Yes, the recall was real—but the headline needs two important qualifications. On March 18, 2025, Tesla filed U.S. safety recall 25V-170, covering 46,096 Cybertrucks built between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025. That was effectively the entire early U.S. Cybertruck population at the time, not every Cybertruck built later or every truck sold worldwide.
The recalled part was a roofline exterior trim assembly called the cant rail or cantrail. Its stainless-steel panel could separate at an adhesive joint and become a road hazard. Tesla’s filing does not say the company accidentally bought cheap, counterfeit, or unsuitable glue. Its technical description says the original structural adhesive was susceptible to environmental embrittlement. The remedy uses a different adhesive plus a welded stud and nut for mechanical clamping.
What Tesla actually recalled
The recall involved the Cybertruck’s exterior cant rail, sometimes written as cantrail. It is the stainless-steel trim assembly that runs along the roofline near the side of the windshield and cabin.

- Pro-Tip To Avoid Poor Results - Refrain From Applying Resin Too Quickly, Air Pockets Forming During The Repair Or Repairing On A Contaminated Crack As This May Compromise Your Results. Use A Gentle Touch — Too Much Pressure Can Extend The Crack Rather Than Repair It.
This is an important distinction. The cant rail is an exterior cosmetic assembly, not the Cybertruck’s primary frame or the entire stainless-steel body. According to Tesla’s Part 573 recall filing, the assembly consists of:
- an electrocoated-steel stamping;
- a stainless-steel exterior panel bonded to that stamping with structural adhesive; and
- fasteners that attach the assembly to the vehicle.
The failure mode was delamination at the adhesive joint. The stainless panel could loosen from the cant rail assembly or separate from the vehicle. A loose panel could produce cabin noise; if it detached while the Cybertruck was moving, it could create a hazard for following motorists.
So the accurate description is not that the Cybertruck’s main structure was held together only by glue. A structural adhesive was used in one exterior trim assembly, and that assembly also used mechanical fasteners.
Did “nearly all Cybertrucks” get recalled?
Nearly all early U.S. Cybertrucks, yes. Every Cybertruck ever built, no.
| Detail | What the recall filing says |
|---|---|
| U.S. NHTSA campaign | 25V-170 |
| Tesla bulletin | SB-25-10-001 |
| Potentially involved | 46,096 vehicles |
| Model years | 2024 and 2025 |
| Production range | November 13, 2023, through February 27, 2025 |
| Estimated vehicles with the defect | 1% of the recalled population |
| Recall decision | Tesla voluntarily decided a recall was warranted on March 11, 2025 |
| NHTSA filing date | March 18, 2025 |
| Remedy | Replacement of both cant rail assemblies at no charge |
The 46,096 figure is the U.S. NHTSA recall population. It should not be presented as the number of affected Cybertrucks worldwide or as the number of Canadian vehicles involved. Later-built Cybertrucks are outside this particular campaign’s stated production range, although they may have other open recalls.
There is another denominator that headlines can blur: Tesla estimated that only 1% of the 46,096 vehicles actually had the defect. That does not mean Tesla recalled only 1% of the trucks. It means the company recalled the entire production range it considered potentially affected even though it estimated that active failures would occur in a much smaller portion of the population.
In other words, recall population and confirmed defective population are not the same thing. A manufacturer may apply a broad remedy when it cannot reliably identify every affected part or vehicle by VIN.
Was it really the “wrong glue”?
That phrase gets part of the story right: adhesive durability was central to the recall, and Tesla’s replacement assembly uses a different adhesive. But the phrase also implies facts that the public record does not establish.
Recommended Free Tools
Tesla’s filing describes the original adhesive as susceptible to environmental embrittlement. It says the replacement adhesive is not prone to that condition and adds a welded stud and nut to mechanically clamp the assembly to the vehicle structure. The filing’s cause field is listed as not reported.
The public documents do not identify:
- the adhesive’s brand or formulation;
- a supplier substitution or warehouse mix-up;
- a purchasing mistake;
- a deliberate cost-cutting decision; or
- evidence that Tesla used an adhesive unsuitable for any automotive application.
That makes “wrong glue” a useful shorthand for a general audience, but not a precise technical conclusion. The better wording is that Tesla identified an adhesive durability problem in a cant rail assembly and changed both the adhesive and the attachment method.

What environmental embrittlement means
In general adhesive-engineering terms, environmental aging can reduce an adhesive’s mechanical performance after exposure to service conditions such as moisture, temperature cycling, chemicals, ultraviolet radiation, or combinations of those stresses. Materials references from Loctite and the National Institute of Standards and Technology discuss those broad effects.
Those sources provide general adhesive context. They do not prove which environmental mechanism affected the Cybertruck adhesive in this case. Tesla’s filing does not say, for example, that water alone caused the failure. The defensible claim is the narrower one: the adhesive was considered vulnerable to environmental embrittlement.

