Gordini was Renault’s sporting identity, created through Amédée Gordini’s tuning and engineering work and applied to faster versions of ordinary Renaults. It was not a separate Renault model family, and it was never just a pair of white stripes. The key road cars are the Dauphine Gordini, Ondine Gordini, Renault 8 Gordini and Renault 12 Gordini; Renault’s own partnership summaries also include the Renault 17. A separate but connected story is the Gordini Cup, Renault’s one-make racing series, whose later R5 and Clio competition cars should not automatically be called Gordini-badged road cars.
The name returned in a different form with the Renault 8 Gordini Concept, announced on 24 September 2026. It is a two-seat electric heritage concept with a stated 270 hp, not a confirmed production model or a car currently available to buy.

What does Gordini mean on a Renault?
Gordini identifies a sporting derivative of a mainstream Renault. Amédée Gordini was the engineer and tuner whose mechanical work helped give Renault small family cars more performance and a competition-ready character. Renault then used the name as part of its own product identity.

That distinction matters when looking at old photographs or modern listings. A Renault wearing racing-style stripes is not automatically a Gordini. The name refers to a specific factory or officially documented sporting version, while paint, decals and later restoration choices can be changed at any time. Renault’s description of the formula is that giving the Gordini name to a sporty production model made advanced performance affordable, years before the later GTI boom.

The best-known visual clue is the R8’s twin white stripes. They became an icon, but the engineering specification and the period documentation matter more than the decoration. A genuine identification should connect the body, mechanical equipment, model year and market to a Gordini version rather than relying on one badge or stripe kit.
The early cars: Dauphine Gordini and Ondine Gordini
Dauphine Gordini
The Dauphine was the first major expression of the Renault–Gordini relationship. Renault Group dates the unveiling of the Dauphine Gordini to the 1957 Paris Motor Show. Gordini’s work improved the Dauphine’s engine and gearbox, turning Renault’s small rear-engined family car into a more sporting derivative without abandoning its everyday production-car basis.
Renault Originals records the Dauphine Gordini as a distinct variant and displays historical production and performance information. Its page contains conflicting date cues, and the exact chronology varied by version and market, so it is safer to treat the car as an early Gordini derivative than to attach one universal production-span claim to every Dauphine carrying the name.
Ondine Gordini
Renault also documented an Ondine Gordini. The Ondine was the better-trimmed member of the Dauphine family, and the Gordini version applied the same basic idea of factory-backed mechanical and sporting improvement to that related model. It should be listed separately from the Dauphine Gordini when cataloguing cars, rather than collapsed into one single Dauphine production run.
For historians and collectors, the practical lesson is to identify the underlying car first: Dauphine or Ondine, then the Gordini variant, then the market and year. That approach avoids treating every early Renault with a similar rear-engine layout or later-added graphics as the same model.

Renault 8 Gordini: the defining road car
The Renault 8 Gordini is the nameplate’s central reference point. Renault dates its launch to 1964 and describes a rear-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive and 95 hp. Those figures belong to Renault’s account of the 1964 car; they should not be transferred to every later R8 specification or to cars sold in every market.
The R8 Gordini made the idea of accessible performance visible. It retained the compact, practical architecture of the mass-market Renault 8 but gave it a clear sporting purpose. The twin white stripes became the signature most people associate with Gordini, while the rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout linked the road car to the driving character Renault wanted from its competition programme.
Renault calls the R8 a sporty derivative of a mass-market model. That wording explains why Gordini mattered: buyers did not need to move to an exotic, unrelated sports-car range to get a car with competition credibility. They could choose a recognisable Renault and receive a factory-defined performance version.
When comparing an R8 Gordini with another Renault, keep the comparison tied to the exact year and variant. The documented 95 hp figure is useful for the 1964 launch reference, but it is not a standalone statistic for the entire R8 Gordini nameplate. Equipment, tuning and market specifications can differ across the car’s history.
Renault 12 Gordini: a larger successor to the idea
The Renault 12 Gordini extended the formula to Renault’s newer, larger family saloon. Renault Originals says it was presented publicly at the Paris Motor Show in October 1970. Renault Italy’s motorsport history also describes the 1970 launch and records the “G-Day” owners’ gathering at Paul Ricard.

Those references establish the period and public presentation, but “presented” is not necessarily the same as one universal sales date in every country. A catalogue entry should therefore state the October 1970 public presentation and identify the market before making a claim about registration or delivery timing.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The R12 Gordini belongs in the road-car lineage, not only in the racing story. It carried the Gordini idea into a different type of Renault: less tiny and rear-engined than the R8, but still intended to make sporting performance available through a familiar production model. The available Renault material does not provide a single complete set of R12 engine and drivetrain figures for every market, so broad power comparisons with the R8 would be misleading.
Where the Renault 17 fits
Renault’s partnership summaries name the Renault 17 among the subsequent models associated with the Gordini relationship. That is enough to place the R17 in the broader sequence of Renault sporting products, but the sources used here do not provide detailed Gordini R17 specifications. It should therefore be mentioned as part of the documented partnership history, not described with unverified engine outputs, body details or production dates.
Gordini road models versus the Gordini Cup
Renault’s sporting legacy did not end with the road badges. Renault dates the R8 Gordini Cup to 1966, a one-make competition designed to put closely related cars on the same circuit and develop drivers. The series later used Renault 12 competition cars, then R5 competition variants and successive Clio Cup generations. Renault describes the Clio Cup Series as the heir to the R8 Gordini Cup.
This is a competition lineage, not a catalogue of Gordini road models. A car can have raced in the Gordini Cup or its successor series without having been sold to the public as a Gordini-badged road car. The R5 and Clio competition cars are therefore best described as cup or championship cars unless a particular road version is separately documented as a Gordini.

