Richard Rawlings put most of his car collection up for a no-reserve online auction in September 2022, but the available reporting does not establish that the sale brought in more than $1 million. The event was conducted through Bring a Trailer and included cars, motorcycles and other lots; Rawlings said he planned to reinvest in a different mix of collector cars.
What happened to Richard Rawlings’ car collection?
In August 2022, Gas Monkey Garage announced that Rawlings planned to start over with his collection, which spanned pre-war cars, automotive icons, muscle cars and trucks. The sale began on Bring a Trailer on September 7 and was scheduled to close on September 14, with a livestreamed closeout at Gas Monkey Garage. The auction was advertised as having no reserves, meaning the lots did not have minimum sale prices set by the seller. How many lots were included?
The published counts differ. The auction announcement described more than 25 vehicles, while D Magazine reported 23 cars, two motorcycles, a chassis and a Gas Monkey Garage tour. Those figures use different descriptions of the sale’s scope, so they should not be collapsed into a single definitive vehicle count. Which cars and other items were for sale?
Examples named in contemporaneous coverage included a 1962 Chevrolet Corvette, a 1986 Zimmer Quicksilver, a 2022 Ford Bronco and the “King T” Ford Model T. The King T was a custom car built by Gene Winfield and won the Most Beautiful Roadster award at the 1964 Oakland Roadster Show. The auction announcement also noted that the car had been represented as a Hot Wheels car and an MPC model kit.

The mix ranged from recognizable production cars to distinctive customs. However, the cited coverage identifies examples rather than providing a complete inventory with comparable final sale prices, so it does not support a price-by-price account of the collection.
Why did Rawlings sell most of the collection?
Rawlings described the sale as a change in collecting direction, not as a response to a stated financial problem. He said he wanted to reinvest in cars with strong pedigrees, including rare American cars from the 1980s and 1990s as well as classic Mercedes, Ferraris and Lamborghinis. In the auction announcement, he said, “I want to reinvest in hotrods with super big pedigrees. I want Mercedes, Ferraris, Lamborghinis and more.” CultureMap Dallas also reported his stated desire to collect things he had not previously been able to achieve.

Did the collection sell for more than $1 million?
The contemporaneous sources cited here do not report a final aggregate auction total. They establish the sale’s timing, no-reserve format and reported scope, but do not verify that proceeds exceeded $1 million. Rawlings was quoted by D Magazine saying, “These cars will sell for what they’re worth,” but that comment is not a record of the final result. The $1 million claim should therefore be treated as unconfirmed unless supported by a reliable auction-results record.
It is also more accurate to say Rawlings sold most of his collection than that he sold every car he owned: D Magazine described the sale as involving most of the collection, and the auction coverage does not establish that it included literally all of his vehicles.