Structural adhesives are widely used in vehicle manufacturing for body-in-white construction, mixed-material joints, chassis components, and exterior panels. Automotive structural-adhesive systems are designed to work alongside welding, rivets, bolts, and other joining methods.
The engineering questions are whether the selected adhesive, surface preparation, joint design, curing process, mechanical reinforcement, and validation testing are appropriate for the application. The presence of adhesive alone does not demonstrate that a vehicle was poorly constructed.
How the cant rail problem surfaced
The recall chronology does not show that Tesla immediately recognized a fleet-wide defect. The company’s filing describes a series of complaints, inspections, outside information, and an investigation that eventually led to the voluntary recall.
- January 7, 2025: Tesla became aware of a field complaint involving partial cant rail delamination.
- January 13: Tesla began an engineering study.
- January 31: Tesla learned of another partial-delamination case.
- February 6: An inspection and pull test found no separation.
- February 21: NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation notified Tesla of a vehicle-owner questionnaire alleging cant rail detachment.
- February 21 through March 7: Tesla investigated the NHTSA complaint, social-media reports, and service records.
- March 11: Tesla determined that a voluntary recall was warranted.
- March 14: Tesla had identified 151 potentially related warranty claims and reported no known related crashes, fatalities, or injuries at that time.
- March 18: Tesla submitted its Part 573 recall report to NHTSA.
- March 20: The headline story behind the “wrong glue” wording was published.
The chronology establishes that an initial pull test did not detect separation and that Tesla later broadened its review after NHTSA’s questionnaire and additional records. It does not establish why the February 6 test found no separation, whether the test method was inadequate, or that Tesla concealed known evidence. Those would require additional documentary evidence.

Tesla’s filing planned owner notifications for May 19, 2025. It also anticipated beginning the remedy in production around March 21, 2025. “Anticipated” is important: that filing language should not be treated as independent confirmation of the actual production-change date.
What was the safety risk?
This was primarily a risk of an exterior trim panel separating in motion—not a claim that the Cybertruck’s chassis would suddenly collapse.
A partially detached panel could make noise inside the cabin and alert the driver to a problem. A panel that fully detached could land in the roadway or strike a following vehicle. That is why a cosmetic-looking part can still produce a safety recall: the concern is not only appearance, but the possibility of a loose object becoming a traffic hazard.
Tesla reported 151 potentially related warranty claims as of March 14, 2025. It knew of no related collisions, fatalities, or injuries as of that date. Those are time-specific figures from the recall filing, not a lifetime total through 2026 and not proof that no later incidents have ever been reported.

How Tesla fixes the recall
The remedy is replacement of both the left- and right-hand cant rail assemblies. Tesla’s replacement design uses a different adhesive and a welded stud-and-nut arrangement that mechanically clamps the assembly to the vehicle structure.
Tesla’s current Cybertruck cantrail-replacement support page says:
- the repair is free;
- the service takes approximately one hour; and
- affected owners may continue driving while waiting for parts and scheduling.
Tesla’s service bulletin gives an estimated labor time of 0.66 to 0.72 hours, depending on whether butyl patches are needed. The bulletin says that when the campaign applies, the correction is performed by replacing both assemblies without an inspection first.
The bulletin also says recall work must be performed by Tesla-certified service centers. It warns that work by uncertified technicians could create unsafe conditions or affect warranty provisions.
What owners should do
- Find the vehicle identification number. Use the specific truck’s 17-character VIN, not only its model year or delivery date.
- Check Tesla’s VIN tool. Use the Tesla VIN Recall Search.
- Check NHTSA as well. Search the same VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup.
- Confirm the status. Determine whether campaign 25V-170 is listed as unrepaired or completed.
- Schedule Tesla service. Do not pay for the recall repair; Tesla says the replacement is provided at no charge.
- Do not attempt a home repair. Do not add household adhesive, drill new holes, or re-bond the panel yourself.
NHTSA’s lookup generally displays unrepaired recalls and does not show recalls that have already been repaired. NHTSA also warns that recently announced recalls may not yet have every affected VIN identified. A clean result therefore should not be interpreted as a guarantee that the vehicle has never had a recall or that it has no other open campaigns.
If the cant rail is already loose
Tesla identifies unusual cabin noise, visible movement, or panel separation as possible signs of the problem. Tesla’s general page says affected owners may continue driving while waiting for the repair. However, if a panel is visibly lifting or separating, a conservative safety response is to avoid unnecessary high-speed or highway driving, contact Tesla service promptly, and use roadside assistance if the panel is actively coming loose.
The advice to avoid unnecessary high-speed driving in that situation is prudent editorial guidance, not a quoted Tesla instruction. A visibly separating panel presents a different practical risk from an intact panel on a vehicle awaiting scheduled service.
What used-Cybertruck buyers should verify
A seller’s statement that a Cybertruck is “not recalled” is not enough. Ask for the VIN and check the actual vehicle through Tesla and NHTSA before buying.
- Confirm whether campaign 25V-170 is open or completed.
- Check for additional Cybertruck recalls, including campaigns unrelated to the cant rail.
- Do not assume that a truck built after February 27, 2025 has no recalls; it is simply outside this particular production range.
- Do not assume that a completed cant rail campaign means every other recall has been addressed.
- If the truck has a wrap or aftermarket trim, ask Tesla how the modification affects access to the repair before making assumptions about removal, reimbursement, liability, or warranty coverage.
The official sources reviewed do not establish a universal policy for wrapped Cybertrucks or aftermarket modifications. Owner-forum claims about credits or warranty treatment should not be treated as Tesla policy without written confirmation.
Canadian owners: use the Canadian campaign
The U.S. figure of 46,096 should not be reused as a Canadian recall count. Transport Canada published a separate campaign, recall 2025142, covering 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks whose exterior stainless-steel cant rail panels could loosen and detach.

