Tesla’s December 2024 U.S. recall covered 694,304 vehicles, according to Reuters—not more than 700,000. The issue was a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning light that might not stay illuminated between drive cycles, potentially leaving drivers unaware of low tire pressure. Tesla’s reported remedy was a free over-the-air software update. The recall raises a legitimate safety and quality question, but its size alone cannot show whether Tesla vehicles are less reliable than comparable cars from other manufacturers.
What the nearly 700,000-vehicle recall involved
Reuters reported Tesla’s December 20, 2024, U.S. recall count as 694,304 vehicles. The defect involved the TPMS warning-light behavior: the light might not remain illuminated between drive cycles and therefore might not alert a driver to low tire pressure. The reported fix was an over-the-air software update. Reuters’ recall report and Associated Press coverage describe the issue and remedy.
AP identified certain 2024 Cybertrucks, 2017–2025 Model 3s, and 2020–2025 Model Ys among the affected groups. “Certain” matters: model-year coverage does not mean every vehicle from those years is included. Owners should check their own vehicle’s recall status rather than assume inclusion or exclusion based on model and year.
This was a defect in the warning indication, not a reported defect in the tires themselves. A pressure gauge can help check actual tire pressure, but it does not repair the warning-light behavior or replace the recall remedy.

How the other cited Tesla events differ
Several separate safety events help explain why Tesla’s quality processes have faced scrutiny. They should not be collapsed into a single recall count: the defects, affected populations, remedies, and regulatory statuses differ.
| Event | What was reported | Status and remedy |
|---|---|---|
| December 2024 TPMS recall | Reuters reported 694,304 U.S. vehicles; AP described certain 2024 Cybertrucks, 2017–2025 Model 3s, and 2020–2025 Model Ys. | Recall; free over-the-air software update reported as the remedy. |
| July 2024 hood-latch recall | Reuters reported more than 1.8 million U.S. vehicles. Software might fail to detect an unlatched hood, which could open and obstruct the driver’s view. | Recall; an updated software alert was reported as the fix. Reuters’ hood-latch report. |
| February 2024 power-steering investigation | Reuters reported an investigation population of about 334,000 2023 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles over power-steering loss. | NHTSA had upgraded the probe to an engineering analysis. That is an investigation step, not itself a recall; the report described it as preceding any agency demand for a recall. Reuters’ report on the investigation. |
These figures are not interchangeable. A recall population is not the number of distinct defects, and an investigation population is not a recall count. Likewise, a software remedy does not mean an event was merely a software update rather than a safety recall.

What NHTSA’s OTA figures do—and do not—show
NHTSA’s 2025 annual report, published in 2026, lists Tesla vehicle counts for recalls partially or fully remedied through over-the-air updates: 3,738,144 for recall year 2021; 2,569,151 for 2022; 5,098,363 for 2023; 11,728 for 2024; and 679,242 for 2025. These are counts associated with recall years, not a unique-vehicle reliability score. A vehicle may be represented across campaigns or years, and the figures do not indicate that every counted vehicle received an update or had the same defect severity. The report explains its scope in the NHTSA annual recall report materials.
Recall totals can be useful for understanding the scale of campaigns and the types of remedies used. They cannot, by themselves, measure the rate of breakdowns, repair costs, owner satisfaction, or how Tesla compares with other manufacturers. Those questions require a like-for-like dataset with a defined geography, model-year cohort, observation period, and reliability outcome.

Does this mean Tesla reliability is at risk?
The evidence here supports a focused conclusion: Tesla has had substantial U.S. safety recalls involving software-related detection or warning functions, and a separate steering issue was under investigation. Those events warrant attention to recall compliance and safety oversight. They do not establish a comparative reliability verdict for Tesla vehicles as a whole.
To make a fair manufacturer comparison, use the same kind of evidence for each brand—for example, repair frequency or component-failure rates for comparable model years over the same ownership period. Recall volume alone is a poor substitute because one campaign can cover many vehicles, remedies can differ, and investigations may never become recalls. The cited material does not provide a matched Tesla-versus-competitor reliability dataset, so it cannot settle whether Tesla is less reliable overall.

What Tesla owners should do
- Check the vehicle identification number (VIN) through Tesla’s recall resources or the applicable U.S. recall lookup, and confirm whether the vehicle is included in the specific campaign. Model-year ranges alone are not confirmation.
- If the TPMS recall applies, follow Tesla’s instructions for the free over-the-air update and confirm the update has completed. The reported remedy is the software update, not a tire gauge.
- Check tire pressure with a suitable gauge if you are concerned about a tire or warning indication, and respond promptly to any low-pressure warning. Measuring pressure can help assess the tire; it does not resolve a recalled warning-light defect.
- For any safety concern that persists after the remedy, contact Tesla or a qualified service professional rather than relying on the warning system alone.
