Usually not—unless your vehicle requires or recommends premium. If the owner’s manual specifies regular gasoline, premium is not a general-purpose upgrade for more power or better mileage. If premium is required, use it. If it is recommended but not required, weigh your vehicle’s instructions and how you drive against the current local price difference.
What premium gasoline actually changes
Premium’s higher octane rating means it resists auto-ignition under pressure better than lower-octane fuel. That resistance can help prevent engine knock in engines designed to need it. Octane is not a universal measure of fuel quality, energy content, or detergent level. In the United States, regular is generally rated 87, midgrade 89–90, and premium 91–94; the large number on the pump is the minimum octane rating under the (R+M)/2 method. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains octane and knock.
Should you buy premium for your vehicle?
If the manufacturer specifies regular
Use the grade specified in the owner’s manual. AAA testing found no significant improvement in horsepower, fuel economy, or emissions from using premium in vehicles designed for regular gasoline. Paying extra for premium in this case is not a demonstrated way to make the car run better.
If premium is recommended, but not required
This is a vehicle-specific choice, not a blanket instruction to use premium. AAA’s tests found that some premium-recommended vehicles could show modest fuel-economy or horsepower gains under simulated demanding conditions, such as heavy acceleration or load. The benefit was smaller in typical driving, varied by model, and cannot be assumed for every car. Check the manual for the permitted alternative and any stated trade-off, then compare today’s local prices.

If premium is required
Use premium as directed by the manufacturer. AAA’s research report warns that failing to use the required grade can risk engine damage. Check the exact engine and trim in your owner’s manual and the label inside the fuel door; do not rely on a model name alone.
The distinction matters across the market. The U.S. Department of Energy reported that for model-year 2023, 26.7% of light-duty vehicle configurations required premium and 26.3% recommended it without requiring it. These are shares of vehicle configurations in the DOE/EPA data, not shares of drivers or vehicles currently on the road. DOE’s July 29, 2024 Fact of the Week provides the figures and their context.

What AAA’s tests do—and do not—show
AAA’s Phase II work tested six vehicles for which premium was recommended, using 87-octane regular and 93-octane premium gasoline, both with 10% ethanol. In simulated demanding conditions, AAA reported an average fuel-economy improvement of 2.7% and a horsepower increase of 1.4%. Individual results varied substantially: fuel economy ranged from a 1% decrease in a 2016 Audi A3 to a 7.1% increase in a 2016 Cadillac Escalade; horsepower ranged from a 0.3% decrease in a 2016 Jeep Renegade to a 3.2% increase in a 2017 Ford Mustang. These are results from that small, controlled test group, not predictions for a particular current vehicle. AAA’s Phase II fact sheet describes the test setup.
AAA’s December 12, 2017 announcement cited a national regular-to-premium price gap of about 20–25%, or roughly 50 cents per gallon at that time. AAA concluded that the tested fuel-economy gains did not offset that historical price premium. That price comparison is not a current pump-price quote; whether an optional upgrade makes sense now depends on the gap where you buy fuel. AAA’s announcement reports the dated test and price results. AAA’s current research summary also distinguishes regular-designed vehicles from those that recommend premium. How to decide when premium is optional
- Check the exact vehicle instructions. Read the owner’s manual and fuel-door label for your engine and trim. Identify whether premium is required, recommended, or whether regular is specified.
- Consider your normal use. Routine commuting is different from frequent towing, hauling, or hard acceleration. AAA’s findings suggest more potential for a modest benefit under demanding conditions, but do not establish what your specific vehicle will gain.
- Compare today’s local prices. If the manual permits regular, compare the added cost with any vehicle-specific benefit you can establish; do not use AAA’s 2017 price gap as today’s rate.
- Keep symptoms separate from the fuel choice. If the engine pings or knocks, consult the manual and have it checked by a reputable repair shop, particularly if it happens under load. A fuel-grade change may not address the cause.
Premium octane is not the same as detergent quality
Higher octane does not automatically mean cleaner fuel or more detergent. If your concern is fuel detergent quality, treat that as a separate choice: AAA identifies TOP TIER gasoline as a fuel-quality consideration rather than recommending premium octane as a proxy for cleanliness. AAA explains its guidance on TOP TIER gasoline.
