The truck can drive and pump using battery power, but it is not a battery-only vehicle: its parallel-electric drivetrain also includes a diesel engine for backup and extended incidents.
What Redmond unveiled
The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at Redmond City Hall on Saturday, February 1, 2025. The apparatus is a Pierce Volterra, manufactured by Pierce Manufacturing, an Oshkosh company.

Redmond says the Volterra was the first electric fire engine to enter service in Washington state. That distinction is a claim by the city, rather than the result of an independently audited statewide apparatus registry. The unveiling, arrival, and entry into service should also be distinguished: the ribbon cutting occurred February 1, while Redmond’s public announcement followed on February 3.
It is electric—but not diesel-free
The Volterra is best described as an electric-first fire engine with diesel backup. Its battery system can propel the truck and operate the pump. When the battery is depleted or an incident lasts longer than the electric system can support, the built-in internal-combustion diesel engine can provide power.

Pierce calls the design a parallel-electric platform. That means “electric fire engine” does not mean a truck with no combustion engine or no diesel fuel. It means the vehicle can perform routine travel and firefighting work electrically while retaining a conventional power source for resilience.
Pierce describes battery operation as zero-emission operation. In practical terms, that is a zero-tailpipe-emissions claim while the truck is running electrically—not a claim that manufacturing the battery, producing electricity, maintaining the vehicle, or eventually disposing of the battery creates no emissions.
Range, pumping and charging
According to Redmond, the truck has an electric-only range of approximately 80 miles. The city says a typical Redmond fire engine travels about 25 miles per day, giving the Volterra an electric range that exceeds its normal daily travel estimate.
| Specification or estimate | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| Electric-only range | About 80 miles |
| Range with diesel backup | More than 200 miles before refueling |
| Pump capacity | 2,000 gallons per minute |
| Typical Redmond engine travel | Approximately 25 miles per day |
| Rapid recharge estimate | Less than 15 minutes, according to Redmond |
Redmond says the Volterra can recharge normally in less than 15 minutes. That figure should not be treated as a universal full-charge specification. Pierce says charging time varies with the battery’s state of charge and the station’s infrastructure, and that a full charge may take about an hour in many scenarios. The difference likely reflects different charging conditions and definitions, so departments evaluating the truck would need the charger’s power rating, electrical configuration and operating assumptions.

The pump is rated at 2,000 gallons per minute, the same rating Redmond cites for its other pumper trucks. Pierce says the Volterra can pump at full capacity using battery power alone and can switch to its internal-combustion engine for prolonged operations. Those are city and manufacturer capability claims; the available sources do not provide independent, side-by-side field testing against a diesel pumper under identical emergency conditions.
Where the truck will operate
Redmond assigned the initial Volterra to Fire Station 12 in Overlake. The city was also installing charging infrastructure at Station 11 in downtown Redmond. Washington’s Department of Ecology later reported that Redmond had ordered a second Volterra, with delivery expected in roughly 14 months as of February 2025.
The station arrangement illustrates an important part of electrifying emergency fleets: the vehicle is only one piece of the system. A department must also plan where apparatus will charge, whether the station has sufficient electrical capacity, how readiness is preserved during outages, and how vehicles will be supported during extended or simultaneous incidents.
Why Redmond bought an electric fire engine
Lower diesel use and local air pollution
Redmond estimates that replacing a conventional diesel engine with the Volterra will save approximately 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel annually. The city also estimates that a typical diesel engine emits about 18 metric tons of carbon dioxide and 0.13 metric tons of nitrogen oxides each year.

Those figures describe the city’s estimates, not an independently verified lifecycle comparison. The electric truck can avoid tailpipe emissions during battery operation, but its overall climate impact also depends on electricity generation, battery production, replacement and end-of-life handling—areas not quantified in the cited material.
Reduced exposure for firefighters
Diesel exhaust contains pollutants associated with respiratory and cardiovascular harm, asthma and cancer risks. Washington’s Department of Ecology highlighted reduced diesel-exhaust exposure around the station and at emergency scenes as a reason electric apparatus can matter to firefighters as well as the wider community.
Less noise at the scene
Ecology reported that the electric truck is quiet enough for firefighters to communicate over the engine. That is a direct operational benefit: clearer communication can be valuable around a fireground where pumps, radios, traffic and other apparatus compete for attention.

