For a 2004–2006 Pontiac GTO, the right response to an engine symptom depends on the car’s model year, engine, and test results—not a list of supposed common failures. The available service sources cover a 2004 5.7L V8 and later 6.0L V8 applications; confirm the year and engine using the VIN and underhood label before choosing parts or following a procedure. A misfire code, oil loss, or bulletin entry is a reason to investigate, not proof of a specific failed part.
What engine problems are documented for the Pontiac GTO?
GM service-information indexes list topics relevant to GTO engine diagnosis, including oil consumption, rear-cover oil leaks, ignition service, intake-manifold inspection or replacement, and catalytic-converter damage associated with misfire codes. An index entry shows that service information exists; it does not establish that the condition is widespread or that it explains a particular car’s symptoms. The available sources do not establish population failure rates, mileage thresholds, or typical repair costs.

The model-year distinction matters. The indexed service material identifies the 2004 GTO as a 5.7L V8 application, while later material covers a 6.0L V8. Verify the vehicle’s engine and use year-correct service information before ordering components or attempting repairs. 2004 GTO 5.7L service information

Retrieve diagnostic trouble codes and record when the symptom occurs before replacing parts. A code can narrow the investigation, but it does not by itself identify a failed coil, spark plug, injector, sensor, or internal engine part.

Use codes and cylinder counters as diagnostic leads
GM’s misfire-monitor description says the PCM evaluates crankshaft-speed variation using crankshaft- and camshaft-position signals. Scan-tool misfire-counter data can help identify affected cylinders and point toward shared circuits or components. The same service description notes that rough roads can create torque variation and temporarily trigger a false misfire indication. A scan tool should support live data and the needed misfire counters; check its stated GTO model-year coverage before relying on it.
For the applicable 2004 5.7L procedure, see Operation CHARM’s Misfire Monitor Diagnostic Operation.

Know when to stop driving
A flashing warning light with an active misfire, severe shaking, unusual mechanical noise, or a loss-of-oil-pressure warning calls for prompt professional diagnosis. Avoid hard driving while the issue is unresolved: continued misfire can damage emissions hardware, and an oil-pressure warning warrants immediate attention. None of these symptoms alone proves internal engine damage.

What to check if a GTO is burning oil or losing oil
First check the actual oil level and how quickly it changes. Inspect for visible external leaks, including the rear-cover area, and have a technician follow the correct service procedure before concluding that oil is being consumed internally. GM’s 2004 bulletin index includes an oil-consumption guideline and a rear-cover oil-leak topic; these are inspection leads, not proof of a defect in every car. 2004 GTO technical service bulletin index

- FITMENT--This Radiator For Pontiac GTO Base Coupe 2-Door 6.0L 5967CC 364Cu. In. V8 GAS 2005 2006. This radiator is developed based on old radiator's structural data, adhering to the layout and interface standards of the old radiator. It aims to achieve physical compatibility with original vehicle components, providing you with the most suitable option
- SIZE--Core Size:26 4/7" x 16 6/7" ,Overall Size:32 2/3" x 19 1/2",Inlet Size:1 3/8",Outlet Size:1 3/8". We recommend that before purchasing or installing, you can use this data to conduct a preliminary comparison with the actual available space in your vehicle's engine compartment, serving as an objective reference for your purchasing decision
- METERIAL--Made from aluminum for prolonged lifespan and with raw aluminum finish. A good balance has been achieved between thermal conductivity, weight control, and mechanical strength, which serves as the foundation for ensuring rapid heat dissipation and dispersion from the heat source to the fins, providing a reliable material guarantee for overall heat dissipation efficiency
- FEATURE--This aluminum radiator is at least 40% more efficient than stock ones. Most importantly, it has a much higher capacity for coolant than stock ones, which means that your cooling system will be more efficient and will be more resistant to temperature surges in racing applications
- INSTALLATION--The installation of the radiator involves the vehicle cooling system. To ensure performance and safety after installation, we recommend that this work be done by qualified professionals. Standard installation is a prerequisite for the product to work properly. Any issues caused by non-professional installation are not covered by the product quality warranty
How seriously to treat a cylinder-bore concern
A search-indexed secondary summary of GM preliminary information PIP5163A says cylinder-bore damage, scoring, or an out-of-round condition could cause oil consumption, misfire, cylinder leakage, or blow-by on a 2004 GTO. The underlying GM page is not established by the available material, so this should not be treated as a confirmed diagnosis or a prevalence claim. Verify the issue against current GM service information and appropriate mechanical tests before recommending internal engine work. CarComplaints’ indexed 2004 GTO bulletin summaries
Oil maintenance guidance for the 2004 and 2006 GTO
Owner-manual instructions are model-year specific. The 2004 manual says to use oil meeting GM Standard GM6094M and carrying the API certification symbol. It describes an oil-life system based on use rather than a fixed mileage interval, says to reset the system whenever oil is changed, and calls for changing oil and filter at least once a year. It also directs owners to check oil regularly, keep it at the proper level, and not add oil additives. These are historical manual instructions; confirm what applies to the individual vehicle and current service guidance. 2004 Pontiac GTO Owner’s Manual
