There is no single “best” Porsche 911 restomod builder: the right choice depends on the donor generation, intended use and how much of the car you want re-engineered. Singer and Gunther Werks have distinct road-car programs; Tuthill explicitly works across road, rally and racing; Theon, Rindt and other specialists offer different forms of bespoke work. Here is what the available information establishes about their approaches and illustrative cars—not a league table.
How to compare 911 restomod builders
“Restomod” covers a range of work, from restoring and modifying a customer’s car to building around a donor sourced by the workshop or preparing a competition car. A restomod is not automatically the same service at every Porsche specialist. Before choosing a builder, define the project you actually want.
- Donor: Which 911 generation does the company work from, and can it use your car?
- Purpose: Is the priority road touring, track use, rallying or a road car intended to do a little of everything?
- Intervention: Does the brief call for a faithful restoration with selected upgrades, or extensive engineering and redesigned components?
- Personalization: Is the car built to an owner’s specifications, or does the company offer a defined model program?
- Support: Ask directly about warranty coverage, servicing, delivery geography, availability and lead time. Published specifications and warranty language are company statements, not independent test results.
A November 2024 Bonhams catalogue describes RUF Automobile, Singer, Tuthill, Lanzante and Rindt Vehicle Design as contributors to the expanding restomod scene (Bonhams catalogue). A specialist builder’s overview names additional options, including Theon Design, Gunther Werks, PRINZIP R, Paul Stephens AutoArt, Emory Motorsports, Straat and Workshop 5001 (specialist overview). These are useful starting points, not a complete global roster or a neutral ranking.

Singer Vehicle Design: Type 964 restoration, from naturally aspirated to turbocharged
Singer says its Carrera Coupe Reimagined service begins with an owner sending in a Type 964. The car is disassembled to its steel monocoque, assessed and prepared, and receives chassis strengthening developed in consultation with Red Bull Advanced Technologies. Singer says the engine was developed with Cosworth and specifies a 4.0-litre flat-six producing 420 hp (Singer Vehicle Design). These are the company’s published details, not independently measured performance figures.

Sorcerer illustrates a more extreme direction: Singer identifies it as the first car reimagined through its DLS Turbo services and reunited with its owner. Singer reports a Type 964-based 3.8-litre flat-six with two variable-geometry turbochargers, rated at 710 hp (SAE net) and 750 Nm in its January 22, 2026 announcement (Singer’s DLS Turbo announcement). The figures distinguish the turbocharged program from the naturally aspirated Carrera Coupe specification; they are not results from an independent road test. Singer founder, executive chairman and creative director Rob Dickinson described DLS Turbo as an exploration of turbocharging the engine developed through the DLS program, for road and track.
Tuthill: road builds as well as rally and race cars
Tuthill’s official build page organizes its work into road, rally and race categories (Tuthill build services). For road use, it describes bespoke builds based either on a customer’s vehicle or a donor it sources, alongside servicing, maintenance and repairs. Its rally work includes historic 911 competition, bespoke rally builds and preparation; its race work includes historic 911 racers and bespoke race construction.

The cited page does not identify one creation as Tuthill’s greatest. Its clearest distinction is the range of purposes it supports: a prospective customer should explain whether the car is for road touring, historic rally or circuit competition before comparing it with a road-focused commission elsewhere.
Gunther Werks: a 993-based program range
Gunther Werks names the Porsche 993—the final air-cooled 911 generation—as the foundation for its work and says it designs, engineers and manufactures much of its componentry in the United States. Its homepage lists programs including GXR EVO, F-26, Turbo, GWR, GWX, Speedster and Coupe (Gunther Werks). F-26 and GWX are examples of a broad catalog, not evidence that either is the company’s objectively greatest car.

The company’s homepage says every commission has a five-year or 100,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first. Treat that as a company-published term and confirm the current coverage, exclusions and applicability to a specific commission directly before relying on it.
Theon Design: one-off commissions and reported low-volume production
MEX001, described by Wallpaper* as a private commission, illustrates Theon Design’s bespoke approach. Wallpaper* characterizes the UK firm’s one-off cars as combining aesthetic and mechanical elements from different 911 generations. Its April 22, 2026 article reports around 6,000 hours per build and a maximum output of six cars a year (Wallpaper* on Theon Design’s MEX001). Those are reported figures, not audited production guarantees; they do not establish a particular car’s price or a buyer’s likely lead time.

Rindt Vehicle Design: a commission tied to the owner’s brief
Bonhams describes a bespoke Rindt customer car based on a 1974 G-Series 911. The client commissioned it to match their birth year and touring-use wishes (Bonhams catalogue). It is an illustrative example of a brief shaped around both the donor’s provenance and how its owner intended to use it, rather than a standardized model with a published comparative ranking.

The broader landscape includes RUF Automobile and Lanzante, both named alongside Singer, Tuthill and Rindt in the Bonhams catalogue, as well as PRINZIP R, Paul Stephens AutoArt, Emory Motorsports, Straat and Workshop 5001 in the specialist overview. The overview is published by a builder, so treat its list as a lead for further enquiries rather than an independent assessment of each company. The available information here does not establish comparable donor policies, specifications or signature creations for every name.

How to shortlist a workshop for your project
- Write a one-page brief. State the donor generation or car you own, intended use, desired level of modification and any non-negotiable features.
- Ask how the donor is handled. Confirm whether the builder will work on your car, source a donor, or only accept particular generations. Singer’s cited programs are Type 964-based; Gunther Werks names the 993 as its foundation; the cited Rindt commission used a 1974 G-Series car.
- Match the workshop to the use. Tuthill explicitly describes road, rally and race services. For other builders, ask what the proposed specification is designed to do rather than assuming a road car is competition-ready.
- Request a written scope. Ask which restoration, structural, engine and component changes are included, what is custom-built, and what remains original. Company descriptions can indicate philosophy, but do not replace a project-specific specification.
- Verify commercial and ownership terms. Get current pricing, order availability, delivery geography, lead time, warranty, maintenance arrangements and exclusions in writing. These details are not established consistently across the builders discussed here.
- Separate claims from evidence. Treat horsepower and torque as published specifications unless an independent test is identified. A reported build-hour figure, a company warranty and a tested performance result are different kinds of evidence.
