Quick answer: which car brands are most reliable?
- Best predicted reliability for new cars: Toyota, Subaru, Lexus, Honda, and BMW, according to Consumer Reports’ 2026 ranking.
- Best observed three-year dependability: Lexus, with 151 problems per 100 vehicles in J.D. Power’s 2026 study.
- Best mass-market brand in J.D. Power’s 2026 study: Buick, at 160 problems per 100 vehicles.
- Best general strategy: choose a proven model and powertrain, avoid the first year of a major redesign when possible, and investigate recalls and owner complaints before buying.
“Problems per 100 vehicles” is abbreviated as PP100. A lower number is better, but the figure includes complaints about technology and infotainment—not only mechanical breakdowns.
Consumer Reports’ 2026 predicted-reliability ranking
Consumer Reports used owner-reported data from approximately 380,000 vehicles across 20 problem areas. Its ranking estimates the reliability of new vehicles using data from the 2000–2025 model years and some early 2026 vehicles. It is therefore most useful when you are shopping for a new car.

Consumer Reports ranks average predicted reliability, not repair cost, resale value, safety, or owner satisfaction. It also warns shoppers to examine the rating for the individual model. A brand average can hide a large difference between, for example, a well-established sedan and a newly redesigned SUV.
What stands out in the Consumer Reports list?
- Toyota remains the strongest new-car reliability bet in this study. Its first-place result reflects the brand average, not a guarantee for every Toyota model.
- Subaru, Lexus, and Honda occupy the next three positions. That makes the Toyota/Lexus and Honda/Acura families useful starting points for buyers prioritizing dependability.
- BMW reached fifth. A high reliability prediction does not mean BMW maintenance will cost the same as Toyota maintenance.
- Tesla rose eight positions to ninth. Better results from the Model 3 and Model Y contributed to the improvement.
- Mazda’s 14th-place position needs context. The redesigned CX-5 was not included in the calculation because Consumer Reports did not have enough data for the new version.
- Some brands were not ranked. Alfa Romeo, Dodge, Fiat, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lucid, Maserati, MINI, Mitsubishi, Polestar, and Porsche did not meet the minimum data requirement for the Consumer Reports reliability ranking.

Tesla appeared at 209 PP100 but was marked not rank-eligible under J.D. Power’s award rules. It should not be treated as an official ranked brand in that table.
What types of cars are proving most dependable?
Conventional hybrids
Conventional hybrids continue to look stronger than many buyers expect. Consumer Reports found that they generally performed better than many EVs and plug-in hybrids. J.D. Power’s 2026 results put conventional hybrids at 213 PP100, compared with 198 for gasoline vehicles, 237 for battery-electric vehicles, and 281 for plug-in hybrids. The numbers do not mean every hybrid is dependable, but they reject the idea that all hybrids are inherently troublesome.

Gasoline vehicles
Gasoline vehicles recorded the lowest J.D. Power powertrain figure at 198 PP100. That advantage can be offset by a complicated transmission, turbocharging, emissions hardware, or an unreliable infotainment system, so the engine type alone is not enough to predict ownership costs.

EVs and plug-in hybrids
Battery-electric vehicles averaged more reported problems than gasoline vehicles in J.D. Power’s 2026 study, while plug-in hybrids performed worst. Yet EV reliability varies dramatically by model. Tesla’s improved Consumer Reports result, particularly for the Model 3 and Model Y, is one reason a blanket statement that every EV is unreliable is inaccurate.
The reliability problems buyers are actually seeing
Modern reliability complaints are not limited to engines and transmissions. J.D. Power identified infotainment as the most problematic area in its 2026 study. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity was the single most common issue, at 8.9 PP100.
Software updates are not a guaranteed fix either. Forty percent of surveyed owners said their vehicle received a software update during the previous year. Only 27% said the update improved the vehicle, while 58% noticed no difference.
This matters when comparing vehicles with similar mechanical hardware. A car that rarely breaks down can still be frustrating if its screen freezes, navigation loses its connection, driver-assistance alerts misbehave, or updates require repeated dealer visits.

Why the exact model and year matter more than the badge
Brand rankings are averages. The same manufacturer can sell one model with a strong history and another with a poor first year. J.D. Power’s 2025 data illustrates the redesign penalty: vehicles launched as all-new models averaged 241 PP100, versus 196 PP100 for carryover models.
That does not make every new design a bad purchase. It does mean buyers should be cautious when a model has a new platform, engine, transmission, electronics architecture, or plug-in system and no meaningful owner history.
A practical research process
- Start with the brand ranking. Use Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Subaru, Buick, and other high-performing brands as a shortlist—not as a final answer.
- Check the exact model. Look for model-specific reliability predictions, owner complaints, technical service bulletins, and recall history.
- Separate model years. A carryover 2025 may have a better evidence base than an all-new 2026, even if the newer car has more features.
- Identify the powertrain. Check whether the model uses a conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid, turbocharged engine, dual-clutch transmission, or first-generation battery system.
- Price routine maintenance and major repairs. A good reliability score does not make a luxury car inexpensive to service. Obtain insurance and maintenance estimates before signing.
- Test the technology. Pair your phone, try the controls, inspect camera behavior, and confirm that the features you need work without awkward workarounds.
- Check recalls by VIN on a used vehicle. Confirm that open safety recalls have been repaired and review the service records rather than relying on the seller’s description.
Bottom line on the most reliable brands
Toyota is the best-supported choice for predicted new-car reliability in Consumer Reports’ 2026 ranking. Subaru, Lexus, Honda, and BMW follow it in that study. For vehicles with three years of real-world use, Lexus leads J.D. Power’s 2026 results, and Buick leads the mass-market category.

The rankings disagree in places because they measure different things. That is not a flaw; it is a reminder to use the right evidence. Pick a brand with a strong record, then verify the specific model, powertrain, model year, recall history, and expected service cost.

FAQ
What is the most reliable car brand in 2025–2026?
Toyota ranks first for predicted new-car reliability in Consumer Reports’ 2026 study. Lexus ranks first for observed three-year dependability in J.D. Power’s 2026 study, so the answer depends on whether you are buying new or evaluating vehicles after three years.
Is Toyota more reliable than Lexus?
Consumer Reports ranked Toyota first and Lexus third for predicted 2026 reliability. J.D. Power ranked Lexus first overall for three-year dependability. Both are strong choices, but the exact model and model year matter more than the brand comparison alone.

Conventional hybrids generally perform well. Consumer Reports found them more reliable than many EVs and plug-in hybrids, and J.D. Power’s 2026 figures were 213 PP100 for conventional hybrids, 237 for battery-electric vehicles, and 281 for plug-in hybrids.
Should I avoid a newly redesigned car?
Not automatically, but a first-year redesign carries more uncertainty. J.D. Power’s 2025 study found new-model launches averaged 241 problems per 100 vehicles, compared with 196 PP100 for carryover models. Waiting for additional owner data can reduce that risk.
The Bottom Line
Best new-car reliability bet: Toyota. Best three-year dependability result: Lexus. Best mass-market result in J.D. Power’s 2026 study: Buick. Treat these as starting points, then research the exact vehicle and model year before buying.
