Tesla FSD in Australia and New Zealand: launch pricing, free trial and current subscription rules

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) launch in Australia and New Zealand began with upfront pricing, but access is now generally subscription-only. Here are the current costs, trial rules and hardware limitations.

Tesla activated Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in Australia and New Zealand in September 2025. The launch price was reported at A$10,100 in Australia and NZ$11,400 in New Zealand, with monthly subscriptions of A$149 and NZ$159. The pricing model later changed: new access is now generally subscription-only, while eligible new Tesla buyers may receive a trial that starts automatically at delivery.

This is not autonomous driving. Tesla’s system remains supervised driver assistance, and the driver must stay attentive and ready to take control.

What actually changed?

The phrase “Tesla raises FSD price” can describe several different events, so they should not be conflated:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Tesla launched Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in Australia and New Zealand in September 2025.
  2. The initial offering included an expensive outright purchase option alongside monthly subscriptions.
  3. Tesla subsequently moved the markets toward a subscription-only model, removing the normal upfront purchase route for new customers.
  4. Eligible new Tesla buyers may receive a trial, but it is not a blanket offer for every buyer or every trim.

New Zealand transport authority records show Tesla notified officials in August 2025 that the functionality was about to be released in both countries. Contemporary reporting recorded the September activation and original pricing: CarExpert’s launch-price report and NZTA documentation.

Launch and current pricing

Market Reported launch price Current subscription
Australia A$10,100 upfront or A$149 per month A$149 per month from Basic Autopilot; A$75 per month for eligible Enhanced Autopilot vehicles
New Zealand NZ$11,400 upfront or NZ$159 per month NZ$159 per month; Enhanced Autopilot vehicles may receive a different price

Current pricing checked August 18, 2026. Tesla says prices and availability can change. Its Australian support page lists A$149 per month for vehicles with Basic Autopilot and A$75 per month for eligible vehicles with Enhanced Autopilot. Tesla’s New Zealand page lists NZ$159 per month and says the Enhanced Autopilot price may vary.

At A$149 per month, a year costs A$1,788. That means the former A$10,100 purchase price equated to roughly 68 months, or 5.6 years, of subscription payments before allowing for price changes. This is only a comparison with the former purchase option: it is not a current promise that Australian buyers can still buy FSD outright.

When did Tesla switch to subscription-only?

In Australia, outright purchase was linked to orders placed by March 31, 2026, although delivery could occur later. From April 1, 2026, subscription became the normal route. Reporting also described the same broader transition in Australia and New Zealand; see CarExpert and GoAuto.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That deadline is now historical. Tesla’s New Zealand support page says FSD is not available for outright purchase, while Tesla’s current Australian documentation focuses on subscriptions. A one-time purchase may still matter when assessing a used Tesla if the previous owner bought the package outright.

What does FSD (Supervised) do?

Tesla describes the system as capable of route following, lane changes, navigating around vehicles and objects, and making left and right turns. The available functions depend on the vehicle, software, location and regulatory approval. Tesla’s feature description makes the central limitation clear: the driver must remain fully attentive and ready to take control.

In practical terms, treat it as supervised driver assistance or Level 2 assistance—not a self-driving car. The vehicle does not become autonomous, and the driver remains legally and operationally responsible for what happens on the road.

Who gets the free trial?

Tesla’s official new-owner trial terms describe a 30-day FSD (Supervised) trial, but the exact eligibility and duration can vary by model and trim. The order page’s Show Pricing Details section is the decisive place to check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The key rules are:

  • The buyer must take delivery directly from Tesla.
  • Eligible vehicle lines named by Tesla include Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y and Cybertruck, subject to regional availability and order-specific eligibility.
  • The trial starts automatically at delivery and cannot be saved for later.
  • A third-party purchase is not eligible.
  • Existing subscribers do not receive the trial.
  • A customer who buys FSD outright is not eligible for the trial.
  • A customer who selects a paid subscription when ordering can still receive the trial; the paid subscription starts after the trial expires.
  • The trial is non-transferable, has no cash value, and Tesla may change or withdraw it.
  • Tesla says it does not currently offer other FSD trials.

Do not treat “free trial” as “every new Tesla gets one free month.” Confirm the exact trim, trial duration and post-trial billing terms before ordering. Referral benefits or other order incentives may also affect eligibility.

Which Teslas qualify?

Tesla’s Australian subscription documentation says eligibility requires an FSD computer version 3.0 or 4.0, plus Basic Autopilot or Enhanced Autopilot. Regional, model, trim and software configuration also matter.

