The best Porsche 928 to buy is the soundest one with verifiable maintenance—not necessarily the newest, rarest, or cheapest. Before agreeing on a price, confirm the car’s exact year and specification, review major-service records, and arrange an inspection with a workshop experienced with the 928. Deferred belt service, corrosion, drivetrain faults, and electrical problems can quickly outweigh an attractive asking price.

What makes the Porsche 928 different?

Porsche lists the 928 as a classic model produced from 1978 to 1995. It is a front-engine V8 grand tourer with a rear-mounted transmission connected to the engine by a torque tube. That transaxle layout was part of the car’s balance and handling concept. Engine displacement grew from 4.5 litres in the original cars to 5.4 litres in the GTS. Porsche’s model history describes the 928 as its longest-running transaxle model (Porsche Classic: 928).

Hagerty reports that nearly 61,000 cars were built across the 17-year production run. Its account describes the early 4.5-litre V8 as producing 219 hp and 254 lb-ft, and the 1993 GTS’s 5.4-litre engine as rated at 345 hp; those figures apply to the specific configurations described, not every 928 (Hagerty’s 928 history).

Which 928 should you consider?

Choose by condition, documentation, and intended use before treating a particular year or gearbox as the answer. The model changed substantially over its production life, and specifications could differ by market. Confirm the actual model, engine, options, and market version from the car’s identification numbers and records rather than relying on a seller’s description.

Understand the model-year changes

Classic & Sports Car’s UK-oriented chronology notes the 1986 S4 update, the GT’s introduction in 1989, and the GTS replacing the S4 and GT in 1991. Body, engine, braking, suspension, and transmission details changed over time; do not assume a chronology or specification for one market applies unchanged elsewhere (Classic & Sports Car’s buyer’s guide).

Choose a gearbox for the car, not the badge

Manual and automatic versions are represented in the model range, with later changes to gearbox and clutch details. A manual may suit your preference or influence collector interest, but it is not a substitute for a sound car and documented service. Assess how the transmission behaves on a drive and have any noise, vibration, or poor operation investigated.

Weigh originality and provenance

Check that the VIN, engine, option codes, ownership history, and service records make sense together. Ask about repainting, accident repairs, modifications, and engine or transmission swaps. Repairs are not automatically disqualifying, but their quality, documentation, and effect on originality should be reflected in your decision and price.

What to inspect before buying

Arrange a pre-purchase inspection with a workshop familiar with the 928. A short viewing cannot establish the condition of the timing drive, underside, drivetrain, or heat-sensitive systems. Ask the seller to leave the engine cold before the appointment, and agree in advance whether the inspector can perform diagnostics and compression or leak-down testing.

Major service: timing belt and water pump

Request dated invoices for the timing-belt and water-pump work, including tensioners where applicable. If the records do not establish when the service was done, treat it as due until a specialist confirms the requirement for that exact year and market. One buyer’s guide gives a four-year or 60,000-mile interval; verify the interval and required parts against the car’s specification and current specialist advice rather than applying that figure universally.

Engine and cooling system

  • Look for oil leaks, exhaust smoke, abnormal oil use, and signs of previous repairs.
  • Check coolant condition and inspect the radiator, hoses, and surrounding areas for leaks or evidence of overheating. A cooling-system pressure test and service records can help identify problems.
  • Ask the inspector to investigate any sign of oil and coolant mixing. A buyer’s guide specifically flags this concern on 1986–1989 S4s; confirm whether it applies to the candidate’s exact engine and market specification.
  • On later cars, have age-related electronic fuel-injection and ignition issues assessed rather than assuming that an intermittent fault is minor.

Torque tube, transaxle, and mounts

During the road test, pay attention to vibration under load, clunks or shunt as the throttle is applied or lifted, and noise from the transaxle. Ask the specialist to inspect the torque tube and mounts; symptoms alone do not identify which component is at fault.

