A Tesla Cybertruck driver died after a single-vehicle crash near Baytown, Texas, on August 5, 2024. The truck left the road, struck a concrete culvert and caught fire, according to reporting that cited Texas Department of Public Safety information. NHTSA said it was gathering additional information from Tesla; the available reports do not establish what caused the crash or identify a vehicle defect.

What happened in the Cybertruck crash?

The crash occurred at about 1:45 a.m. near Fisher Road and the Grand Parkway in Chambers County, in the Baytown area. A local report citing Texas DPS said the Cybertruck was traveling west on Cedar Parkway when it left the roadway for an unknown reason, struck a concrete culvert and caught fire. The driver died at the scene. Star-Courier News, August 15, 2024; Electrek, August 5, 2024.

Contemporaneous reports said authorities had not identified the driver. The local report said severe burns and fire damage prevented identification of the driver and vehicle details in the DPS account it cited. The reports describe the collision followed by a fire, but do not provide a final forensic determination about how the fire began.

What did NHTSA say?

On August 7, 2024, Teslarati reported that NHTSA was aware of the crash and fire and was gathering additional information from Tesla. The agency’s statement, as quoted by the outlet, was: “aware of the crash and fire, and is gathering additional information from the manufacturer.” Teslarati, August 7, 2024.

That wording describes information gathering. It does not establish that NHTSA had found a defect, concluded a defect caused the crash, or opened a specific defect investigation. The contemporaneous reports do not state that the agency reached any such conclusion.

Was this the first fatal Cybertruck crash?

Contemporaneous news coverage characterized the incident as the first reported fatal Cybertruck crash. That qualification matters: the reports do not provide a complete official history or a formal agency classification establishing it as the first fatal crash in all circumstances. Electrek, August 5, 2024; Teslarati, August 7, 2024.

Do investigators know what caused it?

At the time of the reports, the cause remained unknown and Texas troopers were investigating. The available accounts do not establish whether driver action, road conditions, vehicle systems or another factor contributed. They also do not establish driver-assistance involvement. No cause or defect finding should be inferred from the fact that the vehicle caught fire or that NHTSA sought more information.

What is known about the investigation now?

The contemporaneous coverage documents NHTSA’s information-gathering response in August 2024, but the sources cited here do not establish a final NHTSA or Texas DPS determination. That means the cause and any defect finding are unresolved in these reports; it does not establish that investigators never issued a later update.
