The Ford Model T made motoring more accessible through mass production; the Model A, its successor, was a ground-up redesign for changing roads and expectations. T production ended in May 1927. Model A production began that November, and Ford publicly introduced it on December 2, 1927.
Why did Ford replace the Model T?
By the mid-1920s, roads were becoming more modern and customer tastes were changing. Henry Ford still saw the T as a good fit for rural drivers and people seeking an affordable car, but Ford’s history says that by late 1926 he had directed engineers to develop a new model: simply updating the T and cutting its price would no longer be enough. The result was not just a refreshed Model T. Ford described the Model A as a completely different car with no T parts carried over.
The Model T had arrived in 1908 and remained in production until May 1927. Model A production started in November 1927. The Henry Ford dates its public introduction to December 2, 1927. The Henry Ford’s chronology records the production transition, while its Post-Model T collection notes nearly five million Model As sold during the successor’s four-year production run.
How do the Model T and Model A compare?
| Difference | Model T | Model A |
|---|---|---|
| Role and era | Introduced in 1908; produced through May 1927. Ford emphasizes its affordability, utility and mass production. | Successor introduced in late 1927, designed for changing roads and consumer tastes. |
| Design | Ford offered multiple body styles, including touring car, runabout, coupe, Tudor and Fordor sedans. Color availability varied over time. | A lower, sleeker body influenced by Edsel Ford’s styling ideas. |
| Engine character | Four-cylinder layout; matched displacement and horsepower figures are not stated in the cited Ford comparison. | Four-cylinder layout, described by Ford as more powerful and smoother than the T; matched displacement and horsepower figures are not stated in the cited Ford comparison. |
| Ride and windshield | The cited Ford comparison does not establish equivalent equipment details for all T years and versions. | Hydraulic shocks and a Triplex shatterproof safety-glass windshield were among its new features. |
| Production and sales | Ford reports more than 15 million built and sold. | The Henry Ford reports nearly five million sold during the four-year production run. |
What changed in the Model A’s design and equipment?
A lower, sleeker shape
Ford describes the Model A as lower and sleeker than the Model T, with bodyline ideas influenced by Edsel Ford. This was a response to changing tastes, not a claim that every Model T shared one uniform body: Ford offered the T in several configurations.

More power and a smoother character
Both cars used four-cylinder engines, but Ford characterizes the Model A as more powerful and smoother. Ford’s history article gives the Model A a stated speed capability of 55 to 65 mph; it does not provide a matched Model T figure. That range therefore should not be treated as a direct, like-for-like speed comparison. Nor do the cited histories establish equivalent horsepower or displacement figures for specific model years.
Windshield and suspension features
The Model A added a Triplex shatterproof safety-glass windshield and hydraulic shocks. Ford describes these as new for the company and unusual in the low-priced field. These documented distinctions do not establish that every Model A had every safety feature found on later cars, or that all T examples had identical equipment.

How did the Model T become so influential?
The T’s defining difference was its scale. Ford says it used mass production to sell the car at prices ranging from $260 to $850 and reports more than 15 million built and sold. Those are historical prices and totals, not present-day equivalents.
At Highland Park, Ford says the moving automobile assembly line began operating in October 1913. Model T production there rose from hundreds to thousands of cars per day, and Ford says the price fell from $850 to $260. The figures describe Ford’s account of the T’s production and price history, not a universal price for every year, body style or market. Ford’s Highland Park history explains the role of the plant and moving line.

Ford’s history also cautions against treating the T as a single black-bodied configuration: it was offered in multiple body styles, and black was the only color offered from 1914 through 1925—not for the entire production run. Ford’s Model T history describes its changing body and color offerings.

“Better” depends on what matters. The T’s historical achievement was putting a practical car within reach of many buyers through mass production and scale. The A retained a four-cylinder approach but brought a new body, more power and smoothness by Ford’s account, hydraulic shocks and a safety-glass windshield. It was Ford’s answer to newer expectations, rather than a continuation of the T’s design.

Ford reports that about 10 million people viewed the new Model A during its first week. That figure describes launch crowds, not sales. Ford also recounts Henry Ford’s explanation for the name: to “wipe the slate clean and start all over again with Model A.”
For an exact mechanical comparison, the model year and body style matter. The cited histories do not provide matched specifications for displacement, horsepower, transmission operation, brakes or dimensions, and equipment could vary across years and versions. A precise comparison should use year-specific specifications for equivalent configurations rather than treating either nameplate as one unchanging set of parts.