Body, underside, and repair quality

Inspect the car on a lift if possible. Prioritize the sills, floors, jacking points, rear arches, battery and fuel-filler areas, subframes, and mountings. The body uses a mix of materials, and corrosion or poor repairs can be difficult to assess from a clean exterior. Check repair documentation and the condition of both visible panels and structural areas.

A paint-thickness gauge can help flag paintwork that differs across panels, but it cannot certify originality or establish structural integrity. Treat readings as one clue alongside the car’s history and an experienced inspection.

Electrical systems and cabin equipment

Test every gauge, warning light, switch, motor, pop-up headlight, heater, and climate-control function. Age and neglect can produce intermittent faults, so check equipment more than once and note anything that works inconsistently. Have the inspector diagnose faults rather than assuming that a switch or motor is the only cause.

Suspension, brakes, wheels, and tires

Ask for checks of bushes, bearings, dampers, and brakes, as well as wheel fitment and tire condition. Low mileage does not make old rubber parts or aged tires sound; inspect their age and condition, not just tread depth.

Make the road test long enough to matter

Include a cold start and a sufficiently long drive to bring the car up to temperature. The inspector should assess starting and running behavior, transmission operation, handling, braking, gauges, and warning lights, and watch for faults that appear only when hot. If the seller will not permit a meaningful inspection or road test, factor that risk into the decision rather than treating the absence of evidence as proof of condition.

Which documents should you request?

  • Service book and dated invoices: Look for evidence of routine maintenance and major work, particularly timing-belt-related service.
  • Pre-purchase or repair findings: Review prior inspection reports and invoices for unresolved issues or recurring repairs.
  • Identity and specification records: Match the VIN and available engine and option-code information to the car being offered.
  • Ownership and repair history: Ask for records of owners, paintwork, accident repairs, modifications, and component swaps.
  • Market-specific paperwork: Check that the car’s stated specification and documentation correspond to its original market and any later changes.

Missing paperwork does not by itself prove a car is bad, but it leaves important claims unverified. Price and plan accordingly, and do not treat a seller’s verbal assurance as a substitute for records or inspection.

How should you compare asking prices?

Compare cars with similar year, variant, condition, originality, geography, and sale venue. Separate asking prices from completed sales, and remember that an individual auction result is evidence of one transaction—not a general valuation or a guarantee of what another car should cost.

Reported transaction Sale date and venue Reported result How to interpret it
1989 928 GT, manual June 14, 2025; venue not stated in the cited guide $72,500 One reported sale; compare only with similar cars and market context.
1990 928 S4, manual May 24, 2025; venue not stated in the cited guide £38,250 One reported sale in a different currency and market context.
1993 928 GTS February 4, 2025; RM Sotheby’s Paris €126,500 One reported auction result, not a range for all GTS examples.

These results are listed by Car Collector International. They are dated transactions in different currencies and venues, not current appraisals. Verify the underlying auction record before using a result to negotiate. Classic & Sports Car’s guide also includes restoration, average, and show-price figures, but says those figures were correct at its original publication date; they should not be treated as current prices without a fresh, dated check.

Can you get parts and specialist support?

Porsche Classic includes the 928 in its supported model range and describes genuine parts and specialist services for classic models. That establishes a support channel, not guaranteed local access, stock, lead times, or availability of every model-specific component. Check with a Porsche Classic Partner or 928 specialist about the exact parts and work a candidate needs before buying it.

Car Collector International reports that mechanical parts supply remains broadly good, while some model-specific trim, wiring looms, and late GTS items can be harder and more expensive to source. Treat that as a buyer-guide observation, not a guarantee about current stock; confirm availability for the individual car.

When is a 928 the right purchase?

A 928 makes sense for a buyer who values a V8 grand tourer and is prepared to judge a decades-old car on evidence, not just appearance or a low price. Favor a documented example that passes a specialist inspection. If a car needs major service, has unresolved structural or drivetrain questions, or lacks records, establish the likely work and parts availability before making an offer.
