The right Tesla Model 3 depends on whether you value the lowest listed price, maximum EPA-estimated range, all-wheel drive or quicker acceleration. Tesla’s US lineup spans Standard, Premium and Performance configurations, with EPA-estimated range from 309 to 363 miles. Those figures are comparison estimates—not a promise of real-world range—and your total cost will depend on local pricing, electricity, insurance, taxes, tires and other buyer-specific expenses.
Which Model 3 trim should you buy?
Tesla’s US Model 3 page lists four configurations. Prices below are page snapshots, not guaranteed quotes; confirm the exact configuration and local order price before buying.
| Configuration | Drive | EPA-estimated range | Listed starting price | Maximum Supercharging power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Rear-wheel drive | 321 miles | $38,630, including destination and order fees; taxes and other fees excluded | 225 kW |
| Premium | Rear-wheel drive | 363 miles | $44,130; taxes and other fees excluded | 250 kW |
| Premium | Dual-motor all-wheel drive | 346 miles | Not stated on the checked Tesla page | 250 kW |
| Performance | Dual-motor all-wheel drive | 309 miles | $56,630, including destination and order fees; taxes and other fees excluded | 250 kW |
Specifications and prices are from Tesla’s US Model 3 page; listed prices are subject to change. Check your location’s quote for options, destination and order fees, taxes, registration and delivery. Tesla’s configurator also shows financing or lease examples that depend on terms and assumptions; a monthly payment is not the vehicle’s total price. Its gas-savings estimate is based on an assumed comparison vehicle, is not guaranteed, and identifies April 23, 2026 as the date for the gasoline and electricity prices used.
Choose Standard for a lower listed entry price
Standard is the rear-wheel-drive option with the lowest listed starting price in this snapshot. It may suit buyers whose priority is minimizing the initial vehicle price and who can meet their range needs without paying for a longer-range or all-wheel-drive configuration.

Choose Premium rear-wheel drive for the longest listed range
Premium rear-wheel drive has the highest EPA-estimated range in this lineup at 363 miles. It is the strongest fit if maximizing the published range figure is important and rear-wheel drive meets your needs.
Choose Premium all-wheel drive if you want dual motors
Premium all-wheel drive pairs dual motors with a 346-mile EPA estimate. Compare its local quote and equipment with the rear-wheel-drive Premium rather than assuming the two versions have the same price or features.
Choose Performance for the performance-focused configuration
Performance is dual-motor all-wheel drive and has the highest listed starting price and the lowest EPA-estimated range among the four configurations. Consider the acceleration and equipment differences against the extra purchase cost and your practical range needs; the longest-range trim is not automatically the best match for every buyer.

How far can a Model 3 go on a charge?
Tesla’s EPA-estimated figures are 321 miles for Standard, 363 miles for Premium rear-wheel drive, 346 miles for Premium all-wheel drive and 309 miles for Performance. Treat them as standardized comparison figures, not guaranteed distances for a particular trip. Tesla notes that actual range can vary with speed, weather, elevation change, battery temperature, state of charge and configuration, among other factors.

For trip planning, leave a buffer rather than assuming the full EPA estimate is usable in every situation. Cold weather, sustained high speeds and hills can affect range. Your route, charging stops and conditions matter more than the headline number alone.
How long does Model 3 charging take?
Tesla lists peak Supercharging power of 225 kW for Standard and 250 kW for Premium and Performance. Its “miles added in 15 minutes” figures are manufacturer estimates based on constant-speed data and may vary. Peak power is not sustained throughout a charging session: charging power tapers, and actual time depends on conditions including the charger, battery temperature and state of charge. The published figures do not establish a universal 10–80% charging time.

Home charging
Level 2 equipment is a home charging option. Before choosing a Level 2 home charging station, check electrical capacity, hardware compatibility, installation work, local permitting and code requirements, and your utility’s rates. The US Department of Energy says an electrician can advise whether a home has adequate electrical capacity for vehicle charging. Time-of-use electricity rates may also affect when charging is least expensive. The DOE’s electricity infrastructure guidance outlines home charging considerations.
Supercharging and other public charging
Public charging can be useful when you cannot charge at home or are travelling, but the reviewed sources do not establish a universal current Supercharger price. Network prices and fees can vary, so use the price shown for the location and session rather than assuming a fixed per-mile or per-charge cost.

Charging cost depends on how much electricity the car uses, your local electricity price and the share of charging done at home versus on public networks. For a Model 3 estimate, use the chosen configuration’s energy consumption, your utility rate, expected charging losses, miles driven and charging mix. The sources here do not support a single universal Model 3 cost per charge or per mile.

The DOE offers a general illustration, not a Model 3 quote: at 10.7 cents per kilowatt-hour, a fully depleted 54-kWh battery in an EV with a 200-mile range would cost about $6 to charge fully. That example assumes those stated battery, range and electricity-price figures; do not apply it directly to a Model 3. See the DOE’s charging-cost guidance.

There is no substantiated single total ownership-cost figure for every Model 3 buyer. Build a comparison using your local order quote and personal cost inputs, and keep estimates separate from firm quotes.
- Purchase and financing: Use the actual configuration quote and financing terms. Include down payment, interest, fees and any lease mileage limits when comparing offers.
- Energy: Estimate electricity from your driving, the vehicle’s consumption, local rates and home/public charging mix.
- Insurance, registration and taxes: Obtain location-specific figures; they are not established by the listed vehicle prices.
- Maintenance, repairs and tires: Budget for tires and service rather than treating an EV as maintenance-free.
- Depreciation and resale: These depend on time, mileage, condition and market and are not resolved by the sources cited here.
Tesla’s configurator gas-savings estimate is a manufacturer calculation using an assumed comparison vehicle and stated assumptions, not a guarantee or an independent total-cost analysis.

Maintenance, tires and warranty
The DOE says all-electric vehicles typically need less maintenance than conventional vehicles because batteries, motors and associated electronics need little regular maintenance, there are fewer fluids and moving parts, and regenerative braking reduces brake wear. That general guidance does not mean a Model 3 has no service costs. The DOE recommends consulting the dealer or owner’s manual for battery-specific information; see its electric-vehicle maintenance guidance.
Tires remain a routine ownership item. Tesla’s 2024-and-later Model 3 manual says to keep wheels aligned to specification, maintain recommended tire inflation pressure and rotate tires when needed. Check the manual for the car’s model year and market for the applicable instructions: Model 3 Owner’s Manual.
On the checked US product page, Tesla lists basic vehicle coverage of 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, for the configurations shown. Battery and drive unit coverage is listed as 8 years or 100,000 miles for Standard, and 8 years or 120,000 miles for Premium and Performance. Confirm the current warranty terms for your specific configuration and market; coverage limits do not predict repair costs outside the warranty.
Is a home-charger tax credit available?
As of October 3, 2026, the IRS describes a personal-use credit for qualifying charging property placed in service at a main home from January 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026: 30% of cost, up to $1,000 per item, subject to location and other requirements. That stated placement-in-service window has ended, so do not count on this credit for a new installation in October 2026. Check current tax rules, state programs and utility rebates before making an installation budget. See the IRS charging-property credit guidance.
