Passenger-Vehicle Loans Shift Toward Higher-Value Cars in India, While Entry-Level Demand Returns

India’s average passenger-vehicle loan rose to ₹8.2 lakh in H1 2026, while repayment stretched to 62 months. The data points to premiumization, but GST 2.0 has also renewed entry-level car interest.

India’s passenger-vehicle borrowers are financing more expensive cars for longer. TransUnion CIBIL says the average passenger-vehicle loan reached ₹8.2 lakh in the first half (H1) of 2026, 49% above H1 2019, while the average repayment period rose by five months to 62 months. The pattern indicates premiumization—growth in higher-value vehicle purchases and larger financed amounts—but it is not a universal move upmarket: industry commentary also reports renewed interest in entry-level cars after GST 2.0.

What the latest loan data shows

TransUnion CIBIL’s October 13, 2026 announcement compares India’s passenger-vehicle credit market in H1 2019 with H1 2026. Its headline measures are:

Measure H1 2019 H1 2026 Change
Average passenger-vehicle loan About ₹5.5 lakh, implied by the reported increase ₹8.2 lakh Up 49%
Average repayment tenure 57 months 62 months Up five months

The ₹5.5 lakh H1 2019 figure is a mathematical back-calculation from TransUnion CIBIL’s reported 49% increase, not a separately quoted historical amount. The comparison covers half-year periods, not full-year results, and applies to India rather than a global market.

Why larger loans are associated with premiumization

TransUnion CIBIL links the higher average loan amount to rising vehicle prices and customers’ preference for higher-value cars, including SUVs and vehicles with more features. The announcement does not separate how much of the increase comes from price inflation, a change in the mix of vehicles purchased, or other financing factors. A larger loan therefore should not be read on its own as proof that borrowers have higher incomes, greater affordability, or more financial stress.

Vehicle mix matters

Moving from a small hatchback to an SUV, or choosing a higher trim with additional safety, comfort and technology equipment, raises the amount that must be financed even when the buyer’s down payment policy is unchanged. That mix effect can lift the market average without every borrower buying a premium vehicle.

Longer tenures reduce the monthly payment

The five-month increase in average tenure, to 62 months, spreads repayment over a longer period. That can make a higher-priced vehicle’s monthly instalment easier to fit into a household budget, although it generally keeps the debt outstanding for longer and may increase total interest depending on the rate and loan terms. The announcement provides no current interest-rate or total-cost comparison.

Who is providing the financing?

In H1 2026, non-bank finance companies (NBFCs) accounted for 37% of passenger-vehicle loans, compared with 26% for private banks, according to TransUnion CIBIL.

Reported category Share of passenger-vehicle loans, H1 2026
NBFCs 37%
Private banks 26%

These are category shares reported by the bureau, not a ranking of lenders or a recommendation to borrow from one type of provider. The available announcement does not provide the remaining market breakdown or explain whether the shares are measured by loan count, value, or another portfolio definition, so they should not be treated as a complete market-share table.

Premium vehicles are not limited to India’s biggest cities

TransUnion CIBIL reports that 51% of higher-value car-loan borrowers came from semi-urban and rural India. The accessible announcement does not provide the detailed methodology or category definitions behind that figure. It does, however, indicate that demand for more expensive vehicles is extending beyond metropolitan centres rather than being solely a large-city phenomenon.

Why entry-level cars are still part of the story

A September 2025 CRIF High Mark report reproduced an industry perspective from Vivek Chopra, Chief Operating Officer—Retail at Tata Capital. Chopra described a multi-year shift toward mid-segment SUVs and higher variants, then said GST 2.0 changes and attractive lending options had renewed interest in entry-level cars among first-time owners. His statement is executive commentary, not a population-wide survey or a TransUnion CIBIL measurement.

“While the industry has witnessed a structured shift towards premiumization over the last few years, with customers preference to mid segment SUVs and higher variants within models; the recent GST 2.0 changes backed by attractive lending options has brought in a renewed interest in entry level cars for first time owners.”

Taken together, the evidence describes two simultaneous currents: established buyers and many households are selecting SUVs or higher trims, while tax changes and financing availability may be bringing some first-time buyers back toward lower-priced cars. Premiumization is therefore a market-level direction, not a claim that every segment or borrower is moving to a costlier vehicle.

How the 2026 figures differ from an industry forecast

CRISIL Ratings’ January 2025 outlook projected 22–23% growth in car and utility-vehicle financing for the then-current and following fiscal year, citing continued preference for premium vehicles. That was a dated forecast made before the H1 2026 figures; it is not a realized growth rate and should not be substituted for the bureau’s reported loan-average data.

What borrowers should take from the trend

  • Compare the vehicle’s total on-road cost, down payment and insurance—not only the advertised monthly instalment.
  • Check how a 62-month-style tenure changes total interest versus a shorter schedule offered for the same vehicle.
  • Separate a genuinely higher-value vehicle choice from a price increase that raises the loan amount without adding equivalent equipment.
  • Review prepayment, processing and late-payment terms because the market-level averages do not describe any individual borrower’s offer.

TransUnion CIBIL’s landing-page summary also says car-loan delinquency can vary by as much as 160 basis points within the same risk tier based on borrower behaviour and mobility history. That observation does not establish a default rate, an affordability threshold or a causal explanation for the premiumization trend; borrowers still need to assess their own income stability and repayment buffer.

What is established—and what is not

The strongest established findings are the ₹8.2 lakh H1 2026 average loan, its 49% increase over H1 2019, the 62-month average tenure, the reported NBFC and private-bank shares, and the 51% semi-urban and rural proportion among higher-value borrowers. The accessible announcement and landing-page summary do not provide full methodology, underlying tables, lender-level offers, current rates or eligibility rules. Those limits matter when applying a market average to a particular car purchase.

The Bottom Line

India’s passenger-vehicle credit market is financing costlier cars over longer periods, consistent with a premiumization trend led by SUVs and higher variants. The direction is not one-way: GST 2.0 and lending conditions have also revived entry-level interest, especially among first-time buyers.
