Range Rover Sport Fuel Economy: What Affects Real-World Consumption?

Range Rover Sport fuel economy depends on far more than the badge. Here is how WLTP figures, PHEV charge state, driving, weather, load, wheels and accessories shape real-world consumption.

There is no single fuel-economy number for every Range Rover Sport. The meaningful figure depends on the model year, market, powertrain, exact variant, wheels and equipment, and—on a plug-in hybrid (PHEV)—how often the battery is charged and how much of each journey is electric. Land Rover says its published results are standardized comparison figures and warns that “Real-world figures may differ.”

Why one Range Rover Sport mpg figure can mislead

Fuel economy is not a fixed characteristic shared by every vehicle wearing the Range Rover Sport name. A petrol V8, a PHEV and another market’s specification can produce very different results. Even two otherwise similar vehicles can use different amounts of fuel when driven on different routes, with different loads, wheels, accessories or weather.

The first check is therefore not the number itself but its context. Record the model year and market, the engine or hybrid system, the precise variant, the test cycle and the units. If the vehicle is a PHEV, also establish whether the quoted result assumes a charged battery and how electric driving is included. Without those details, “Range Rover Sport fuel economy” is an incomplete comparison.

Variant WLTP combined petrol consumption Displayed mpg range Usable battery WLTP combined electric range Published expected real-world electric range
Range Rover Sport P460e 2.7–3.1 L/100 km 105.4–90.0 mpg 31.8 kWh 118 km (73 miles) Up to 96 km (60 miles)
Range Rover Sport P550e 2.7–3.1 L/100 km 102.7–90.2 mpg 31.8 kWh 116 km (72 miles) Up to 94 km (59 miles)

These are manufacturer-published WLTP specification values. Land Rover states that the fuel-consumption figures are based on a fully charged battery and are intended for comparison; real-world results may differ. The electric-range numbers are also published specification values, not independent owner-test averages.

A low combined petrol number in a PHEV table does not mean the engine will always achieve that rate after the battery is depleted. The test includes electric driving from a charged battery. A driver who charges regularly and covers short daily trips electrically may use very little petrol, while a driver who rarely charges or undertakes long high-speed journeys will rely more on the engine.

The real-world factors Land Rover identifies

Driving style

Acceleration, speed, braking and anticipation all influence consumption, and Land Rover lists driving style as a variable. Smooth inputs and anticipation can reduce unnecessary energy use; repeated hard acceleration and high speeds generally demand more power. The published specification does not assign a fixed mpg penalty to a particular habit, so no precise percentage should be attached to your driving style without separate testing.

Environment and route

Environmental conditions and the actual route are also named variables. A standardized WLTP cycle cannot reproduce every owner’s combination of traffic, gradients, motorway speeds, stop-start sections and ambient conditions. Cold weather, strong wind, standing water or steep terrain can change the energy required for the same distance. Treat a dashboard result from one route as a record of that trip, not a universal rating.

Vehicle load

Passengers, luggage and other carried weight affect the work the vehicle must do, particularly when accelerating or climbing. Land Rover specifically identifies vehicle load as a source of variation. The specification does not quantify a consumption change for a given number of occupants or a particular luggage weight, so use the published figure as a comparison baseline rather than a load-adjusted promise.

Wheels and tyres

Wheel fitment is explicitly listed as a factor. Different wheel and tyre specifications can alter rolling resistance, aerodynamic drag and mass. The technical sheet does not state how many litres per 100 kilometres or mpg are gained or lost for each wheel size. Compare vehicles only when their wheel and tyre configurations are known, and avoid treating a result from one fitment as representative of every version.

Accessories

Fitted accessories can also affect consumption. External additions may change aerodynamic drag, while added equipment increases mass. Land Rover names accessories but does not publish a per-accessory adjustment in the cited specification. A roof-mounted item, towing equipment or other permanent addition should therefore be considered a possible influence, not assigned an invented correction factor.

Battery condition and electric use in a PHEV

For the P460e and P550e, battery condition and the route’s electric portion are central to interpreting petrol consumption. The official test starts with a fully charged battery. Your trip may begin at a high state of charge, a low state of charge or somewhere in between, and the vehicle may use electric energy for some sections before the engine operates more frequently.

Two identical PHEVs can consequently show very different petrol figures over a week. One may be charged every night and complete most commuting electrically; another may be used for long journeys with infrequent charging. Report petrol use together with charging frequency and electric miles or kilometres rather than presenting a single petrol number in isolation.

