The Lexus IS 500’s 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V-8 is easy to overlook: it sits in a restrained sport sedan rather than a car built around spectacle. But its 472 horsepower, high-rpm character and rear-drive layout make a persuasive case for calling it underrated. That is an enthusiast judgment, not an objective ranking of every engine ever made.
What makes the IS 500’s V-8 distinctive?
Lexus specifies a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 for the IS 500. In its 2021 launch announcement, the company listed 472 hp at 7,100 rpm and 395 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm; its 2025 specifications confirm those same peak output figures. The engine does not rely on turbocharging, and its published peaks arrive at relatively high engine speeds rather than presenting the torque peak as low-rpm muscle. Lexus’s 2021 launch announcement and Lexus’s IS 500 specifications provide the manufacturer’s figures.
That combination is increasingly unusual in a luxury sport sedan. Lexus described the 2025 IS 500 Ultimate Edition as “a celebration of one of the last remaining naturally aspirated luxury V8s on the market.” That is Lexus’s promotional characterization, not an independently verified count of all competing cars. Still, it captures the engine’s appeal: a large-displacement V-8 delivering power without forced induction in a compact, relatively understated sedan. Lexus’s Ultimate Edition announcement makes the claim.
How does the power reach the road?
The IS 500 pairs the V-8 with an eight-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Lexus reported a 0–60 mph time of 4.4 seconds according to AMCI testing in its 2021 launch release. This is Lexus’s report of that test attribution, not a test conducted for this article. The transmission and rear-drive layout matter to the engine’s character. Rather than sending power through an all-wheel-drive system, the IS 500 puts it to the rear wheels through a conventional automatic. That makes the V-8 part of a familiar sport-sedan arrangement, while the engine’s naturally aspirated design gives it a different power-delivery profile from a turbocharged engine. The published torque peak is at 4,800 rpm, so the specification does not support describing it as a low-rpm torque specialist.
It is more than an engine swap
Lexus equipped the IS 500 with chassis and braking hardware intended to support its added performance. The factory package includes Adaptive Variable Suspension, a Torsen limited-slip differential, a Yamaha rear performance damper and two-piece aluminum brake rotors. Those components contribute to how the car manages power and responds on the road; they are reasons to consider the whole performance package, not evidence that the engine alone determines handling. Lexus gave the IS 500 a launch-era curb weight of 3,891 pounds, 143 pounds more than the standard IS 350 F SPORT, according to the same 2021 announcement. That is a manufacturer-provided historical comparison, not a current independent scale measurement. The extra weight helps put the V-8’s output in context: Lexus added a larger engine to an existing sedan platform, rather than creating a purpose-built lightweight sports car.
How does it compare with the IS 350 F SPORT?
The clearest comparison supported by Lexus’s published material is within the IS family. Lexus said the IS 500’s V-8 provided a boost in displacement and performance over the IS 350’s 3.5-liter V-6. The 2021 release quantifies the IS 500’s output at 472 hp and 395 lb.-ft. and gives the 143-pound launch-era weight difference. These figures explain the trade: the IS 500 adds a larger, more powerful engine while carrying more weight than the V-6 model.

This comparison does not establish how the IS 500 stacks up against every rival. The available specifications are not a controlled, cross-brand comparison of model years, test methods, weights or availability, so claims that this engine is categorically superior to competitors would go beyond the evidence.
What the special editions do—and do not—say about rarity
Lexus limited the 2025 IS 500 Ultimate Edition to 500 units in North America. Its separate October 2024 model-year announcement also described a 2025 IS 500 Special Appearance Package limited to 180 units. Those are caps for two distinct special editions, not production totals for all IS 500s. The Ultimate Edition release gives its North American limit, while Lexus’s Special Appearance Package announcement states the 180-unit limit.

The IS itself has a broader history: Lexus said in 2025 that it had sold approximately 1.3 million IS models in more than 40 countries and regions since the model’s 1999 inception. That figure refers to the IS model line, not the IS 500 or its V-8. Lexus’s 2025 announcement provides the model-line context.

“Underrated” is a fair way to describe the gap between the engine’s substance and its modest presentation, provided it is understood as opinion rather than a measurable market verdict. The IS 500 combines a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8, 472-hp output, a rear-wheel-drive layout and factory performance hardware in a sedan that does not make its engine the only thing a passerby notices. Lexus’s own description of the V-8 as among the last remaining naturally aspirated luxury examples underscores its relative rarity, though it does not establish a ranking across the industry.

The case, then, is not that the IS 500’s V-8 has been proven the best engine of its era—or of all time. It is that a high-output, naturally aspirated luxury V-8 remains an unusual and engaging proposition, packaged in a practical sport sedan rather than a conspicuous exotic. That is enough to make it worthy of more attention.
