Tesla delivered fewer vehicles worldwide in 2025 even as global electric-car sales grew. But “Tesla sales are down” is no longer an accurate description of every recent period: TrendForce reported a year-over-year rise in Tesla’s global battery-electric vehicle sales in Q2 2026. Whether Tesla is doing better than competitors depends on the period, market and kind of vehicle being compared—and Cox Automotive’s U.S. first-half estimates show Tesla down more than Ford and GM.
Why are Tesla sales down?
The figures establish that Tesla’s 2025 global deliveries declined from 2024, but they do not establish one cause for that decline. A political backlash, product age or policy change should not be presented as the explanation without evidence showing its contribution. Tesla reported delivering 1,636,129 vehicles in 2025, including 1,585,279 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. It produced 1,654,667 vehicles that year; production and customer deliveries are different measures. Tesla’s 2025 delivery release reports deliveries, not a company-defined “sales” total.
The decline also happened in a growing market. The International Energy Agency says global electric-car sales topped 20 million in 2025, 20% more than in 2024, and accounted for one in four car sales worldwide. Tesla’s own delivery decline therefore cannot be explained simply by saying that electric-car demand fell globally. The IEA’s figures cover electric cars as a market, while Tesla’s figure covers vehicles delivered by one company. (IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026.)
How does Tesla compare with competitors in 2025?
The cleanest broad comparison in the available figures is between global vehicle deliveries and BEV deliveries, not a single all-purpose ranking. Volkswagen Group’s BEV business expanded substantially in 2025, even as its deliveries across all powertrains edged down. The Volkswagen brand is only one part of the group, so its result should not be substituted for the group total.

| Company or measure | 2025 result | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla | 1,636,129 delivered; fewer than in 2024 | Tesla vehicles delivered worldwide; company-reported |
| Volkswagen Group | 983,100 BEVs delivered, up 32%; 8.98 million total vehicles delivered, down 0.5% | Group-wide BEVs and group-wide vehicles across powertrains |
| Volkswagen brand | About 382,000 all-electric vehicles delivered, down 0.2% | One brand, not the Volkswagen Group total |
Volkswagen Group’s growing BEV deliveries show that at least one major multi-brand rival increased its electric-vehicle volume while Tesla’s overall deliveries fell. Yet the numbers are not like-for-like: Tesla’s total includes its vehicle lineup, whereas Volkswagen Group’s 32% rise is specifically for BEVs. Volkswagen Group’s total deliveries also declined slightly. The group’s and brand’s figures come from its 2025 delivery announcement and the Volkswagen brand’s results.
Tesla still had two leading global BEV models
A company’s total deliveries and the market share of its individual models answer different questions. In the IEA’s 2025 global BEV model ranking, the Tesla Model Y accounted for nearly 8% of BEV sales and the Model 3 for 3.6%; the IEA identifies them as the two largest models by sales share. That strong model position does not erase Tesla’s company-wide delivery decline, but it shows why the decline should not be mistaken for a collapse in demand for every Tesla model.

Did Tesla do better than competitors in 2026?
There is no single 2026 result that answers this without specifying geography and measure. The available evidence points in different directions: a stronger Q2 position in global BEV sales, but a steeper estimated first-half decline than Ford and GM in the U.S. new-vehicle market.
Global BEV sales in Q2: Tesla rose, BYD led
TrendForce reported that BYD led global BEV sales in Q2 2026 and Tesla ranked second; TrendForce measured Tesla’s sales as 25% higher year over year. Its separate estimate for the wider new-energy vehicle market (NEV)—which includes BEVs, plug-in hybrids and fuel-cell vehicles—was 5.37 million vehicles, up 10.4%. The NEV market total is not a BEV-only figure, and the ranking does not establish that Tesla outperformed every rival. It does show a Q2 rebound in this global BEV measure after Tesla’s 2025 delivery decline. (Tesla’s reported delivery basis differs from TrendForce’s market sales estimate; the Q2 ranking and NEV estimate are reported by TrendForce.)

U.S. new-vehicle sales in H1: Tesla fell more than Ford and GM
Cox Automotive estimated that U.S. first-half 2026 new-vehicle sales fell 14.6% for Tesla, compared with 10.3% for Ford, 7.2% for GM and 3.0% for the overall market. On this specific comparison, Tesla did not do better than Ford or GM: its estimated decline was larger. These are Cox estimates for the U.S. market, not Tesla’s reported global deliveries.
| U.S. new-vehicle sales estimate, H1 2026 | Change |
|---|---|
| Tesla | −14.6% |
| Ford | −10.3% |
| GM | −7.2% |
| Overall U.S. market | −3.0% |
Cox’s figures are estimates, not company-reported global delivery totals. Cox Automotive’s June 2026 forecast is the source for this U.S.-only comparison.

Q2 company reports show different U.S. and global snapshots
Company-reported Q2 U.S. sales were 714,896 vehicles for GM, down 4%, and 549,200 for Ford, down 10%. Those all-vehicle U.S. totals are not directly comparable with TrendForce’s global BEV measure for Tesla. Hyundai’s report adds another distinct view: it recorded global Q2 sales of 999,015 vehicles and H1 sales of 1,948,377, while its U.S. Q2 sales rose 4% and U.S. H1 deliveries rose 3%. These figures illustrate why a ranking can change with geography, vehicle category and reporting basis.

- Ford’s Q2 2026 U.S. sales release
- Hyundai’s Q2 and first-half 2026 global retail sales results
What Tesla’s latest filing says—and what it does not
Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q reports automotive sales revenue up 27% in Q2 and 24% in H1 year over year. Tesla attributed those increases mainly to approximately 25% more cash deliveries in Q2 and 18% more in H1. It also said the H1 comparison was partly affected because its vehicle factories were brought down simultaneously for the New Model Y changeover in the prior period. These are Tesla’s explanations of its revenue comparisons, not independent proof that any single factor caused the change in deliveries. Revenue is also not a unit-sales measure. How to read the headline without mixing unlike figures
- Check the period: Tesla’s 2025 global delivery decline and Q2 2026 global BEV sales increase describe different periods.
- Check the geography: Cox’s comparison is U.S.-only; Tesla’s annual delivery release is global.
- Check the vehicle category: BEVs are not the same as all vehicles or the broader NEV category.
- Check the reporting basis: Tesla’s delivery release and automaker sales releases are company reports; Cox provides estimates and TrendForce provides a market estimate.
- Check the company scope: Volkswagen brand and Volkswagen Group are not interchangeable.
On the evidence available, the accurate reading is mixed: Tesla’s global deliveries fell in 2025 while the electric-car market grew; Volkswagen Group’s BEV deliveries climbed; Tesla regained ground in TrendForce’s Q2 2026 global BEV measure; and Tesla’s estimated U.S. first-half decline exceeded Ford’s and GM’s. “Better than some competitors” can describe selected periods and measures, not a general verdict about Tesla’s performance.