The distinction also explains why references to “Gordini” can appear in racing histories long after the last classic road model. The name survived as an organising principle and a series legacy even when the competition cars were identified by their Renault model and cup category rather than by a new Gordini road badge.
Model and lineage guide
| Model or lineage | Documented period or event | What the Gordini identity means here | How to classify it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dauphine Gordini | Unveiled at the 1957 Paris Motor Show, according to Renault Group | Gordini improved the Dauphine’s engine and gearbox | Early factory sporting road variant; exact production chronology depends on variant and market |
| Ondine Gordini | Documented by Renault Originals as a related early variant | Gordini treatment applied to the better-trimmed Ondine | Separate related variant, not interchangeable with every Dauphine Gordini |
| Renault 8 Gordini | Launched in 1964 | 95 hp reference, rear-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive and iconic twin white stripes | Defining Gordini road car |
| Renault 12 Gordini | Publicly presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1970 | Sporting R12 derivative carrying the road-car badge | Later Gordini road model; do not infer one universal sales date |
| Renault 17 | Named in Renault’s partnership summary | Part of the subsequent Gordini-associated model sequence | Keep specifications qualified because detailed figures are not established here |
| R8 Gordini Cup, later R12, R5 and Clio competition cars | R8 Gordini Cup began in 1966; Clio Cup is described as its heir | One-make racing and sporting legacy | Competition lineage, not proof of a Gordini-badged road version |
| Renault 8 Gordini Concept | Announced 24 September 2026; planned Paris Motor Show display, 12–18 October 2026 | Two-seat electric heritage concept, stated at 270 hp | Design exploration, not confirmed production or retail specification |
How to identify a Gordini correctly
Start with the underlying Renault model
Confirm whether the car is a Dauphine, Ondine, R8, R12 or another model named in Renault’s historical summaries. The same stripe pattern can be reproduced on different cars, so the base model is the first filter.
Separate factory identity from later appearance
Look for period documentation, model-specific mechanical details and a traceable history. Stripes, badges, wheels or a blue competition-style paint scheme may be authentic, restored, replaced or added later. They are clues, not proof by themselves.
Attach every claim to a year and market
Historical Renault specifications changed by variant and country. State “1964 Renault 8 Gordini, 95 hp” rather than presenting 95 hp as the output of every R8 Gordini. Use the same discipline for production dates: the early Dauphine and Ondine chronology is not one simple worldwide timeline, and the R12’s October 1970 Paris presentation does not establish every market’s retail date.

Keep road and race descriptions separate
If a listing refers to an R5 or Clio used in a Gordini Cup successor, describe the competition history accurately. Do not convert that reference into a claim that the road car was sold as a Gordini unless Renault documentation for that exact version supports it.

What the 2026 Renault 8 Gordini Concept changes—and what it does not
On 24 September 2026, Renault announced the Renault 8 Gordini Concept as an exploratory heritage project. Renault describes a two-seat electric coupe with 270 hp, inspired by the R8 and intended to bring a rear-wheel-drive icon’s spirit into the electric era. The 270 hp number is a concept specification, not a tested production output.
Renault planned to show the concept at the Paris Motor Show from 12 to 18 October 2026. Planned exhibition dates and an announcement do not establish series production, homologation, pricing or retail availability. Unless Renault later confirms those details, the concept belongs in the heritage and design category rather than in a list of current Gordini road cars.
Renault design vice-president Alexandre Malval described the project this way: “With Renault 8 Gordini Concept, we wanted to spark emotion by drawing on both our heritage and modern times, bringing together the icons of yesterday and the future.” The statement captures the concept’s purpose: reinterpretation, not a claim that the 1960s R8 has returned unchanged.
Why the Gordini name still matters
Gordini connected three things that are often separated in car history: an engineer’s tuning expertise, a mass-production Renault and an organised path into motorsport. The Dauphine and Ondine established the early partnership; the R8 made the name iconic; the R12 broadened the sporting road-car formula; and the cup series kept the competitive identity alive through later Renault generations.
The most accurate short definition is therefore: Gordini was Renault’s name for accessible sporting derivatives shaped by Amédée Gordini’s engineering legacy, with a parallel one-make racing tradition. The classic road models and the race series belong to the same story, but they are not the same list. The 2026 R8 Gordini Concept continues the visual and emotional heritage as an electric design study, while its production future remains unconfirmed.
