Rivian’s Apple Watch app puts common vehicle controls on your wrist, including locking and unlocking, venting windows, sounding the alarm, adjusting cabin temperature and setting a target charge level. The important distinction: those app controls are not the same as a passive Apple Wallet key. Gen 2 R1 owners can use Rivian Digital Key for approach-to-unlock and phone-free access when it is set up; Gen 1 owners get a more limited, app-based experience.
What the Rivian Apple Watch app can do
Rivian announced its Apple Watch companion app on February 19, 2026. It works with the Rivian mobile-app experience and brings selected controls and vehicle information to the watch. Rivian lists the ability to:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Lock or unlock the vehicle.
- Vent the windows or sound the alarm.
- Adjust cabin temperature.
- Set a target state of charge, including with the Digital Crown.
- Choose up to four quick controls for faster access.
These are useful controls for everyday situations, but a command in the Rivian app and a key stored in Apple Wallet serve different purposes. A remote app command may depend on the app, connectivity and the vehicle being reachable. A Wallet Digital Key is intended to provide local vehicle access on supported vehicles, including passive entry on Gen 2 R1s. Rivian’s Apple Watch announcement describes the watch controls and the generation-specific access behavior.

| Capability | Rivian Apple Watch app | Rivian Digital Key in Apple Wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Lock and unlock | Yes, through app controls | Yes, on supported vehicles |
| Climate, windows and alarm | Yes, selected controls are available | Not its main purpose |
| Set charge target | Yes; Rivian describes using the Digital Crown | No |
| Unlock on approach | Not a safe assumption for every vehicle | Passive entry is supported on properly configured Gen 2 vehicles |
| Drive access without an iPhone | Generation and setup matter; Gen 1 requires the app open before driving | Designed for compatible Gen 2 setups |
| Share access | App controls are not the same as sharing a key | Rivian says up to eight Digital Keys can be associated with a vehicle |
In practical terms, the watch app is the wrist-based control panel. Digital Key is the credential that can act as a vehicle key. On Gen 2, the Wallet key is what enables the clearest phone-free, passive-entry use case. Rivian says Digital Key uses the Car Connectivity Consortium standard; Gen 2’s experience also uses ultra-wideband, while NFC at the driver-side door handle provides an additional close-range access method. These technologies do not make every Apple Watch or every Rivian compatible by themselves: vehicle generation, software and key provisioning still matter. See Rivian’s Digital Key overview and its Gen 2 R1 technology description.

What Gen 1 and Gen 2 owners should expect
Gen 1 R1T and R1S
Gen 1 owners can use the Apple Watch app to lock or unlock by tapping the lock control. Rivian’s description says the app needs to be open for the driver to be ready to drive. That is not the same promise as passive Wallet-based approach-to-unlock, so do not assume a successful unlock command means the watch is configured as a complete drive key. Gen 1 owners still get useful wrist controls, but should keep a reliable backup access method available.
Gen 2 R1T and R1S
Gen 2 vehicles are the target for Rivian Digital Key. Once the key is set up in Apple Wallet on a compatible device, passive entry can unlock the vehicle as the driver approaches, and Rivian says a compatible Apple Watch can be used while leaving the iPhone behind. This is the strongest version of “phone-free” access; remote app controls and Wallet key access should not be treated as identical features.

Rivian introduced Digital Key for Gen 2 in software update 2025.46. Its announcement listed an iPhone XS or later and Apple Watch Series 6 or later for Apple-device compatibility at launch. The Apple Watch app is associated with vehicle software 2026.03 in the Rivian App Store listing. Rivian’s 2025.46 announcement said the original Digital Key rollout required Rivian mobile app version 3.8.0 or later; that is a Digital Key launch requirement, not the Apple Watch app’s vehicle-software requirement. Check the current App Store listing and Rivian support information before relying on a specific device or software combination, since requirements can change.
Compatibility at a glance
| Requirement | What the available Rivian information says |
|---|---|
| Vehicle for passive Wallet Digital Key | Gen 2 R1 vehicles |
| Apple Watch for Digital Key | Series 6 or later, as listed by Rivian at launch |
| iPhone for Digital Key setup/use | iPhone XS or later, as listed by Rivian at launch |
| Vehicle software for Apple Watch app | 2026.03 or later is the version associated with the watch app in the App Store listing |
| Original Digital Key rollout | Vehicle software 2025.46 and Rivian app 3.8.0 or later |
The Series 6 and iPhone XS statements refer to Rivian’s Digital Key compatibility announcement, not a guarantee that every watch-app function works on every such device indefinitely. An app update, watchOS version, region or later Rivian requirement may affect availability. If you are considering buying a watch for this feature, verify the live requirements first—and weigh the more limited Gen 1 experience against your actual needs.

