There is no reliable single annual figure for owning an R34 GT-R. The cost depends on the specific car’s purchase price and condition, its import and registration status, the work it needs, and your location and intended use. The useful way to budget is to price those factors separately—starting with the car itself and an independent inspection—rather than rely on a generic maintenance estimate.
How much does an R34 GT-R cost to own?
Build a vehicle-specific budget across these cost areas. Prices for repairs, insurance and local fees cannot be responsibly generalized: the available sources do not establish representative current amounts for them.
| Cost area | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Acquisition | Exact trim, condition, mileage, originality, records, seller and comparable recent sales. Hagerty has a valuation page for a 1999 V-spec, but a valuation is a reference—not a guaranteed transaction price: Hagerty’s 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R value page. |
| Import and compliance | Manufacture date, import route, federal paperwork, state registration and local emissions requirements. The rules depend on jurisdiction and the individual car. |
| Initial work | Independent inspection findings, fluids, age-related components, tires, brakes, leaks and other repairs. Get a written inspection and itemized quote; no repair estimate or invoice-backed average is established here. |
| Routine service and repairs | Service history, condition, use, modifications, parts sourcing and specialist labor. No sourced current annual maintenance figure is established. |
| Tires and consumables | Actual wheel and tire setup and intended use. Fitment varies; verify the car before ordering. |
| Insurance | Agreed value, mileage limits, use restrictions, storage, eligibility and valuation documentation. No universal premium or eligibility determination is established. |
| Ongoing location costs | Taxes, registration, storage, transport and local compliance, all of which depend on where the car is kept and registered. |
How much does it cost to import a Nissan Skyline?
There is no single import-cost answer without a destination, vehicle, import route and registration plan. For a U.S. buyer, NHTSA’s 25-year exemption is measured from the vehicle’s manufacture date. Its guidance also describes conditions for vehicles under 25 years old; its Skyline eligibility example concerns R33s and does not establish blanket approval for every R34. Check the exact car’s build date and current federal and local requirements using NHTSA’s Importation and Certification FAQs.
Before committing to a car, confirm the paperwork and route with the relevant authorities and establish that it can be registered where you live. Federal import treatment alone does not settle state registration or local emissions requirements.

What does R34 GT-R maintenance cost?
No representative current annual maintenance cost is established by the available sources. A budget should follow an inspection of the actual vehicle, not an assumed yearly allowance. Ask an independent specialist familiar with the model to document condition and deferred work, then obtain itemized parts and labor quotes.
Price the car’s condition, not just its trim
Service documentation, provenance, modifications and the results of an inspection can materially change the work a particular car needs. Hagerty’s December 5, 2022 buyer-caution article is a dated example of why scrutiny matters; it is not a current price guide or evidence of a 2026 market average.

Verify tires and consumables against the car
Nissan lists 245/40ZR18 tires for its production 2000 Skyline GT-R V-spec II. That is a trim-specific historical specification, not a universal fitment for every R34. Check the car’s actual wheels and tire configuration before buying replacements. Nissan’s V-spec II Heritage Collection entry also lists that model at 206 kW (280 PS), 392 N·m and 1,560 kg; these are published specifications for that cited car, not ownership-cost estimates.

Rarity can affect asking prices, but it does not establish a particular premium. Nissan says the combined 2002 M-Spec Nür and V-spec II Nür release was limited to 1,000 units; that production statement is not evidence of a current sale value. See Nissan’s M-Spec Nür Heritage Collection entry.

What to confirm before you buy
- Identify the exact car. Verify trim, manufacture date, provenance, mileage, modifications and available service records.
- Confirm the legal path. Check federal import requirements and the registration and emissions rules that apply where the car will be registered.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Request written findings on condition, deferred work, tires, brakes, leaks and age-related components.
- Get itemized quotes. Price the inspection findings with qualified repairers and verify parts availability and labor before treating the car’s purchase price as the full cost.
- Confirm insurance and running costs. Ask insurers about eligibility, agreed value, usage and storage conditions; separately check local taxes, registration and storage costs.