How to compare two Range Rover Sport economy figures correctly

Use the following checklist before deciding that one result is better or worse than another:

Comparison item What to establish Why it matters
Model year and market Production year and the country or regulatory market Specifications, equipment and test reporting can change between years and regions.
Powertrain and variant Engine type, hybrid system and exact designation such as P460e, P550e or P530 Different powertrains are not interchangeable fuel-economy references.
Test cycle and units WLTP or another cycle, plus L/100 km, US mpg or imperial mpg The cycles and unit systems are not directly interchangeable without conversion and context.
PHEV test condition Whether the battery was fully charged and how electric driving was counted A charged battery can substantially reduce petrol use during the measured journey.
Wheels and accessories Wheel and tyre fitment and notable equipment attached to the vehicle Fitment and drag can change energy demand.
Load, route and conditions Occupants, luggage, traffic, speed, gradients and weather A laboratory cycle cannot represent every real trip.

If any of these fields is missing, describe the comparison as limited rather than ranking the vehicles with false precision.

Reading WLTP numbers without treating them as promises

WLTP is a standardized test intended to make vehicles comparable under controlled conditions. It is not an owner-average survey and it does not predict the exact result for your commute. Land Rover’s wording is explicit: official figures are for comparison, and real-world figures may differ.

Keep the units supplied for your market when quoting a result. The 2025 PHEV sheet gives both L/100 km and displayed mpg ranges. Do not collapse 2.7–3.1 L/100 km into one exact value, and do not present the mpg band as a guaranteed everyday outcome. A range communicates that the tested result varies by specification and configuration.

Also distinguish petrol consumption from electric range. The P460e’s stated 118 km (73 miles) WLTP electric range and “up to” 96 km (60 miles) expected real-world electric range are separate measures. They do not mean that every journey will deliver 96 miles or kilometres, nor do they convert directly into a petrol-mpg promise.

A historical petrol figure illustrates why model year matters

An older 2022 official technical insert gives the P530 V8 a WLTP combined consumption of 11.2–11.7 L/100 km, shown as 25.2–24.1 mpg. That document describes a petrol V8 from an earlier model-year context; it is not a like-for-like comparison with the 2025 PHEV figures above. It is useful only as an example of how dramatically powertrain and model year change the headline number.

The original insert is available at Land Rover’s Range Rover Sport WLTP technical PDF. Check the vehicle’s own market specification before applying any historical figure to a current car.

How to measure your own consumption

For a useful owner record, make the measurement repeatable instead of relying on one unusually easy or difficult journey.

  1. Identify the vehicle. Write down model year, market, exact variant, powertrain, wheel and tyre specification, and any major accessories.
  2. Choose a measurement period. A full tank-to-tank interval or a clearly defined set of charging cycles is more informative than one short trip.
  3. Record the starting state. For a PHEV, note battery state of charge and whether the battery was charged from the mains before departure.
  4. Log distance and energy. Record fuel added, electricity charged where available, total distance, electric distance if the vehicle reports it, passengers and luggage.
  5. Describe the route. Separate urban, rural and motorway use when possible, and note unusual weather, traffic, towing or steep terrain.
  6. Repeat under similar conditions. Several comparable intervals reveal a pattern; one result cannot establish a general average.

This process still will not produce a laboratory-equivalent figure, but it lets you compare your own usage over time and explains why two drivers can report different results without either vehicle being faulty.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Mixing powertrains: Do not apply a PHEV figure to a petrol or diesel model, or use an older V8 result to describe a current hybrid.
  • Mixing markets or mpg systems: Confirm whether a quoted mpg value is the market’s displayed unit and retain the L/100 km figure when possible.
  • Ignoring charge state: A PHEV result made with a full battery cannot be compared fairly with a trip that began nearly empty.
  • Calling a WLTP result an owner average: The published numbers are manufacturer test figures, not a named independent survey.
  • Inventing a wheel-size penalty: Wheel fitment is relevant, but the cited specifications do not quantify a fixed change for each size.
  • Using one trip as proof: Route, weather, load and driving style can make a single tank or journey atypical.

What can—and cannot—be estimated from the published data

The specifications support a clear explanation of the variables, but they do not provide a verified per-factor adjustment, an independent owner-reported average or a complete same-market comparison for every current engine. It is therefore not responsible to calculate that a certain wheel, speed, accessory or driving habit will reduce economy by a stated percentage from these figures alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A responsible estimate for a particular owner would require, at minimum, the model year, exact engine or variant, market, wheel and accessory configuration, route mix, driving pattern, load and—on a PHEV—charging frequency and battery condition. Without those details, the most accurate answer remains a qualified range tied to the correct official test result, not a single personalized promise.
