Use the figure published for the vehicle’s own market rather than treating the one-unit difference as a universal specification. The European announcement and the Middle East announcement specify their respective market figures.

What are the downsides, especially for fuel economy?
Fuel use can be a meaningful cost
A useful historical example is the 2018 Dodge Durango with the 5.7-liter HEMI: Dodge listed 14 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined for both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. Those are ratings for that model year and vehicle, not a fuel-economy estimate for a 2026 Ram 1500 or for every HEMI. Dodge’s 2018 Durango specifications identify the vehicle and ratings.

For the 2026 Ram 1500 European powertrain comparison, Stellantis lists the HEMI at 16 l/100 km and 362 g/km CO₂, versus 13.1 l/100 km and 311 g/km for the 3.0-liter Hurricane standard-output engine. These are manufacturer figures for that market comparison; they should not be mixed with the older Durango mpg ratings as though they share a test cycle or vehicle. In the same European comparison, Stellantis lists the standard-output Hurricane at 420 hp and 636 Nm, above the HEMI’s 395 hp and 556 Nm. The company describes the Hurricane as more powerful and more efficient. This is a comparison of those listed 2026 Ram 1500 powertrains in that market, not a claim about every Hurricane or HEMI application. Ram’s comparison table gives the figures.
Availability and ownership details vary
HEMI trim availability differs by region, so check the local model-year lineup rather than assuming a 2026 truck offered in one market is available in another. Fuel-grade advice also needs to come from the correct owner documentation: for example, a 2018 Ram 2500 6.4-liter sheet recommends 89 octane while accepting 87, but that does not establish the requirement for a modern 5.7-liter HEMI or any other application. Consult the manual and specifications for the exact vehicle.

Ram’s 2026 Middle East maximums apply to that regional lineup and do not tell you the rating of every truck. Verify the specific truck’s configuration and tow rating, then compare payload as well: passengers, cargo, and trailer load all matter to the vehicle’s limits. The announcement’s figures are useful context, not a substitute for the rating of the build you are considering.

Is the HEMI better than the Hurricane?
“Better” depends on what matters to you. In the cited 2026 European comparison, the Hurricane standard-output six has higher listed horsepower and torque, and lower listed fuel consumption and CO₂. The HEMI offers the V-8 character Ram says customers requested. The published comparison does not establish purchase-price differences, equivalent ratings for every market, or long-term repair and ownership costs.

For a fair decision, compare the same model year, market, and vehicle configuration. Check:
- Horsepower and torque for the exact engines offered.
- Fuel consumption measured under the same local test cycle.
- CO₂ or emissions figures on a like-for-like basis.
- Towing and payload ratings for the exact build.
- Required fuel grade and scheduled maintenance in that vehicle’s owner documentation.
- Purchase price and verified ownership or repair information.
