What a tire warranty covers—and what it does not

- Workmanship and materials: protection when the tire itself has a manufacturing defect.
- Treadwear or mileage: a model-specific promise about how long the usable tread should last under stated conditions.
- Road hazard: protection for punctures or impact damage caused by objects or road conditions; this is separate from a manufacturing-defect warranty.
- Satisfaction trial: a short period in which an eligible buyer can return a tire for dissatisfaction, subject to the plan rules.
- Roadside assistance: help for a flat, sometimes including towing, during a defined period.
Manufacturers generally do not treat a puncture, curb impact, underinflation failure or damage from an unrelated vehicle problem as a defect in materials or workmanship. That distinction explains why a tire can have a six-year defect warranty yet no protection for a nail picked up on the highway.
Michelin warranty: strong defect coverage, but no standard road-hazard promise
Core workmanship and materials term
Michelin’s U.S. passenger and light-truck replacement tires are covered against defects in workmanship and materials for the life of the original usable tread or six years from the purchase date, whichever comes first. The six-year clock is measured from the original purchase, so a tire that sits in storage does not gain a new six-year period when it is installed.
How Michelin handles a covered defect
Michelin’s published materials describe free replacement during the initial free-replacement period—generally the first 12 months or the first 2⁄32 inch of treadwear, whichever comes first—when the problem is an eligible manufacturing defect. After that point, an approved claim is normally prorated through the end of the warranty. The customer pays for the portion of usable tread already consumed, along with applicable taxes, mounting and balancing charges.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Treadwear mileage is model-specific
Michelin does not publish one mileage number that applies to its entire range. Each eligible line can have its own treadwear warranty, and some tires have no mileage guarantee. The model’s warranty document controls the promised mileage, the adjustment formula and any required rotation interval. A retailer or the tire’s documentation can confirm whether the exact size and speed rating carry a mileage warranty.
What Michelin excludes
The standard U.S. warranty excludes road-hazard injury. A nail puncture, pothole impact, curb damage or similar event therefore does not become a free replacement merely because the tire is within six years. Michelin also excludes damage linked to improper inflation, poor maintenance, mechanical irregularities, overloading, misuse, racing, accidents and improper repairs. If an alignment or suspension fault wears the tire unevenly, the resulting loss is generally outside a treadwear promise because the tire was not operated under the required conditions.
When Michelin makes sense
Michelin is a logical fit when you are selecting a specific model with a favorable published mileage rating and you are comfortable carrying your own road-hazard risk or buying separate protection from the retailer. It is less attractive for drivers who regularly encounter construction debris, unpaved roads or severe potholes and want the manufacturer itself to cover those events.

Goodyear warranty: clear six-year or 2⁄32-inch endpoint
Scope of the cited warranty
Goodyear’s highway auto and light-truck replacement warranty, as published for the United States and Canada, provides a comparable new tire either free of charge or on a prorated basis when an eligible defect is found. Coverage ends at six years from the original new-tire purchase or when the treadwear indicators become visible at 2⁄32 inch, whichever occurs first.
Free versus prorated replacement
The warranty’s free-replacement phase applies before the stated free threshold. Once that threshold has passed, an accepted claim is prorated according to the remaining usable tread. The customer normally pays the unused portion’s counterpart, plus service charges and taxes. Because the exact free period and calculation can vary by the individual warranty document, keep the model-specific terms supplied at purchase.
Tread-life coverage is not universal
Goodyear’s general warranty index directs owners to model-specific documents for tread-life coverage. The six-year/2⁄32-inch statement is the endpoint for the cited highway auto and light-truck replacement warranty, not a promise that every Goodyear tire carries the same mileage rating. A particular touring, performance, winter or specialty tire may have different eligibility or no treadwear mileage guarantee.
Road hazards and other exclusions
The cited Goodyear warranty excludes road hazards, including punctures and impact damage that are not manufacturing defects. It also excludes improper inflation or maintenance, mechanical conditions, overloading, misuse and improper repairs. A claim can fail when the tire is structurally sound but was damaged by a vehicle alignment problem, an overloaded trailer or a repair that did not meet the required standard.
When Goodyear makes sense
Goodyear’s published terms are easy to understand if your main concern is a defined age-and-tread limit for a highway passenger or light-truck replacement tire. Drivers who want manufacturer-paid protection for punctures should look beyond this warranty or add a separate road-hazard plan.

Base term and mileage ceiling
Continental’s Total Confidence Plan applies to replacement passenger and light-truck tires and advertises a limited warranty of up to 72 months. Select replacement products carry mileage coverage up to 80,000 miles. The 80,000-mile figure is a ceiling, not a brand-wide entitlement: the exact tire must be listed as eligible, and the claim must meet the plan’s maintenance and adjustment requirements.

