Most Reliable 10-Year-Old Midsize Sedans: What the Evidence Says

The Honda Accord and Toyota Camry have strong reliability signals, but available rankings do not prove which 2016 midsize sedan is most reliable at ten years. Here’s how to interpret the evidence and evaluate the car you’re considering.

If you’re shopping for a 10-year-old midsize sedan in 2026, start with the 2016 Honda Accord and Toyota Camry—but treat them as strong candidates, not a proven ranking of decade-old cars. Available evidence favors both models, yet it does not establish which 2016 midsize sedan is most reliable after ten years. The specific car’s maintenance, accident history, configuration, and present condition matter more than a model-wide reputation.

Which 10-year-old midsize sedans have the strongest reliability evidence?

A 10-year-old car in 2026 is roughly a 2016 model-year vehicle. Its actual time in service depends on when it was built and first sold. Among mainstream midsize sedans, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry have the clearest support in the available evidence, but neither source measures the full decade of ownership.

  • Honda Accord: RepairPal places the Accord first in its current midsize-car ranking, with a listed average annual repair cost of $400.
  • Toyota Camry: RepairPal places the Camry third, with a listed average annual repair cost of $388. Separately, the Camry won the midsize-car segment in J.D. Power’s 2019 Vehicle Dependability Study, which covered model-year 2016 vehicles at about three years old.

The RepairPal figures aggregate model years 2010–2019 rather than isolating 2016 cars or cars that have reached ten years. The J.D. Power result is an early-ownership signal, not a decade-long verdict. Neither can guarantee the reliability of an individual used car.

What do the reliability rankings actually measure?

RepairPal: repair cost, frequency, and severity

RepairPal says its Reliability Rating combines the cost, frequency, and severity of unscheduled repairs and maintenance, drawing on millions of repair invoices and additional automotive statistics and predictive data science. Its current midsize-car page covers 2010–2019 model years, reports a 4.0 out of 5.0 category rating, and ranks midsize cars third among 19 vehicle types. It lists an average annual repair cost of $526, about 0.3 unscheduled shop visits per year, and a 12% probability of a severe repair. RepairPal defines a severe issue using a repair-cost threshold of three times the average annual repair cost across all models. These are category-level figures, not forecasts for a particular 2016 sedan. RepairPal’s midsize reliability data and methodology.

J.D. Power: owner-reported problems at about three years

As reported by Cars.com, J.D. Power’s 2019 Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed about 33,000 original owners of model-year 2016 vehicles in late 2018. Owners reported problems from 177 specific problem types experienced during the previous 12 months. Results were expressed as problems per 100 vehicles (PP100); lower scores are better. The Camry was the midsize-car segment winner. This is evidence from vehicles at roughly three years old, not ten.

Dave Sargent, J.D. Power’s vice president of global automotive, explained the survey’s emphasis: “Certain owner dislikes are counted in this study, but the bias is still more toward things failing, breaking, wearing out, falling off, working sporadically — that type of thing.”

Why there is no definitive 10-year-old winner

The two sources answer different questions. RepairPal reports repair-oriented model and category aggregates across a broad range of model years; J.D. Power reports owner-described problems for the 2016 cohort at about three years old. Neither supplies a head-to-head reliability ranking for 2016 midsize sedans after a decade in service. No population-level statistic on how many 2016 midsize sedans remain in service at ten years is established by these sources.

When comparing reliability claims, check what vehicles and outcomes they cover: model years, vehicle age, whether the data comes from owner reports or repair invoices, and whether it measures repair cost, frequency, severity, or reported problems. A ranking based on one measure should not be treated as a universal reliability score.

How to assess a specific used sedan before buying

Edmunds’ used-car guidance, republished by AP News, includes 2013–2017 Honda Accords among midsize-car options. Those Accords were available with four-cylinder or V6 engines and manual or automatic transmissions. That range of configurations is one reason to verify the exact car rather than relying on a nameplate alone.

  1. Confirm the vehicle’s identity and configuration. Match the model year, trim, engine, transmission, and—if applicable—hybrid system to the vehicle identification number (VIN) and records.
  2. Review its history. Check maintenance records and reported accidents or other problems. Edmunds’ guidance advises avoiding vehicles that show signs of neglect or abuse.
  3. Assess its present condition. Compare the car’s condition and documentation with its model-level reputation. If you cannot confidently evaluate it yourself, arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection.
  4. Check for open recalls by VIN. Use the appropriate official recall resource for the vehicle’s market; a model-level reputation cannot establish whether a specific car has an unresolved recall.
  5. Use rankings as context, not a prediction. RepairPal’s figures can help frame model-level comparisons, but they are not an estimate of the next owner’s individual repair bills.

Camry vs. Accord: how to make the call

The evidence does not prove that one is more reliable than the other after ten years. The Accord leads RepairPal’s current midsize model list, while the Camry has both a strong RepairPal placement and the 2016 segment win in J.D. Power’s roughly three-year-old dependability study. Since those measures cover different populations and ages, they do not create a decisive decade-old comparison. For a purchase, prioritize the better-documented, better-maintained individual car in the configuration you want.