Tesla lists both HW3 and HW4 package eligibility, but says the rollout begins with HW4 and that there is no confirmed timing for the feature rollout on HW3 vehicles. Consequently, owners should not assume that an older HW3 Tesla will receive the same access simply because it can technically subscribe.

Payment may also not produce instant access. Tesla says the vehicle must complete a software update before the features become available, and billing begins once that update has been installed. Check the vehicle’s actual upgrade screen and Tesla account rather than relying on a sales listing or the phrase “FSD capable.”

How existing owners subscribe

In Australia, Tesla documents these routes:

  1. Open the Tesla app.
  2. Tap Upgrades.
  3. Tap Software Upgrades.
  4. Select the checkbox for Full Self-Driving (Supervised).
  5. Tap Subscribe.

From the vehicle touchscreen, use Controls > Upgrades, select FSD (Supervised) if the vehicle is eligible, and swipe to subscribe. New Zealand’s documented process is similar through Upgrades > Software Upgrades, followed by Subscribe or Add. See Tesla’s Australian and New Zealand support pages for the market-specific terms.

Cancellation, refunds and suspensions

Australian subscribers can cancel through Upgrades > Manage Upgrades > Full Self-Driving (Supervised) > Manage > Cancel. Access continues until the end of the current billing period, but Tesla says payments are not prorated and refunds are generally unavailable except where required by applicable law, including the Australian Consumer Law.

New Zealand has a similar ordinary no-refund position, subject to rights under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act.

FSD is also conditional on proper use. Tesla says repeated inattentiveness warnings or improper use can produce “strikeouts” and temporary suspension. Depending on the vehicle configuration, access can be suspended for a week after three or five strikeouts. This is not a hands-off convenience feature: continued access depends on the driver following Tesla’s attention requirements.

What happens with a used Tesla?

Used-car buyers need to establish whether FSD is attached to the vehicle or whether the previous owner merely subscribed through their account.

  • If the previous owner subscribed, the new owner generally needs to subscribe through their own Tesla Account.
  • If the previous owner purchased FSD outright, it may transfer with the vehicle under Tesla’s ownership rules.
  • Actual availability still depends on the vehicle’s hardware, software, region and current Tesla account status.

Ask to see the vehicle’s software and upgrade screens, and verify the included package with Tesla before treating FSD as part of the car’s value. Tesla’s relevant Australian FSD guidance explains the distinction.

What about the former transfer program?

Tesla ran a limited FSD and Enhanced Autopilot transfer program for eligible customers ordering a new vehicle by March 31, 2026. The terms required the same Tesla Account, excluded used inventory and commercial vehicles, and said a completed transfer could not be reversed. Tesla’s transfer page now serves as historical context; that deadline has passed.

Should you subscribe?

The subscription is easiest to justify when it is treated as a trialable driving-assistance package rather than an investment in autonomous ownership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A subscription may make sense if you:

  • Drive frequently in urban areas and want to use route following, automated lane changes and intersection handling.
  • Expect to own the vehicle for a short period.
  • Want to test the system without committing to the former A$10,100 or NZ$11,400 upfront price.
  • Have confirmed that your particular vehicle is eligible and that the regional rollout is active.

It may be poor value if you:

  • Drive only occasionally.
  • Expect the car to operate without supervision.
  • Own a vehicle whose HW3 rollout is not confirmed.
  • Plan to keep paying for many years while making limited use of the feature.
  • Are buying a used Tesla without verifying whether FSD was purchased outright or only subscribed to by the previous owner.

Long-term subscribers should monitor the accumulated cost because monthly pricing can change and access ends when payments stop. Conversely, the former outright-purchase route is generally no longer available to new customers, so the old break-even comparison is useful for evaluating historical pricing—not for assuming that a purchase can still be made today.

Safety and legal limits

Tesla publishes collision-reduction statistics and safety comparisons on its own regional pages. Those figures are Tesla’s claims based on Tesla’s data, not an independent comparative study; they should be read with that qualification. See Tesla’s FSD information and vehicle safety report.

Regardless of the marketing name, the driver must supervise the system continuously, maintain proper control and intervene when necessary. Feature availability can also be restricted by local regulation, vehicle configuration, software version or Tesla’s deployment decisions.

How to check before paying

  1. Confirm the country and current monthly price on Tesla’s local support page.
  2. Check the vehicle’s hardware version and whether the regional rollout is active for that configuration.
  3. For a new order, open Show Pricing Details and verify the trial’s duration and conditions.
  4. For a used car, verify whether FSD is included with the vehicle or requires a new subscription.
  5. Confirm that the vehicle can install the required software update.
  6. Budget on the assumption that you remain responsible and attentive for every drive.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
