The Spyderco byrd Magpie Black Blade stands out for its black-and-white striped G-10 handle. It is the newest member of Spyderco’s byrd family, based on the Harrier 2, and is offered with either a plain or partially serrated edge. Spyderco listed both versions at $93, but its product page showed them as sold out when accessed on October 3, 2026.
What is the Spyderco Magpie?
The Magpie is a folding knife in Spyderco’s byrd family. Spyderco says its design is based on the Harrier 2. The defining visual feature is the handle: each scale pairs peel-ply-textured black G-10 with sinuous white G-10 inlays, creating the contrasting stripes behind the knife’s name. Spyderco’s Magpie Black Blade listing identifies the product and its construction.
G-10 is an epoxy-infused woven glass-fiber laminate, according to Spyderco’s general handle-material guide. The company says peel-ply texturing exposes a surface that adds traction; that is a description of the material and texture, not a hands-on grip assessment of this particular knife.
What are the Magpie’s blade and construction details?
Spyderco specifies a full-flat-ground blade made from 9Cr18MoV stainless steel, finished with a black oxide coating. The handle is built around nested stainless-steel liners, with a stainless-steel backspacer and a back-lock mechanism. The pocket clip can be configured in four positions.

- Dependable Locking Strength: Its reinforced back lock mechanism provides reliable blade retention, giving users consistent safety and stability during demanding cutting tasks

Spyderco says 9Cr18MoV has more carbon and chromium than its predecessor, which the maker associates with improved edge retention and corrosion resistance. That is the company’s material comparison, not an independent performance finding about the Magpie.
Gear Patrol reports a 3.28-inch blade and a weight of 3.4 ounces. Those measurements are attributed to Gear Patrol; the accessible Spyderco product page did not expose its technical-specification table. See Gear Patrol’s Magpie coverage.

Is the Magpie PlainEdge or serrated?
There are two edge formats. The PlainEdge has a plain cutting edge; the CombinationEdge has a partially serrated edge. Spyderco lists the PlainEdge as SKU BY25GPBK and the CombinationEdge as SKU BY25GPSBK. Both versions share the black-coated blade, striped G-10 scales, back lock, four-position clip and listed price. The available product information does not establish that one format cuts better or is the better choice for every user.
How much does the Spyderco Magpie cost, and is it available?
Spyderco listed both edge versions at $93 on its product page. When that page was accessed on October 3, 2026, it showed the knife as sold out. Availability can change, so check the current Spyderco listing for the latest status before ordering.