How to get started
Rivian’s public announcement and store listing establish the core prerequisites, but do not provide a dependable, current screen-by-screen setup path. Menu names and prompts may change between app and vehicle-software revisions. Use the Rivian app’s on-screen instructions rather than relying on a guessed menu label.
- Check vehicle software. Confirm the vehicle is on 2026.03 or later for the Apple Watch app. For Digital Key, Gen 2 eligibility and the relevant software are also required.
- Update the Rivian iPhone app. Install the latest version available to you. The version 3.8.0 requirement refers to the initial 2025.46 Digital Key rollout.
- Install or enable the watch app. Use the iPhone’s Watch app to locate Rivian and install or enable its Apple Watch companion, then follow Rivian’s prompts. Sign in with the Rivian account associated with the vehicle and select the right vehicle if the account has more than one.
- For Gen 2 Digital Key, provision the Wallet key. Add the Rivian key to Apple Wallet on the iPhone and complete the prompts to add it to the compatible Apple Watch. Confirm the key is associated with the intended vehicle.
- Test before depending on it. Try the app controls while near the vehicle. For a Gen 2 Wallet key, separately test approach unlock and the vehicle’s drive-access behavior. Keep your usual backup key available during testing.
- For Gen 1 access, open the Rivian watch app. Tap the lock control as needed, and follow Rivian’s stated requirement to have the app open before driving. Do not infer passive entry from app-based lock/unlock.
If the watch does not unlock or start the Rivian
- First check the vehicle generation. Passive Wallet-based entry is the Gen 2 Digital Key use case. Gen 1’s documented watch behavior is app-based lock/unlock, with the app open before driving.
- Check vehicle and app versions. Confirm 2026.03 or later for the watch app, update the Rivian app, and verify the Digital Key setup requirements applicable to your vehicle.
- Make sure you are testing the right feature. Opening the Rivian watch app and sending a lock command tests app controls; it does not confirm that an Apple Wallet Digital Key is installed on the watch.
- Revisit Wallet provisioning. If the key appears on the iPhone but not the watch, check watch compatibility, Apple account setup, Wallet provisioning, and whether the key belongs to the vehicle you are trying to use. Follow current Rivian and Apple prompts; do not remove a working key unless you have another way into the vehicle.
- Separate local access from remote commands. An app command or status refresh can fail when connectivity or vehicle availability is poor even if a locally provisioned Wallet key behaves differently. Try the NFC reader on the driver-side door handle as an additional access path if your Digital Key setup supports it.
- Keep a physical backup. Carry or keep access to a key card or another approved backup until the watch has been tested reliably. Lost-device, battery and power-reserve behavior can vary, so do not make an untested watch your only access method.
Rivian says its Digital Key is stored in the device’s operating-system wallet and protected by the device’s security features. It also states that up to eight digital keys can be supported per vehicle. Share a key through the supported Digital Key process rather than sharing a Rivian account password; key sharing is distinct from driver profiles and physical keys. For a lost device or a persistent setup problem, use Rivian’s current support guidance rather than assuming a general reset procedure.

Does it replace your phone?
Not universally. The Apple Watch app extends Rivian controls to the wrist, but remote app actions may still need connectivity and an available vehicle connection. Gen 1 access has the additional app-open caveat. A compatible Gen 2 Apple Wallet Digital Key is the route Rivian describes for passive, phone-free entry and driving access. If you mainly want climate, window or charge controls, the app may be the useful part; if you want to leave the iPhone behind, check Gen 2 eligibility and complete Wallet provisioning first.
Who benefits most?
The update is useful for supported owners who want quick controls without taking out a phone. It is most transformative for Gen 2 owners already using Digital Key, because the watch can combine vehicle controls with passive access. Gen 1 owners still gain a convenient control surface, but should regard it as app-based wrist access—not as a universal replacement for a key card, phone or other backup. The feature is software, not a reason by itself to buy a new Apple Watch, pay for cellular service, or change vehicles.
