For occasional drives on smooth, maintained gravel, a Toyota Corolla Touring may be adequate if you slow down and choose your route carefully. For roads with ruts or protruding obstacles, a Subaru Outback has more ground clearance in the cited specifications and, on the U.S. 2025 Wilderness trim, adds all-terrain tires and underbody protection. The answer changes if “Subaru wagon” means a lower model such as the Levorg rather than an Outback.
First, identify which Subaru wagon you mean
“Subaru wagon” does not describe one set of dimensions or off-road equipment. The Outback is a raised wagon-like vehicle; the Australian Levorg brochure lists substantially less clearance. An Outback comparison therefore should not be used to predict how a Levorg or WRX Sportswagon will handle a rough road.

The figures below are not a same-market, same-year head-to-head: Toyota’s clearance figure is from its Japanese-market 2025 Corolla Touring catalog; Subaru’s regular Outback and Wilderness Apex figures are from its Australian 2026 brochure; and Wilderness equipment is from Subaru of America’s U.S. 2025 page. Check the exact year, trim and market specification before buying.

Can a Corolla wagon handle gravel roads?
It may suit smooth, maintained gravel or access roads when driven cautiously. The Japanese Corolla Touring catalog lists 130 mm minimum ground clearance, so ruts, rocks and raised obstacles leave less room beneath the vehicle than the cited Outback configurations. Ground clearance is only one consideration, but it matters when an obstacle could contact the underside.
Toyota’s Corolla Touring HEV manual for September 2025 onward advises avoiding bumps and uneven surfaces because tires can lose air and tires, wheels or vehicle parts may be damaged. It also warns that underinflation can make damage easier. That is a reason to drive gently and maintain the specified tire pressure—not evidence that every gravel road is unsuitable.

The catalog lists both front-wheel-drive and E-Four Corolla Touring versions, depending on configuration. E-Four may help with traction in conditions where the system can distribute drive to the wheels, but it cannot raise the underbody or prevent a low part from hitting a rut or rock.

If it is an Outback
The cited Outback clearance figures—220 mm for regular variants and 240 mm for Wilderness Apex in Subaru Australia’s 2026 brochure—provide more room beneath the vehicle than the 130 mm listed for the Japanese-market Corolla Touring. Subaru of America’s 2025 Outback Wilderness page specifies 9.5 inches of clearance and lists standard all-terrain Yokohama tires, a full-size spare, a front skid plate and dual-function X-MODE. Those are Wilderness-specific features, not a description of every Outback.

- Patented unique non directional interlock tread pattern design
- Additional lugs warp around all tire sidewall to give full protection to tire sidewall and rim
- Give extra traction and excellent bit while corning
- Heavy 8 ply rated nylon construction resists punctures and abrasions
- Wheel detail: 4-110mm bolt pattern, center hole: 67.9mm, bolt hole dia: 14.5mm, offset: 5+2, style: Silver mod
Subaru’s 2025 Outback owner’s manual describes the vehicle as a utility vehicle with higher ground clearance, then cautions: “Your vehicle is classified as a utility vehicle. Utility vehicles feature a higher ground clearance which enables them to be used for wide applications including off-road driving. But please keep in mind that your vehicle is neither a conventional off-road vehicle nor an all-terrain vehicle.” AWD and extra clearance do not make it suitable for every trail.
If it is a Levorg or another lower wagon
Do not assume the Outback’s clearance or Wilderness equipment applies. Subaru Australia’s Levorg brochure lists 130–135 mm of minimum clearance and labels the model no longer available for purchase in Australia. Confirm the specifications and current availability for the exact Subaru model and market you are considering.

What counts as light off-road driving?
For this comparison, keep “light off-road” to maintained gravel or relatively smooth access roads. Deep ruts, sharp rocks, deep mud and floodwater are a different risk category. The rougher the route, the more likely clearance, tire choice and exposed underbody parts—not just drivetrain—will determine whether a car can pass without damage.

- Use extra judgment or turn back: uneven surfaces, loose or sharp stones, washed-out sections, or obstacles that could strike the underside.
- Avoid: water crossings, deep mud and terrain beyond the vehicle manual’s guidance. Subaru’s 2025 Outback manual specifically says not to drive through pools and puddles.
How to choose for your route
- Verify the exact vehicle. Match the model, year, trim and country-market specification. Do not compare a Corolla Touring sold in Japan with an Outback brochure for Australia as if they were tested in one market.
- Look beyond AWD. Check minimum ground clearance, tire type and whether exposed components have protection. AWD can help with traction, but it does not prevent underbody contact.
- Match the car to the road you actually use. A Corolla Touring may be adequate for occasional smooth gravel; frequent routes with ruts or obstacles favor the extra clearance of the cited Outback configurations.
- Set a conservative limit. If you cannot judge an obstacle or the road deteriorates, stop and turn around rather than relying on AWD or momentum.
Prepare the car and inspect it afterward
Before a gravel trip, check tire pressures against the vehicle’s specified values and confirm that the tire and spare arrangement suits your route. A pressure gauge can help you check pressure, but it is not a capability upgrade and does not replace the manufacturer’s pressure guidance.

After driving on gravel or rough roads, Subaru recommends checking the undercarriage. Its 2025 Outback manual also says rough or off-road operation can call for more frequent engine-oil and brake-fluid replacement; follow the maintenance schedule and instructions for your specific vehicle. The manual warns that off-road damage without common-sense precautions may not be covered by warranty.
