Its appeal is part design tribute and part personal history: Lee Iacocca helped champion the original Mustang, then returned to the nameplate for this small-run anniversary project.
What is the Iacocca Mustang?
Announced in 2009 as a commemorative 2009½ Mustang, the Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition was based on the 2009 model and reshaped with fastback styling. In a 2009 interview with Neil Cavuto, Iacocca described it as a styling exercise and said the plan was to build 45 silver cars. The figure is the announced production quantity; it should not be treated as an independently verified final production count. Iacocca’s 2009 interview
The Mustang was closely tied to Iacocca’s career at Ford. He recalled the car as the high point of his automotive work and credited himself with a central role while recognizing the people around him. In the foreword to Colin Comer’s 2014 book Shelby Mustang Fifty Years, he wrote: “The answer was the 1964½ Mustang, a car I am credited with being the ‘father’ of. However, it was a team effort by my staff at Ford.” Colin Comer’s book site
Who created it, and what set it apart?
The launch announcement described a collaboration involving Iacocca, designer Michael Leone and Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters. The project was associated with I Legacy, with sales and marketing through Galpin Ford. Its defining visual choices were the fastback treatment and a special silver finish, complemented by Iacocca branding and bespoke interior and wheel details. These are the reported announcement-era specifications, not a substitute for checking an individual car’s equipment. 2009 announcement details

The combination made the car more than a badge package: its body styling, numbered trim and anniversary story gave it a distinct identity within the 2009 Mustang range.
What engine did the Iacocca Mustang have?
Launch-era coverage described a 4.6-liter Ford V8 in two reported configurations: a 320-horsepower setup with Ford Racing cold-air induction, or an optional Ford Racing supercharger configuration rated at 400 horsepower. Those are the advertised configurations; a buyer evaluating a specific car should verify its installed equipment and supporting records rather than assume every example matches one description. For example, Barrett-Jackson’s archived listing for car #13 describes that individual 2009 car with a 4.6-liter V8, five-speed manual transmission, 320 hp and Ford Racing cold-air induction, along with custom chrome wheels, embroidered seats, a signature plaque, suspension and brake equipment, and supporting documentation. The listing calls it the only one of the 45 with cold-air induction; that claim applies to the auctioned car’s listing and is not, by itself, a verified rule for all cars. How many Iacocca Mustangs were made?
The 2009 interview and launch-era announcement said 45 cars were planned, all in silver. That small announced run is central to the edition’s rarity, but the available announcement-era reporting establishes the plan, not an independently audited final production registry. What is an Iacocca Mustang worth?
There is no current value established by the historical auction figures alone. A 2009 press release reported that car number five sold for $352,000 at the October 2009 Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction. Barrett-Jackson’s archive also records car #13 as sold at its Las Vegas 2021 auction, but the archived entry is a record of that individual car, not a present-day price guide. 2009 sale report · 2021 auction archive entry
To assess a car today, compare recent sales of documented Iacocca examples and account for condition, mileage, provenance and verified equipment. The dated $352,000 sale is an individual historical transaction, not an average, appraisal or current market estimate.

What to check when considering one
Because the edition was a small-run, customized Mustang, identity and documentation matter alongside condition. Before treating a car as a properly equipped example, check:
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Detailed Die-cast metal body with plastic parts
- Large Apx 9-1/2" replica
- Opening doors and engine compartment
- Full functioning steering
- Four-wheel suspension
- Numbered identity: Confirm the signature plaque and any available records that connect the car to the edition.
- Build details: Verify the engine configuration and installed options for that specific car; advertised offerings and individual equipment can differ.
- Provenance: Review ownership history, supporting documents and any auction records.
- Condition: Assess the bodywork, interior, mechanical systems and the quality of any restoration or modifications.
- Comparable sales: Use recent sales of similarly documented cars rather than relying on a single older result.
