Clean the Tucson’s exterior plastic trim gently: rinse away grit, wash with water and a soft cloth or microfiber, then dry with a clean microfiber towel. Hyundai warns against chemical solvents and strong detergents on plastic parts. A trim dressing or restorer is optional; use one only when its label fits the specific panel and finish.
What Hyundai recommends for exterior plastic
Hyundai’s 2025 Tucson owner’s manual recommends washing with a soft cloth—microfiber is given as an example—or a sponge, and drying with a microfiber towel. Rinse loose grit away first rather than rubbing dust across the surface; Hyundai cautions elsewhere in its finish-care guidance that dry wiping dirt or dust can scratch a finish.
The manual’s warning is direct: “To prevent damage to the plastic parts, do not clean with chemical solvents or strong detergents.” It also says, “It is very important to follow the label directions when using any chemical cleaner or polish.” The exterior plastic parts fitted to a Tucson may vary, so “geometric trim” is a useful visual description, not a Hyundai material specification. The manual cited here is for the 2025 Tucson; check the owner’s manual for your model year, trim and market.
A gentle cleaning sequence
- Choose a cool, shaded place. This is a conservative detailing practice, not a separate instruction quoted from Hyundai. It also helps avoid working on hot panels.
- Rinse off loose dirt and grit. Do not dry-wipe dusty trim.
- Wash gently. Use water and a soft cloth, microfiber towel or sponge. Avoid chemical solvents and strong detergents on plastic.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean microfiber towel. Do not leave cleaner to dry on the surface unless its directions specifically call for that.
- Decide whether protection is needed. Routine washing does not require a restorer. If you choose a dressing or restorer, confirm the panel is unpainted and that the product label explicitly covers its material and finish. Apply sparingly to an applicator and work a small section at a time, following the label for removal of excess.
Do not assume an unverified product is safe for painted, matte, coated or textured surfaces. Hyundai’s cited manual does not provide a panel-by-panel chemical compatibility list.

Protect trim from reflected sunlight
Hyundai warns that sunlight reflected from a glass facade or stainless-steel sign can damage some exterior plastic parts, including bumpers, spoilers, garnish, lamps and outside mirrors. Avoid parking where intense reflected light falls on the vehicle; Hyundai suggests using a car cover when avoiding the exposure is not possible.

Start by washing gently and rinsing thoroughly rather than escalating immediately to a solvent or strong detergent. If a mark persists, do not assume it is residue or apply a trim product to conceal it without checking the panel and product compatibility. Hyundai’s cited manual does not identify a specific cleaner for isolated spots or establish that dark marks are a Tucson-wide defect.
