For a used Mazda that can handle the widest range of everyday needs, start with the CX-5. The Mazda3 and Mazda6 are strong sedan options, while the CX-3, CX-30, CX-9, MX-5 Miata, Mazda2, and Mazda5 each suit more specific needs. This is a needs-based shortlist, not a verified ranking of ten equally strong buys: the evidence is most specific for the CX-5, Mazda3, and Mazda6, and any individual car’s year, maintenance, crash history, condition, and local price can change the decision.

Consumer Reports placed Mazda third in its 2026 used-car reliability brand ranking, but that is population-level context—not a guarantee for every model year or vehicle. Its reliability history draws on a 2026 subscriber survey covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots across vehicles from 2000–2025. Consumer Reports’ Mazda overview explains the brand context; check the exact vehicle’s records and year-specific ratings before buying.

How to use this used Mazda shortlist

The ten entries below are distinct Mazda nameplates, not ten model-year combinations and not an ordinal reliability ranking. The clearest year guidance comes from Consumer Reports and an Edmunds recommendation republished by the Associated Press. Edmunds’ recommendations covered young-driver choices under $20,000 in 2024; that was a historical shopping context, not a current price guarantee.

For safety, verify the exact model year and body style rather than carrying a newer model’s award backward. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluates crashworthiness and crash avoidance or mitigation; its ratings search is organized around specific vehicles and years.

10 used Mazda models to consider

1. Mazda CX-5: the broadest-use compact SUV pick

The CX-5 is the most broadly supported choice in this list: it combines compact-SUV utility with year-specific safety guidance. Consumer Reports recommends considering 2014 or newer if your budget allows, because those vehicles did better in the IIHS small-overlap crash test. The model had a refresh for 2016 and a redesign for 2017; those are useful generation markers, not automatic buy-or-avoid rules. Edmunds also recommended 2014–2021 CX-5s for young drivers in its 2024 under-$20,000 context.

Compare the exact year’s safety results and condition, especially across the 2017 redesign. Consumer Reports’ CX-5 coverage provides the cited generation context.

Rank #2
Tamiya Mazda RX-7 R1-1/24 Scale Model Kit 24116
  • Plastic model kit-assembly required
  • Glue and paint sold separately
  • Manufacturer item #: 24116

2. Mazda3 sedan: a compact daily driver

The Mazda3 sedan is a sensible alternative if you want a compact car rather than an SUV. Edmunds’ young-driver recommendations covered 2014–2022 Mazda3s and reported that every Mazda3 in that interval received an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating. Consumer Reports identifies redesigns for 2014 and 2019, so compare ratings and equipment by exact year rather than assuming all examples are identical. See Consumer Reports’ Mazda3 coverage.

3. Mazda3 hatchback: compact size with a different cargo shape

The hatchback shares the Mazda3 nameplate and the model-year context above, but its body style provides a different cargo layout from the sedan. Choose between them based on the shape and access you need for everyday loads; do not count them as separate Mazda models when comparing nameplates.

  • Number 14/125 in the Overall Series!

4. Mazda6: a larger, discontinued sedan

The Mazda6 suits shoppers who want a midsize sedan rather than a compact Mazda3. Edmunds recommended 2014–2021 examples in its 2024 young-driver list. The Mazda6 is discontinued, so shop the used market and assess the individual car’s service and crash history; the recommendation does not establish that every year or example is trouble-free. Consumer Reports’ brand overview lists it among Mazda’s discontinued models.

5. Mazda CX-3: a smaller crossover for buyers who value compact dimensions

Consumer Reports describes the CX-3 generation as 2016–2021, with front- or all-wheel drive. Its smaller footprint may fit buyers who want a crossover but do not need CX-5-sized space. The trade-off is a firmer, noisier ride, so test-drive the exact vehicle and decide whether its size works for passengers and cargo. See Consumer Reports’ CX-3 coverage.

6. Mazda CX-30: a newer small crossover between CX-3 and CX-5

Introduced for 2020 and based on the Mazda3, the CX-30 sits between the CX-3 and CX-5 in Mazda’s crossover range. It may suit someone who wants a newer small crossover but does not need the CX-5’s larger footprint. Consumer Reports notes equipment and powertrain updates for 2021; compare the exact year and configuration rather than treating those changes as a blanket reliability recommendation. See Consumer Reports’ CX-30 coverage.

7. Mazda CX-9: a discontinued three-row option

The CX-9 is Mazda’s discontinued three-row SUV in this shortlist. It is worth considering only if you specifically need three rows and find an example whose condition, records, and price make sense. The sources here do not establish a best-year range or a model-specific reliability verdict, so check the precise year’s safety results and recalls and have the vehicle inspected before choosing one.

  • This premium die - cast model is a must have for any Fast & Furious collection.

8. Mazda MX-5 Miata: a two-seat roadster for driving enjoyment

The Miata prioritizes an open-top, two-seat driving experience over passenger and cargo capacity. Consumer Reports discusses the 2006–2015 generation; a power-retractable hardtop was available from 2007. That generation detail helps narrow a search, but it is not a best-year or reliability endorsement. See Consumer Reports’ MX-5 Miata coverage.

9. Mazda2: a small-car possibility with market and year caveats

The Mazda2 is a discontinued Mazda line, but the sources here do not establish its U.S. availability, model-year range, or best-year recommendation. Confirm that a specific car was sold in your market and verify its year, safety information, parts and service support, and history before treating it as a practical local option.

10. Mazda5: a niche compact minivan-style alternative

The discontinued Mazda5 offers a minivan-style format for shoppers drawn to that kind of space and practicality. The available evidence establishes the model’s existence, not a model-specific reliability judgment or recommended year. Research the exact year and inspect the specific vehicle rather than assuming the nameplate alone makes an example a good buy.

How to choose the right model year and individual car

A brand reliability ranking can help set expectations, but it cannot tell you whether a particular used car was maintained well, repaired correctly, or damaged in a crash. Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability history draws on a broad subscriber survey; it is not an inspection of the car you are about to buy. Use vehicle-specific checks to close that gap.

  1. Set practical requirements first. Decide how many passengers you regularly carry, how much cargo space you need, whether you need all-wheel drive, and whether a two-seat car or discontinued model fits your use and local market.
  2. Compare local asking prices and total ownership needs. Prices vary by location, year, trim, mileage, and condition; the sources cited here do not provide a current national price comparison. Consider insurance, likely repairs, tires, and fuel economy alongside the purchase price.
  3. Check the exact vehicle’s record and condition. Review maintenance documentation and crash history, then arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. A basic OBD-II code reader can reveal some stored diagnostic codes, but it cannot certify a vehicle’s condition or replace a professional inspection.
  4. Look up safety ratings for the precise year and body style. Use the IIHS ratings search rather than assuming an award or test result for one year applies to another.
  5. Check for open recalls using the VIN. Confirm that any recall work has been completed before purchase.
  6. Test-drive the actual car. Listen and feel for signs of problems, check that equipment works, and decide whether the ride, visibility, and space meet your needs.

When the shortlist is not enough

The CX-5, Mazda3, and Mazda6 have the most concrete used-year context here. For the CX-3, CX-30, and Miata, the cited material helps identify generations and use cases but does not establish a universal best year. For the CX-9, Mazda2, and Mazda5, it does not establish a model-specific reliability verdict or best-year range. In those cases, make the purchase decision from exact-year safety and recall information, local availability, the individual vehicle’s records, and an independent inspection—not from the Mazda badge alone.
