Ford’s U.S. SUV and crossover lineup includes six nameplates: Escape, Bronco Sport, Mustang Mach-E, Explorer, Bronco and Expedition. The right one depends first on how much space and capability you need—and whether you want a conventional crossover, an off-road-oriented vehicle or an all-electric model. This guide reflects Ford’s lineup and 2026 Explorer specifications as of October 4, 2026; model years, trims, prices and availability can differ across Ford’s live showroom, so confirm the details for the vehicle you’re considering.
Which Ford SUV fits your needs?
Use this as a starting point, not a ranked test: Ford’s showroom identifies the six vehicles, but the information available here does not provide comparable specifications for all of them. Ford’s SUV and crossover showroom is the place to confirm current listings and shop by model.
| Model | Best starting point for | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Escape | Conventional compact-crossover shopping | Current powertrain, seating, cargo space, drive options and trim pricing |
| Bronco Sport | A smaller crossover with an adventure-oriented focus | Available off-road equipment, drive system, cargo needs and current trims |
| Mustang Mach-E | Shopping for an all-electric crossover | Current range and charging details, trim, cargo space and drive configuration |
| Explorer | Three-row family use | Seating layout, cargo space behind the row you’ll use and exact towing setup |
| Bronco | Prioritizing off-road capability | Trim-specific equipment, passenger and cargo needs, and towing configuration |
| Expedition | Needing a larger, full-size SUV | Current seating, cargo, powertrain, towing and price by configuration |
The role descriptions are orientation, not proof that one vehicle outperforms another. Compare the same kinds of figures—on the same model year and comparable configurations—before choosing.
Which Ford SUV is best for a family?
Start with passenger access and usable cargo space, not just the advertised seat count. If your household needs a third row, the Explorer is a clearly documented option: Ford says every 2026 Explorer has third-row seating and accommodates six or seven, depending on second-row configuration. The Expedition is the larger full-size option in Ford’s lineup, but confirm its current seating and cargo figures on its model page rather than assuming they match the Explorer’s.

- Brand new box. Real rubber tires. True-to-scale detail. Has opening front doors. Detailed interior, exterior. Officially licensed product. Manufacturer's original unopened packaging. Made of diecast metal with some plastic parts. Dimensions approximately L-8, W-3.75, H-3 inches.
For any family vehicle, check whether the second row uses captain’s chairs or a bench, how children or other passengers will reach the third row, and how much luggage fits with all the seats you need in use. The Explorer’s 16.3 cu ft behind the third row is a useful example of why maximum cargo volume alone can be misleading.
What do the 2026 Ford Explorer specifications show?
Ford lists six 2026 Explorer trims: Active 100A, Active, ST-Line, Tremor, Platinum and ST. Its product page reports a 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder for multiple trims and a 3.0L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 for Tremor and ST. Drivetrain availability varies: some configurations offer rear-wheel drive with available Intelligent 4WD, while Tremor has standard Intelligent 4WD. Check Ford’s 2026 Explorer page for the specification tied to a particular trim.

| 2026 Explorer figure | Ford’s published specification |
|---|---|
| Seating | Six or seven, depending on configuration |
| Cargo behind third row | 16.3 cu ft |
| Maximum cargo volume | 85.8 cu ft on Active 100A, Active and ST-Line; 85.3 cu ft on other listed models |
| Maximum trailer towing | 5,000 lb for both listed engines; exact vehicle setup and towing guidance still matter |
These are Ford’s figures for the 2026 Explorer, not specifications for every Ford SUV. Cargo volume and towing limits should not be carried over to another model or assumed to apply identically to every configuration.
Which Ford SUV is best for off-roading?
Bronco is the lineup’s clearest starting point if off-road capability is the priority; Bronco Sport is the smaller adventure-oriented crossover. That distinction identifies where to begin shopping, not a measured capability ranking. Compare the specific trims and equipment Ford offers for the model year you want, including drive system and off-road hardware, and match those features to the terrain you expect to drive.

How much can a Ford SUV tow?
There is no single towing figure for the whole lineup. Ford publishes a maximum trailer-towing capacity of 5,000 lb for the 2026 Explorer, and says every 2026 Explorer includes a Class III Tow Package with a hitch receiver, seven-wire harness, and four- and seven-pin trailer connectors. That Explorer figure is not a rating for Escape, Bronco Sport, Mustang Mach-E, Bronco or Expedition. Confirm the selected vehicle’s model-specific rating and setup in Ford’s towing guides and owner’s manual.
Trailer towing is different from flat towing a vehicle behind a motorhome. Ford’s 2026 towing-guide information says procedures and restrictions vary by vehicle; consult the manual or a Ford dealer for the complete requirements before attempting either method.

What to compare before choosing
Once you have narrowed the list by vehicle role and size, compare the exact model year and trim on Ford’s current pages. A useful checklist:
- Passenger layout: Number of rows, seat configuration and access to the rear seats.
- Cargo: Space with the seats you will actually use in place, as well as maximum cargo volume.
- Powertrain and drive: Gasoline, hybrid or electric availability where offered, plus front-, rear-, all- or four-wheel-drive options for the specific trim.
- Capability: Off-road equipment and model-specific maximum trailer rating, including any required package or configuration.
- Ownership and price: Warranty, running costs and current trim-level pricing for your market.
Ford’s showroom can show different model years within the same lineup, and listed prices and availability are live details rather than durable rankings. Confirm the current model year, trim, specifications and dealer inventory for the exact vehicle before making a decision or requesting a quote.
