There is no single 2025 study establishing a definitive ranking of the safest electric vehicles for families. The strongest available evidence is a set of separate crash-test ratings and award criteria from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), alongside NHTSA’s distinct 5-Star Safety Ratings program. Those results can help narrow a shortlist, but they are not a universal safety score.
What the 2025 evidence can—and cannot—tell you
On September 16, 2025, IIHS reported results for seven recently tested electric vehicles in its updated moderate overlap front crash test. Five had performance that met the moderate-overlap threshold for an IIHS award: four were rated Good and one Acceptable. This test emphasizes protection for a rear-seat passenger; it does not by itself establish which EV is safest overall or best for every family. IIHS’s report also describes other test results and important qualifications.
IIHS awards combine results across specified tests and equipment criteria. NHTSA’s 5-Star program is separate, so an IIHS award and a NHTSA star rating should not be treated as interchangeable. Neither program, on its own, answers every family-specific question, such as whether a particular child restraint fits well in the second row.
What IIHS found in its recent EV tests
| Electric vehicle | Updated moderate overlap front result reported by IIHS | Other relevant qualification in the report |
|---|---|---|
| BMW i4 | Good | IIHS said the model lacked some ratings; a Good result in this test alone is not an overall award or ranking. |
| Chevrolet Blazer EV | Good | Its Acceptable small overlap rating prevented it from qualifying for an award. |
| Tesla Cybertruck | Good | The reported result applies to models built after April 2025, following a front underbody structure change. IIHS said the model lacked some ratings. |
| Volkswagen ID. Buzz | Good | The result is specific to the moderate overlap test; verify the vehicle’s award status against the official award list. |
| Tesla Model 3 | Acceptable | IIHS noted somewhat elevated chest-injury risk in rear-dummy measurements because of high belt forces. |
| Nissan Ariya | Marginal | The result prevented the vehicle from qualifying for an award. |
| Ford F-150 Lightning | Its moderate overlap result prevented an award | Consult the IIHS report for the specific test details and rating scope. |
These results are useful as a focused comparison of rear-seat protection in one test, not as a complete ordering of the vehicles. The report’s model-specific caveats matter: a vehicle may perform well in one category but miss an award threshold in another, or have incomplete test coverage.

Which electric vehicles have an IIHS 2025 award?
IIHS’s 2025 award list includes several electric models, including the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 as Top Safety Pick+ vehicles, and the Tesla Model Y as a Top Safety Pick+ vehicle. Check the official 2025 award list for the exact model, model year, and any build-date limitations before relying on an award for a specific vehicle.
An award is more informative than a single crash-test result because it reflects a set of required results. Under the 2025 criteria, both award levels require Good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests, Acceptable or Good headlights, and Acceptable or Good pedestrian front crash prevention. The updated moderate overlap test must be Acceptable or Good for Top Safety Pick; Top Safety Pick+ requires Good. See IIHS’s criteria and award details for the applicable scope.

- [Fast & Efficient Inflation] Powered by a high-performance motor, the OlarHike air pump delivers rapid airflow — inflate a standard car tire (195/65 R15) from 30 to 35 PSI(+5 PSI) in just 55 seconds, or a larger SUV tire (235/65 R17) from 30 to 35 PSI(+5 PSI) in only 2.2 minutes. Ideal for cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, and sports balls. Important Note: The unit can only inflate car and pickup truck tires up to 51 PSI and is not compatible with heavy-duty pickup trucks or RVs.
- [Dual Power Mode: Power Your Way] Enjoy ultimate inflation flexibility. This tire inflator operates in two convenient ways: Cordless Freedom: Use the built-in rechargeable battery for quick, on-the-go inflation anywhere Continuous Power: Plug into any standard 12V car cigarette lighter using the included cable for endless, worry-free operation
- [High‑Voltage Battery] Equipped with three built-in 3000mAh batteries, this cordless air compressor can handle multiple quick top-offs on a single charge: Up to 28 standard car tires (195/65 R15) from 30 to 35 PSI (+5 PSI). Up to 15 SUV tires (235/65 R17) from 30 to 35 PSI (+5 PSI). Great for long road trips or emergency use—and the USB output lets you charge your phone or other devices on the go. Note:Please charge only with a 5V 2A or 5V 3A adapter. Avoid unbranded or high-power chargers.
- [Ultra Large Display & Auto Shut‑Off] Features a high-precision pressure sensor and oversized dual LED screens for instant, easy-to-read pressure readings. The auto shut-off function stops inflation exactly at your preset PSI (e.g., 30 to 35), helping prevent over-inflation and ensuring safer, more accurate results.
- [Smart & User‑Friendly] Four preset modes for cars, bikes, motorcycles, and sports gear make operation simple. Effortlessly switch between PSI, BAR, KPA, and KG/CM² with one touch. Built-in memory recalls your last used setting for faster, hassle-free use every time.
An award still is not a universal family-safety ranking. It does not erase differences in vehicle class, size, seating layout, or child-restraint fit, and its eligibility may be limited by build date.
How to use NHTSA’s 5-Star ratings
NHTSA’s program evaluates crashworthiness and rollover risk; its safety resources also explain crash-avoidance testing used to inform safety technology recommendations. In October 2024, NHTSA selected 37 model-year 2025 vehicles for testing, including eight electric and hybrid models. That announcement described planned evaluations and said ratings would be posted when testing was complete; it is not proof that every selected EV had a final rating at that time. Check NHTSA’s vehicle-specific results rather than inferring a rating from selection for testing. NHTSA’s announcement and its ratings resources explain the program.

When comparing NHTSA frontal scores, heed the agency’s guidance to compare vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds. A star count should not be used as a shortcut to rank vehicles of very different size or weight.
How families should compare candidate EVs
- Match the exact vehicle. Confirm model year, trim or configuration where relevant, and build date. Test coverage and award eligibility can differ; the Cybertruck’s reported IIHS result, for example, applies only to models built after April 2025.
- Read the test categories separately. Check small overlap, updated moderate overlap, side-impact results, headlights, and pedestrian front crash prevention rather than treating one rating as the whole picture.
- Look at rear-seat findings. The updated moderate overlap test provides information about rear-seat passenger protection. Read any injury-measurement notes as well as the headline grade.
- Compare like with like. Consider vehicle class and size, and follow NHTSA’s same-class and within-250-pound guidance for frontal ratings.
- Check child-seat fit and installation independently. Review the vehicle and child-restraint manuals, try the specific seat in the intended seating position, and confirm that it can be installed correctly. IIHS publishes LATCH ease-of-use ratings, which can help assess installation hardware usability but do not prove that a particular child seat is safest or will fit your vehicle. See IIHS LATCH ease-of-use information.
What “safest for families” means in practice
Crash-test performance is an important part of family safety, but the available ratings answer particular questions under particular test conditions. An IIHS Top Safety Pick+ is a strong signal that a vehicle met the institute’s stated thresholds across several categories; an NHTSA rating adds a distinct view of crashworthiness and rollover performance when a completed, matching model-year result is available. Neither substitutes for checking vehicle-specific coverage and child-restraint fit.

For a practical shortlist, start with vehicles whose exact model year and build date are covered by a current IIHS award, then inspect the individual ratings and NHTSA results for the same configuration. Treat any missing test result as unknown—not as evidence of either safety or danger—and avoid turning ratings from different classes into a single league table.
