For a reliable, fuel-efficient used SUV, begin with compact and subcompact models that Consumer Reports recommended when new, rated average-or-better for reliability, and measured at 26 mpg or better in its tests. If you need three rows, use a separate benchmark: CR’s selected five-year-old three-row SUVs achieved at least 20 mpg in its tests when new and had average-or-better reliability. These are useful ways to narrow a search—not guarantees about a particular vehicle or a ranking of every SUV from 2016 through 2026.
How to interpret the reliability and fuel-economy evidence
Reliability ratings describe patterns, not the SUV in front of you
Consumer Reports bases its reliability analysis on problems and repairs reported by members, weighting issues by severity. Its 2026 reliability coverage describes survey data on more than 380,000 vehicles. That is a large dataset, but it is not a census, and a model-level result cannot tell you whether an individual used SUV was maintained well or has a hidden fault. Consumer Reports’ reliability methodology explains the basis of its ratings.
Keep fuel-economy figures comparable
EPA fuel-economy figures and publisher test results are different measures. Compare EPA with EPA or test results with test results, and check the exact model year, engine, drivetrain, and trim: figures may vary across configurations. CR’s used-SUV ratings database includes fields for reliability, fuel economy, dimensions, cargo, towing, and safety features, though detailed ratings may require membership. See Consumer Reports’ used-SUV ratings database.
Start with the SUV size and seating you actually need
Compact and subcompact SUVs
CR’s June 2026 guide to used compact and subcompact SUVs selected vehicles that were recommended when new, had average-or-better reliability, and returned at least 26 mpg in CR testing when new. Treat that threshold as a screening criterion, not a promise of real-world economy today. The cited evidence does not establish a complete model-by-model ranking or variant-specific MPG figures here, so check the guide and the exact configuration before settling on a candidate. Three-row SUVs
If you need three rows, compare against other three-row vehicles rather than directly ranking them with smaller SUVs. CR’s July 2026 guide says its selected five-year-old three-row SUVs achieved at least 20 mpg in CR’s tests when new and had average-or-better reliability. Confirm the specific year and variant in the guide; the threshold alone does not identify every qualifying model. Read CR’s three-row SUV guide.
Two model-year examples worth investigating
| Model | EPA MPG shown by CR | Reliability information reported by CR | How to use the example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid | 40 mpg | CR says it is more reliable than other 2021 vehicles in its latest subscriber survey. | A compact-hybrid lead to investigate; verify the precise trim and drivetrain, the vehicle’s records, and its recall status. |
| 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid | 35 mpg | CR says it is more reliable than other 2021 vehicles in its latest subscriber survey. | A three-row hybrid lead; confirm that its seating and cargo capacity suit your needs and check the exact vehicle. |
These are model-year page figures, not assurances that every configuration has identical fuel economy or that any specific used example is sound. CR’s pages surface recall references, so look up open recalls for the vehicle’s VIN. 2021 RAV4 Hybrid reliability information and 2021 Highlander Hybrid reliability information.

Compare finalists on the same set of criteria
Once several candidates meet your space and budget needs, compare them in a consistent order:
- Space: Check seating, cargo capacity, and whether the third row is genuinely usable for your passengers.
- Configuration: Record the model year, engine, hybrid status, drivetrain, and trim for each vehicle.
- Fuel economy: Compare the same kind of figure across candidates and confirm it for each configuration.
- Reliability and safety: Review evidence for the exact model year, along with available safety equipment and crash-test information.
- Individual condition: Consider service records, title and vehicle history, open recalls, and an independent inspection.
CR’s ratings framework can help compare reliability, dimensions, cargo, towing, fuel economy, and safety features; its recommended-vehicle standards also draw on testing and reliability data. Consult its used-vehicle ratings.

Check the individual SUV before you buy
Model ratings help you decide what to look at; they cannot establish the condition of the vehicle for sale. Used-SUV purchases carry risk, even when a model has favorable reliability results. CR’s used-SUV buying coverage discusses reliability in the context of used vehicles.
- Confirm the exact model year, trim, engine, drivetrain, and applicable EPA rating.
- Review maintenance records and the vehicle’s title and history.
- Check for open recalls using the VIN.
- Arrange a qualified pre-purchase inspection.
An OBD-II scanner may reveal some stored diagnostic codes, but it cannot establish overall mechanical condition and is not a substitute for a professional inspection.

What this shortlist can—and cannot—tell you
The available evidence is strongest for 2021 compact and subcompact examples and CR’s selected five-year-old three-row SUVs. It does not support a single exhaustive ranking across every model year from 2016 through 2026. Reliability ratings and used inventory change, and recall status is vehicle-specific; verify current model-year information and the VIN before purchase. CR’s 2026 SUV reliability coverage provides broader current context.