Tesla’s associated service bulletin covers the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada, but the public Canadian notice does not establish a Canadian population equal to the U.S. NHTSA figure. Canadian owners should use Transport Canada’s recall information and Tesla’s Canadian service channel, while still checking the individual VIN.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse this with the earlier Cybertruck adhesive recall
The cant rail campaign was not the first Cybertruck recall involving an adhesive-related exterior panel. In 2024, Tesla recalled 12,150 2024 Cybertrucks under U.S. campaign 24V-457.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat earlier recall involved a different part: the sail applique on the trunk-bed trim. The reported issues included improper installation, incomplete application of adhesion promoter, and incomplete wet-out of pressure-sensitive tape. Tesla reported 862 potentially related warranty claims as of June 12, 2024, with no known related collisions, injuries, or deaths at that time.
The remedy for the sail-applique problem involved a corrected part and improved adhesive-application controls. It was a different component, a different adhesive system, a different production population, and a different recall campaign.
News coverage sometimes compresses both events into the idea that Cybertruck panels were “falling off because of glue.” That description loses the details that matter to owners: which panel, which VIN range, which repair, and which campaign.
Was this an NHTSA-ordered recall?
No. Tesla made the recall decision voluntarily on March 11, 2025 and filed the campaign with NHTSA on March 18. NHTSA assigned the campaign number and manages the federal recall process, but the public filing describes this as a Tesla-initiated voluntary recall.
NHTSA explains that most safety recalls are voluntarily initiated by manufacturers, while the agency oversees and manages the recall system. The precise description is therefore:
Tesla voluntarily recalled 46,096 early Cybertrucks in a U.S. campaign filed with NHTSA after an adhesive-related cant rail defect created a risk that a panel could detach in traffic.
It is not accurate to say that NHTSA recalled every Cybertruck because Tesla glued the truck together incorrectly.
Answering the headline literally
Nearly all? Broadly accurate only if it means nearly all early U.S. Cybertrucks within the November 13, 2023–February 27, 2025 production range. It does not mean every Cybertruck ever built or every truck worldwide.

Wrong glue? Fair as a short description of an adhesive-related failure, but not the official technical finding. The filing says the adhesive was susceptible to environmental embrittlement; it does not say that Tesla used a cheap, counterfeit, substituted, or mistakenly purchased product.
Was the whole truck glued together? No. The recall involved a specific exterior cant rail assembly made from a stainless panel and steel stamping, attached with adhesive and fasteners. It was not the Cybertruck’s primary structural frame.
Was every recalled truck actively failing? No. Tesla estimated that 1% of the recalled population had the defect, while recalling the full potentially affected range.
What should an owner do? Check the VIN, schedule Tesla’s free replacement if the campaign is open, and do not attempt a DIY adhesive repair. Tesla’s current guidance says owners may continue driving while waiting, but visible separation warrants prompt service and a cautious approach to high-speed driving.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Cybertruck have the cant rail recall?
No. U.S. campaign 25V-170 covers 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks built from November 13, 2023, through February 27, 2025. Later-built trucks are outside this specific campaign, although they may have other recalls. Check the individual VIN through Tesla and NHTSA.
Can I drive my Cybertruck while waiting for the recall repair?
Tesla’s current cantrail-recall guidance says affected owners may continue driving while waiting for parts and scheduling. If the panel is visibly loose or separating, avoid unnecessary high-speed driving, contact Tesla service, and use roadside assistance if it is actively coming loose.
Is the Cybertruck’s frame held together with glue?
No. The recalled part was a specific cosmetic cant rail assembly near the roofline. It included a stainless-steel panel bonded to an electrocoated-steel stamping and was also attached with fasteners. The recall did not concern the entire vehicle frame.
Is this the same as the 2024 Cybertruck sail-applique recall?
No. The 2024 campaign 24V-457 involved a different trunk-bed trim component, the sail applique, and different adhesive-application problems. The March 2025 campaign 25V-170 involved the roofline cant rail and a structural adhesive susceptible to environmental embrittlement.

The Bottom Line
The most accurate verdict: Tesla did recall 46,096 early U.S. Cybertrucks because a roofline cant rail panel could separate. But “wrong glue” overstates what the public documents prove. The official finding is that the original adhesive was susceptible to environmental embrittlement; Tesla’s free remedy replaces both cant rail assemblies with a different adhesive and added mechanical reinforcement.