Redmond’s municipal climate target
The truck forms part of Redmond’s broader green-fleet and charging strategy. The city has set a goal of achieving net-zero emissions from municipal operations by 2030, and an electric-capable emergency vehicle allows it to address a difficult fleet category without giving up a diesel fallback for demanding calls.

What it cost—and what the headline number means
Redmond says a traditional diesel fire engine costs nearly $1 million. The Volterra and its charging infrastructure were originally priced at $2.4 million. After grants and donations, the city says its final cost was $264,600.
That $264,600 is Redmond’s net municipal outlay after outside support, not the truck’s ordinary market price. The reported $2.4 million figure also includes charging infrastructure, while the diesel comparison is presented as the cost of a conventional engine. The funding came from the Washington Department of Ecology, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Puget Sound Energy, Amazon, Microsoft and other community partners, according to the city’s official release.
The available sources do not provide a complete total-cost-of-ownership analysis. That means there is not enough evidence to say the Volterra is cheaper than a diesel pumper over its service life. Fuel savings, maintenance, battery replacement, charging upgrades and training would all affect that calculation.
What changes for emergency readiness?
The diesel backup addresses one of the central concerns about electric emergency vehicles: a fire engine cannot simply stop being useful because an incident lasts longer than expected. The Volterra can use battery power for routine response and pumping, then rely on its combustion engine when extended range or pumping duration requires it.

That does not eliminate planning requirements. A department considering an electric apparatus would need to evaluate:
- Daily run volume, response distances and mutual-aid assignments.
- Electrical service and charging capacity at each station.
- Readiness during power outages or charger failures.
- Charging after a high-demand incident.
- Multiple-alarm fires, wildfire deployments and simultaneous apparatus use.
- Cold-weather performance and thermal management.
- Recovery and towing procedures after a collision.
- Procedures for a damaged high-voltage battery.
Pierce says the Volterra includes thermal-management systems for cold-weather operation and retains internal-combustion backup. Those are manufacturer statements, not independent Redmond field results. The public information cited here also does not specify the charger’s power, electrical upgrades, charging standard, outage backup, or whether the truck can pump while connected to a charger.
Training and maintenance
Ecology reported that Redmond designed the vehicle to resemble its diesel engines and expected additional training to focus mainly on operating the electric motor. That suggests the apparatus is intended to fit into familiar fireground practices rather than require an entirely different vehicle concept.
However, “limited additional training” does not mean “no special training.” Fire departments adopting high-voltage vehicles still need clear procedures for electrical isolation, charging-station safety, crash response, battery damage, emergency towing and maintenance. The sources do not describe Redmond’s detailed training curriculum or its procedures for a battery incident.
What Redmond’s purchase proves—and what it does not
Redmond’s Volterra demonstrates that an electric-capable pumper can be deployed without abandoning diesel backup. It also shows why the most useful evaluation is broader than a range number. The relevant questions include whether routine calls can be handled electrically, whether firefighters experience less exhaust and noise, whether charging keeps the truck ready, and how the apparatus performs during prolonged incidents.
The purchase does not yet establish that electric fire engines outperform diesel engines in every emergency condition. Nor does it establish zero lifecycle emissions, lower total ownership cost, or universal suitability for departments with different station layouts, call volumes, climates and mutual-aid obligations.
For Redmond, the practical proposition is straightforward: use battery power whenever the mission allows, retain diesel capability when emergency operations demand it, and reduce routine fuel use and exhaust exposure in the process. The longer-term test will be whether that compromise delivers reliable readiness while producing the operational and emissions benefits the city expects.
