Use the octane grade specified on your vehicle’s fuel-door label or in its owner’s manual. If premium is required, use it. If premium is only recommended, weigh any possible benefit for that specific vehicle against the extra cost. For a car or SUV designed for regular, premium is not a general-purpose upgrade.
What premium and regular mean
Have you ever stood at the gas pump and wondered which kind of fuel you should use? The key distinction is octane: it indicates gasoline’s resistance to engine knock, not a general measure of fuel quality or a guarantee of more power. The Federal Trade Commission explains that the posted automotive gasoline rating is the average of the research octane number and motor octane number. The pump label shows the minimum octane rating. FTC guidance on gasoline fuel ratings
In the United States, regular is commonly 87 AKI, but midgrade and premium ratings vary by market and station. Grade names are not universal numerical specifications, so check the pump label and your vehicle’s instructions. The Energy Information Administration describes octane as gasoline’s antiknock property and notes that the manufacturer specifies the appropriate grade for each vehicle. EIA explanation of gasoline octane
How to find the right grade for your vehicle
- Check the fuel-door label. It may specify a minimum octane rating or say that premium is required or recommended.
- Confirm in the owner’s manual. Match the instruction to your exact model, engine, model year, and market; fuel specifications can differ across versions of the same vehicle.
- Check fuel-content limits separately. The correct octane grade does not establish that every ethanol blend or other fuel component is acceptable. Follow any additional restrictions in the manual.
If the label and manual seem to differ, verify the instruction for your exact vehicle with its manufacturer or dealer rather than assuming that a higher octane resolves a compatibility question.

Required premium is different from recommended premium
Premium required
If the manufacturer requires premium, use at least the specified grade. Do not treat a lower grade as equivalent simply because the engine runs, or assume premium can be replaced with an additive.
Premium recommended
A recommendation means the manufacturer identifies premium as the preferred fuel, but the decision may involve a trade-off between possible vehicle-specific performance or fuel-economy benefits and the price difference. AAA advises considering your driving habits, potential benefits, and cost; results are not the same for every driver or model. If a premium-recommended vehicle pings or knocks on regular, AAA says higher octane may resolve it, but the vehicle should also be checked by a reputable repair shop. Regular specified
Do not buy premium automatically for a vehicle designed for regular. AAA reports no quantitative horsepower or fuel-economy benefit from premium in vehicles designed to run on regular gasoline. AAA Phase II gasoline report
What AAA’s premium-fuel test does—and does not—show
In a 2017 test, AAA compared 87-octane regular with 93-octane premium in six premium-recommended vehicle models; both test fuels contained 10% ethanol. AAA reported that premium-recommended vehicles may see some fuel-economy or horsepower benefit, but the test covered only those six models. It is evidence about that tested group, not a promise that every premium-recommended car or SUV will improve, or that any improvement will offset the local price difference. Check ethanol and other fuel restrictions
Octane and ethanol content answer different questions. A 2026 Hyundai owner’s manual, for example, specifies at least 87 AKI and warns against gasohol with more than 15% ethanol and fuel containing methanol. Those are instructions for the specified Hyundai vehicle, not a universal rule for every car or SUV. Follow your own manual’s limits. 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe owner’s manual

Gasoline formulations can vary by location and season, according to the EIA. Ethanol is commonly blended into U.S. gasoline, and the EPA notes that ethanol has lower energy density than gasoline. Higher octane does not automatically mean stronger detergent additives. AAA recommends TOP TIER gasoline for drivers seeking enhanced detergent standards. Its consumer guidance reports that previous research found 19 times fewer engine deposits with TOP TIER gasoline than with non-TOP TIER fuel; this is AAA’s reported finding, not a new independent comparison.
