AAOS runs on the vehicle itself; Android Auto projects apps from a phone. That distinction matters when checking what the update means for your car.
What changed in Android Automotive 16?
The open-source AAOS 16 baseline described by Android Authority on June 16, 2025, changes the home screen, assistant controls, volume panel, notifications and app drawer. These are interface changes, not proof that every production vehicle will use the same layout.
- More room for media: The Weather card is removed, and the Media card becomes taller so it can show more information.
- Assistant access: A dedicated voice-assistant button takes the former quick-access volume-control position.
- Volume controls: Volume moves beside brightness. Its panel opens as a fully expanded, compact overlay, labels each audio stream, adds a navigation-volume slider and calls the former “ringer volume” setting “in-call volume.”
- Notifications: The panel receives an opaque background.
- App labels: The app drawer changes from a 5×3 to a 4×3 grid, leaving more room for app names.
- Digital keys: Settings add an Ultra-Wideband toggle associated with digital car keys.
These details describe the open-source baseline, as reported by Android Authority. The exact controls and appearance in a particular car depend on its manufacturer.
Does Android Automotive 16 add Gemini to your car?
AAOS 16 is part of Google’s work to integrate Gemini into vehicles, but the release number alone does not establish that a particular car has Gemini or say when it will arrive. Google describes Gemini as an upgrade from Google Assistant that is starting to roll out in cars with Google built-in. Rollout timing, vehicle support, languages and countries vary.
#1 Best Overall
- SAFER DRIVING WITHOUT LOOKING DOWN – Wirelessly connects to your iPhone or Android via CarPlay and Android Auto, projecting GPS navigation, calls, and music directly onto your windshield. Keep your eyes on the road ahead instead of glancing down at your phone or dashboard – because every second your eyes are off the road is a second too long.
- NO MORE SPEEDING TICKETS – Built-in GPS speedometer displays your real-time speed in large, easy-to-read numbers right in your line of sight. Set a custom overspeed warning alert, and the HUD will flash and beep the moment you exceed your limit – saving you from costly fines and points on your license.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY IN UNDER 5 MINUTES – No complicated installation, no professional tools needed. Simply connect to your vehicle’s OBD port or USB power, place it on your dashboard, and you’re ready to go. Works with practically any car, truck, or SUV – no modification required.
- CRYSTAL-CLEAR PROJECTION DAY AND NIGHT – The ultra-HD display delivers bright, sharp images on your windshield. Auto-dimming sensors adjust brightness based on ambient light – perfectly visible under harsh sunlight and not blinding at night. No glare, no reflection, just clear data when you need it.
- TURN YOUR OLDER CAR INTO A SMART VEHICLE – Why spend thousands upgrading to a new car just for CarPlay? This single device gives your existing vehicle all the smart features you’ve been missing – wireless navigation, hands-free calling, music streaming, and speed monitoring. All the modern driving experience, none of the new car payment.
Google says Gemini can respond to natural-language requests, work with favorite apps and answer questions specific to the vehicle. Google also says Gmail, Calendar and Google Home access is planned to expand by language and country. Those statements describe Google’s intended capabilities and expansion, not guaranteed availability in every car or region. See Google’s announcement for its rollout description.
What voice tasks has Google described?
Google’s developer documentation describes three navigation-intent patterns: starting navigation, displaying relevant search results and executing custom actions. One example of a custom action is reporting traffic congestion by voice. These examples show how automotive apps may connect with assistant requests; they do not mean every app or vehicle supports every action. Details are in Google’s Android Developers announcement.

AAOS 16 versus Android Auto: what runs in your car?
Android Automotive OS (AAOS) runs natively on vehicle hardware. Android Auto instead projects a compatible phone’s experience onto the car’s display. They are separate products, so an Android Auto update or receiver does not install AAOS 16.
| Question | Android Automotive OS | Android Auto |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it run? | On the vehicle’s hardware. | On a compatible phone, projected to the vehicle display. |
| Who determines the in-car software experience? | The automaker can customize the AAOS interface and features. | The phone and compatible car or receiver provide the projection experience. |
| Does AAOS 16 automatically follow from using the other product? | No; having an Android Auto receiver does not establish that the car runs AAOS 16. | No; Android Auto is not an AAOS installation. |
| Is Gemini availability universal? | No. Google’s Gemini rollout for cars with Google built-in varies by vehicle and region. | The AAOS 16 Gemini integration does not itself establish Gemini availability through Android Auto. |
Will every Google-built-in car get the same AAOS 16 interface?
No. Android Automotive is open source, and automakers can customize it substantially. The baseline interface shown in the 2025 report is a reference, not a promise that a named production vehicle will get the same cards, colors, buttons or settings.

In 2026, Google said cars with Google built-in were available in more than 100 models from 16 brands, and described those cars as receiving new and improved apps, including more deeply integrated Gemini and Google Maps. That is an ecosystem count, not a list of cars with AAOS 16 or evidence that all of them share feature parity. The figure and wording are from Google’s 2026 announcement.
To find out what your vehicle supports, check its manufacturer’s release information and vehicle-specific feature documentation. A Google-built-in badge alone does not confirm the AAOS 16 baseline UI or Gemini support.

What Android Automotive app changes are relevant?
Google’s Android for Cars documentation says media apps built with Car App Library became available on Android Automotive OS with library version 1.9. It also documents richer components, including expanded headers, spotlight sections in scrollable areas and grid-item variations. These are developer-facing options; their presence does not mean every media app or car uses them. See the Android for Cars documentation.
Separately, Google’s 2025 I/O recap said video apps would be supported on Android Auto starting with Android 16 phones on select compatible cars, alongside updated car-app quality guidance and testing and distribution tools. This is an Android Auto development, not evidence that AAOS 16 adds video playback to all vehicles. Google’s recap is at Android at I/O 2025.
