The Subaru BRAT was a compact, Leone-based four-wheel-drive vehicle designed for North America, with a pickup-like bed and two rear-facing bucket seats mounted in the bed. That unusual layout made it instantly recognizable—and explains why the BRAT was never quite a conventional pickup truck.
What does Subaru BRAT stand for?
BRAT is Subaru’s acronym for Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter. Subaru’s official U.S. timeline uses that expansion and describes the BRAT as a small, dual-range 4WD vehicle with two bucket seats fixed to its open bed: Subaru’s history timeline.
When did Subaru make the BRAT?
Subaru’s corporate sources frame the introduction differently. The U.S. history timeline places it in 1977, while a 2018 anniversary retrospective says Subaru debuted the BRAT in 1978. Subaru Saudi Arabia’s heritage timeline specifies an August 1977 launch for the North American export vehicle. The sources do not explain whether the difference reflects launch timing, model-year dating, or another market distinction.
Subaru Saudi Arabia describes the BRAT as an export recreational vehicle for North America, based on the Leone 4WD and launched in August 1977: Subaru Saudi Arabia’s heritage timeline. Subaru of America’s 2018 retrospective connects the vehicle to U.S. demand for small pickups: Subaru of America’s 50th-anniversary retrospective.

These accounts establish the vehicle’s introduction across 1977–78, but they do not settle a single worldwide production end date. An exact final year should be tied to a specific market rather than treated as universal.
Why did the BRAT have seats in the truck bed?
The BRAT’s two rear-facing bucket seats were fixed to the open bed, not part of an enclosed rear passenger cabin. Their position became the model’s signature feature. Subaru’s own timeline confirms the bed-seat arrangement.

MotorTrend reports that the seats were connected to a strategy for qualifying the vehicle differently under the U.S. tariff on imported pickups: MotorTrend’s BRAT history. That is a commonly repeated explanation, but the account is secondary; the available sources do not establish a primary customs determination or support a specific tariff rate or legal classification. The physical design is clear even where the precise trade-policy rationale is not.
Was the Subaru BRAT really a pickup truck?
It had a pickup-like open bed, but its origins and layout set it apart from a conventional truck. Subaru based it on the Leone 4WD passenger-car platform and developed it as a North American recreational utility vehicle. Its combination of a two-seat cabin, four-wheel drive, dual-range capability, and rear bed put it between a compact car and a light utility vehicle.

That blend is central to the BRAT’s identity: it was not simply a conventional truck made smaller. It brought Subaru’s passenger-car-derived 4WD engineering to a body with an open cargo area, then added exposed rear-facing seats that made the design unlike either a typical car or pickup.

The BRAT remains a distinctive example of Subaru combining compact-car engineering and four-wheel drive with an unconventional utility body. The name has also appeared in modern motorsport: Subaru Motorsports USA lists the Brataroo 9500 Turbo, a heavily modified tribute associated with Travis Pastrana’s Gymkhana performance project: Subaru Motorsports USA’s vehicle lineup. It is a tribute vehicle, not evidence of a production-model revival.
