behavior.

Purpose-built Cybercab versus Model Y-based service

Purpose-built Cybercab Existing Model Y Robotaxi service
Designed specifically for autonomous fleet use Uses an existing Tesla vehicle platform
Displayed without a steering wheel, accelerator or brake pedals Retains conventional vehicle controls and hardware
Could devote more space and hardware to passenger use Can potentially be deployed before a new vehicle is fully approved and produced
May reduce operating costs at scale Provides a nearer-term service platform but is not the final Cybercab
Requires its own production, regulatory and support path Still requires service-area, safety, liability, cleaning and remote-assistance systems

The purpose-built design offers potential advantages: no driver-oriented controls, more efficient passenger packaging and possibly lower fleet operating costs. Its disadvantages are equally important. It has no human takeover path if the autonomy system fails, may require exemptions from conventional vehicle rules, and is less flexible as a privately owned car.

Tesla’s camera-and-neural-network approach is also strategically different from autonomous-vehicle programs that combine cameras with radar, lidar, high-definition maps or other sensors. That is a design and development trade-off, not automatic proof that one approach is superior. A closed-lot demonstration did not establish that cameras alone are sufficient for every road, weather or emergency condition.

Regulatory status: more flexibility, but not automatic approval

The federal regulatory environment changed after the 2024 event, but those changes should not be mistaken for approval of Tesla’s specific vehicle.

In June 2025, NHTSA said it had streamlined the Part 555 exemption process for automated vehicles that lack traditional steering wheels, driver-operated brakes or rearview mirrors. The framework allows manufacturers to sell up to 2,500 noncompliant vehicles per year, subject to safety and public-interest requirements. This creates a possible regulatory route for limited deployments; it is not a blanket authorization for every steering-wheel-free vehicle.

In June 2026, NHTSA began rulemaking that would remove the requirement for manual brake pedals in vehicles designed never to be operated by a human, while retaining braking-performance requirements. Because this is rulemaking, it should not be described as a final rule or as a Cybercab approval.

NHTSA’s Part 555 announcement, brake-pedal rulemaking announcement and automated-vehicle safety guidance are the relevant federal references. NHTSA has also issued a demonstration exemption to Zoox, illustrating that exemptions are handled through specific regulatory actions rather than a general industry-wide approval; see the agency’s Zoox exemption announcement.

As of August 9, 2026, no source reviewed for this update establishes broad federal approval for Tesla’s Cybercab or nationwide deployment authority. Federal rules are only part of the picture: state and local operating permissions, insurance, safety oversight and commercial transportation requirements may also apply.

What Tesla still has not established

Even after the production announcement and Austin testing, the following details remain unresolved or should not be presented as final:

  • A confirmed final Cybercab MSRP
  • A public consumer ordering process
  • A confirmed date for ordinary paid Cybercab rides
  • Production volume and delivery timing
  • Broad geographic availability
  • A complete independently validated safety case
  • Final owner-network enrollment terms and revenue sharing
  • Detailed insurance and liability arrangements
  • Final charging, cleaning, maintenance and vehicle-recovery procedures
  • A firm Robovan production or deployment timeline
  • Proof that Optimus operated autonomously throughout the event

There is also no basis for saying that “We, Robot” proved Tesla had solved autonomous driving. The event established Tesla’s concept and ambitions. The subsequent limited Robotaxi service and Cybercab testing provide additional evidence of development, but they do not turn every 2024 projection into a confirmed product fact.

Bottom line for anyone searching for the Tesla robotaxi event

If you want to watch the presentation, use the official Tesla replay. The relevant event was “We, Robot,” held October 10, 2024, at Warner Bros. Discovery’s Burbank studio and scheduled for 7 p.m. Pacific time.

The event revealed the Cybercab, Robovan and Optimus, but it did not launch a finished, widely available autonomous taxi. By August 2026, Tesla had a limited Model Y-based Robotaxi service and had begun building and testing production-intent Cybercab vehicles. The remaining questions—price, approval, production scale, safety, liability and customer availability—are the difference between a compelling prototype and a mature transportation service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Tesla robotaxi event still happening?

No. Tesla’s “We, Robot” robotaxi event took place on October 10, 2024. There is no live event to join now; watch the official replay on Tesla’s YouTube channel.

What time did Tesla’s robotaxi event start?

The scheduled start was 7 p.m. Pacific, 8 p.m. Mountain, 9 p.m. Central and 10 p.m. Eastern on October 10, 2024. In UTC, that was 2 a.m. on October 11.

Can I buy the Tesla Cybercab now?

There is no confirmed consumer ordering path or final retail price in the available Tesla information. Production-intent vehicles have been built and tested, but that does not establish retail availability.

Can I take a Cybercab ride now?

Tesla’s current Robotaxi service uses Model Y vehicles in limited areas of Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Austin, Dallas and Houston. Tesla describes the Cybercab as a future vehicle, so do not assume that a current Robotaxi ride uses a Cybercab.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Tesla FSD fully autonomous?

No. Tesla calls its consumer system FSD (Supervised) and says the driver must actively supervise it. That is different from unsupervised robotaxi operation, where the passenger is not responsible for driving.

Was the Cybercab demonstrated on public roads at the 2024 event?

No. “We, Robot” was held on a Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank, a controlled setting rather than an ordinary public-road demonstration. Tesla began reported public-road engineering tests of a production-intent Cybercab in Austin in June 2026.

Was Optimus fully autonomous during the event?

The public evidence does not establish that every Optimus interaction was autonomous. Post-event reports said humans remotely assisted or operated some demonstrations, so the performances should not be treated as proof of fully autonomous operation.

The Bottom Line

The Tesla robotaxi event is best understood as a 2024 product vision, not a finished service launch. Watch the replay for the Cybercab, Robovan and Optimus reveals, but separate Tesla’s projections from confirmed facts. As of August 2026, Robotaxi rides are available only in limited areas using Model Y vehicles, while Cybercab production and testing have begun without a confirmed broad consumer launch.
