The Nissan Pathfinder’s U.S. generation timeline has three major construction changes: it began as a body-on-frame SUV, switched to unibody construction for 1996, returned to body-on-frame for 2005, and went back to unibody for 2013. Nissan’s published U.S. history gives the first four generations’ model-year ranges through 2016; later model years and the fifth generation need year- and market-specific context.
Nissan Pathfinder generations at a glance
These ranges use U.S. model years, following Nissan’s historical account. Model-year boundaries help identify a vehicle more reliably than the calendar year it was introduced.
| Generation | U.S. model years | Construction and key changes |
|---|---|---|
| First | 1987–1995 | Body-on-frame SUV related to the Hardbody pickup; initially offered with two doors, then rear doors for 1990. |
| Second | 1996–2004 | Switched to a unibody platform and more aerodynamic styling; a 3.5-liter V6 joined for 2001. |
| Third | 2005–2012 | Returned to body-on-frame construction; added a fold-down third row for seven-passenger seating and offered a V8 starting in 2008. |
| Fourth | 2013 onward in Nissan’s 2016 history | Returned to a unibody platform for 2013, with a 3.5-liter V6 and Xtronic transmission. Nissan’s retrospective discusses this generation through 2016; consult later year-specific sources for subsequent U.S. models. |
| Fifth | Later generation; exact U.S. range not established by the cited historical account | Nissan Middle East identifies its later Pathfinder as fifth-generation. Regional equipment details should not be assumed to apply to U.S. models. |
Nissan’s Pathfinder history covers the U.S. chronology through the 2017 refresh, while its Middle East retrospective discusses a fifth-generation model in that regional context.
What changed in each generation?
First generation: 1987–1995
Nissan introduced the Pathfinder in 1986 as a 1987 model. The first version was a two-door, body-on-frame SUV related to Nissan’s Hardbody pickup. For the 1990 model year, Nissan added rear doors with concealed handles in the C-pillars, changing access to the rear seating without abandoning the original SUV’s basic construction.

Second generation: 1996–2004
The 1996 model year brought the first major platform reversal: the Pathfinder moved from body-on-frame to unibody construction and adopted more aerodynamic styling. Nissan added a 3.5-liter V6 for 2001. This generation therefore marks the start of the Pathfinder’s unibody period, not the beginning of its history as a family-oriented SUV.
Third generation: 2005–2012
For 2005, Nissan returned the Pathfinder to body-on-frame construction on a modified F-Alpha platform. The redesigned cabin gained a fold-down third row, enabling seating for up to seven. A V8 became available for 2008, adding a more powerful option to the generation’s lineup.

Nissan’s 2016 history says a properly equipped third-generation Pathfinder V8 could tow up to 7,000 pounds. That figure applies to the specified V8 configuration, not every year, engine, or trim. The same retrospective reports 8.4 cubic feet more interior roominess for the fourth-generation design than for its predecessor.
Fourth generation: 2013 onward in the 2016 history
The 2013 redesign brought the Pathfinder back to a unibody platform, paired with a 3.5-liter V6 and Xtronic transmission. Nissan said the 2013 model’s combined city/highway fuel economy improved by 30 percent over the previous V6-equipped 2012 Pathfinder and cited up to 27 mpg on the highway. These are Nissan’s published comparison and “up to” figure, not independent test results.

Nissan’s historical page discusses the fourth generation through 2016 and separately notes the 2017 refresh. Its 2016 cutoff should not be treated as the end of the generation; use Nissan’s Pathfinder press kit archive to check later U.S. model years.
Fifth generation: market-specific details
Nissan Middle East’s 2023 retrospective describes a fifth-generation Pathfinder with a nine-speed automatic transmission and seating for eight in its regional context. Those details establish what Nissan described for that market; they are not a substitute for checking U.S. specifications or equipment by model year and grade.

What is the latest U.S. Pathfinder model year?
Nissan’s 2026 U.S. press kit lists SV, Rock Creek, SL, and Platinum grades. For 2026, Nissan describes revised front and rear fascias, satin exterior badges, Baltic Teal paint, a restyled dashboard, and a larger standard touchscreen. Nissan said the model would reach dealerships in early 2026; that timing is not a guarantee of current local inventory. Check the 2026 Pathfinder press kit for Nissan’s published description and the archive for other model years.
How to identify the right Pathfinder information
- Start with the model year. The same generation can span multiple years, and engines or equipment can change within it.
- Confirm the market. U.S. generation dates and trim details do not necessarily match Middle East or other regional versions.
- Use a year-specific source for exact specifications. The generation timeline does not provide a complete year-by-year matrix for trims, drivetrains, safety features, recalls, or specifications.
For repair research, Nissan’s factory-authorized service publications catalog allows searches by vehicle and year and covers Nissan vehicles from model year 1989 onward. Nissan’s owner manual portal also selects publications by vehicle and year. Match both model year and market when choosing a reference.
