Tesla Led U.S. Fast-Charger Growth in Q2 2026—While Supercharger Prices Rose at Some Sites

Tesla added more U.S. public DC fast-charging ports than any other operator in the second quarter of 2026, but its pricing did not rise everywhere. Paren counted 1,185 Tesla ports among 4,382 new U.S. ports opened in Q2, a 27.0% share. Meanwhile, an August 2026 price tracker found increases at 426 Tesla sites and decreases at 511, with the average standard rate falling slightly.

Did Tesla add the most fast chargers?

Yes—during Q2 2026, the quarter ending June 30. Paren’s analysis of publicly accessible U.S. DC fast-charging infrastructure recorded 4,382 new ports across 806 stations. Tesla added 1,185 ports, more than any other operator and 27.0% of the quarterly total. Walmart added 368, ChargePoint 333 and Red E 315. The figures measure ports opened during that quarter, not the total size of each network. Paren’s Q2 2026 report monitors more than 99% of U.S. DC fast-charging infrastructure.

Operator Q2 2026 ports added Share of 4,382 additions
Tesla 1,185 27.0%
Walmart 368 8.4%
ChargePoint 333 7.6%
Red E 315 7.2%

Tesla’s quarterly lead should not be mistaken for owning most newly built capacity. Many operators contributed the remaining 73%, and smaller networks can post faster percentage growth from a smaller starting base. Tesla already represents approximately half of the all-time active U.S. fast-charging port base, according to Paren, so its 27% share of Q2 additions was below its installed-base share.

How fast is the U.S. fast-charging network growing?

Q2’s total was a rebound from the seasonal low of 3,521 ports added in Q1 2026, but it was below the same quarter a year earlier. The U.S. added 4,865 ports in Q2 2025, versus 4,382 in Q2 2026—a decline of about 10%. One quarter cannot establish a lasting slowdown, especially when the data also show a sequential recovery.

  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

Tesla sites are getting less dense

Tesla’s average new or expanded site had 12.1 ports in Q2 2026, compared with 4.4 ports for non-Tesla networks. Tesla’s average was down from 15.0 in Q2 2025, while the non-Tesla average rose from 3.6. Paren attributes Tesla’s change to an expansion mix that has favored opening additional locations rather than enlarging existing sites as aggressively.

Tesla’s global company figure is different

Tesla’s Q2 2026 shareholder update says it added “over 2,400 net new Supercharging stalls” and grew the network 17% year over year. That is a companywide network figure, not a U.S.-only deployment count, so it cannot be substituted for Paren’s U.S. total. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center lists 43,309 Tesla Supercharger ports across Canada and the United States at the time of access; the combined geography and differing data-feed schedules mean it is not a same-day U.S.-only comparison. Tesla’s Q2 2026 update and the DOE network table explain those scopes.

Why are Supercharger prices going up?

Tesla uses site-specific pricing rather than one nationwide tariff. Its pricing algorithm can consider real-time occupancy and forecast demand to spread usage, improve utilization and manage congestion. Tesla’s explanation is direct: “To help prevent overcrowding at Supercharger sites, prices are higher when sites are busy.” Prices can therefore rise at a crowded location even while another station becomes cheaper. See Tesla’s live-pricing explanation.

Rates can change before you plug in

The live price may increase or decrease until a charging session starts. Once the session begins, the rate is locked for that session. Not every location uses live pricing; some have on-peak and off-peak rates instead. Tesla’s app and vehicle navigation display the applicable site price, so check them immediately before charging rather than relying on an old screenshot or a national average. Tesla’s Supercharging guidance describes the process.

What did prices actually do in August 2026?

Independent tracker DCFC Tracker found mixed movement at Tesla sites open to non-Tesla vehicles. Its August snapshot recorded standard-rate increases at 426 sites and decreases at 511. The unweighted average standard rate was $0.601 per kWh, down 0.56% from July. That means “Tesla raised its prices” is accurate for many individual stations, but not as a blanket nationwide increase.

The tracker excludes free sites, uses the peak price at time-of-use locations and reports observed public prices rather than the amount every driver pays. It is not a Tesla-published tariff. Read the August 2026 snapshot for its methodology and site-level data.

Can non-Tesla cars use Superchargers?

At participating locations, drivers of other EVs can start a session through the Tesla app or, where supported, their vehicle’s navigation system. Pay-per-use access is available; membership is optional and can provide Tesla-vehicle pricing at selected sites. Availability, connector compatibility and rates vary by station, so confirm the specific location in the app before departure. Tesla’s access rules are listed in Supercharging Other EVs.

What the numbers mean for drivers

  • More locations, not just bigger locations: Tesla’s lower average ports per new site suggests geographic expansion is contributing to its quarterly lead.
  • Check the price at the moment of travel: occupancy-based pricing can change before a session starts, then locks when charging begins.
  • Compare the whole charging option: port count, station availability, reliability, connector compatibility, pricing model and location all matter more than one quarter’s additions.
  • Competition is still expanding: EVgo announced a plan to deploy V4 chargers in its metropolitan network; that announcement describes planned deployment and timing, not completed ports. Details are in its August 5, 2026 release.

The Bottom Line

Tesla led U.S. fast-charger additions in Q2 2026 with 1,185 ports, but its 27% share was not a majority of new capacity. Supercharger prices are dynamic: some stations became more expensive, others cheaper, and the tracked August average declined to $0.601/kWh. Treat the quarterly growth lead and station-level price increases as separate facts, and verify the live rate before starting a session.