Road-hazard replacement
Continental describes road-hazard protection for all Continental passenger and light-truck replacement tires, subject to the plan conditions, during the first 12 months. This is the key difference from the standard Michelin and cited Goodyear terms. It does not mean every puncture is automatically paid: the tire must be an eligible replacement tire, the event must fit the plan’s definition and the inspection must confirm that the damage is repairable or replaceable under the stated rules.
60-day satisfaction trial
The plan includes a 60-day customer-satisfaction trial. The trial is separate from defect and road-hazard coverage and has its own eligibility, mileage, condition and retailer requirements. Before buying, ask the participating retailer how the return is processed and whether mounting, balancing or other service charges are refundable.
Roadside assistance
Continental lists flat-tire roadside assistance, including towing up to 150 miles under the listed terms. Roadside assistance is a service benefit, not a replacement-tire guarantee. It can help you reach a safe location or a tire facility, but the damaged tire still has to qualify for repair or replacement under the applicable portion of the plan.

Continental is the strongest all-around choice for a driver who values a single package with mileage coverage on eligible models, a short satisfaction window, early road-hazard protection and roadside help. The trade-off is that the most impressive numbers are conditional: the model, purchase channel and plan rules must all line up.

Which brand has the longest mileage warranty?
Continental has the highest published ceiling in this comparison—up to 80,000 miles—but only on select replacement products. It is not accurate to say that every Continental tire lasts 80,000 miles under warranty.
Michelin and Goodyear both require a model-by-model check. Their brand names alone do not tell you whether a tire has a 40,000-, 60,000- or higher mileage promise, or whether it has no mileage warranty. Compare the exact model designation, size, load index and speed rating printed on the quote or receipt. A mileage warranty can also be reduced or voided by failing to rotate the tires at the required intervals, using mismatched tires or allowing an alignment problem to produce irregular wear.

Does Continental cover road hazards?
Yes, its Total Confidence Plan provides a 12-month road-hazard replacement benefit for eligible Continental passenger and light-truck replacement tires, subject to the plan conditions. That protection is broader than the standard U.S. Michelin terms and the cited Goodyear highway auto and light-truck warranty, both of which exclude road-hazard injury.
Road-hazard coverage should not be confused with roadside assistance. The former concerns the tire’s damage and replacement; the latter concerns getting help after a flat. A roadside call does not by itself approve a warranty claim.
Are Michelin tires covered for punctures?
Not by the standard U.S. workmanship-and-materials warranty summarized here. A puncture caused by a nail, screw, pothole or other road hazard is normally excluded even when the tire is otherwise within its six-year or usable-tread period. A retailer may sell a separate road-hazard policy, but that is a different contract and its terms must be checked independently.
Is Goodyear’s warranty prorated?
Yes. The cited replacement warranty allows a comparable new tire free during the applicable free-replacement phase and on a prorated basis afterward, until six years from purchase or 2⁄32-inch treadwear, whichever comes first. The customer also remains responsible for charges that the warranty does not cover, such as mounting, balancing, taxes or other service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can void or limit any of these warranties?
The brands use different wording, but the recurring duties are similar. A claim is at risk when the owner cannot show proper use, maintenance or purchase history.
- Inflation: Check pressures with a reliable gauge when the tires are cold and use the vehicle manufacturer’s placard, not the maximum pressure molded into the sidewall.
- Rotation: Follow the interval specified for the exact model. Keep dated service invoices or retailer records.
- Alignment and suspension: Repair worn steering, suspension or wheel components before they create irregular wear.
- Load and speed: Stay within the tire’s load index and the vehicle’s gross axle and vehicle ratings; overloading is an express exclusion in the cited Goodyear terms and a common basis for denial elsewhere.
- Repairs: Do not rely on an improper plug, patch or sidewall repair. Retain the repair invoice and have the tire inspected.
- Use: Racing, misuse, accidents, vandalism and unusual operating conditions are generally outside a defect or treadwear promise.
- Documentation: Keep the original receipt, tire identification numbers, model and size, installation date and maintenance records.
How to make a warranty claim
Use this sequence for a defect, premature wear or a road-hazard event. The exact forms differ, but skipping an inspection or losing the purchase record can delay the decision.

- Stop driving if the tire is unsafe. A bulge, exposed cord, sudden pressure loss or sidewall cut requires a spare or roadside service rather than a drive to the retailer.
- Photograph the condition. Take clear pictures of the tread, sidewall, damage, treadwear indicators and the DOT identification number before the tire is discarded.
- Gather records. Bring the purchase receipt, vehicle mileage at installation, rotation and alignment invoices, repair records and any road-hazard or trial paperwork.
- Return to an authorized or participating retailer. Ask for a written inspection that identifies whether the cause is a manufacturing defect, road hazard, maintenance issue or mechanical problem.
- Match the claim to the right benefit. A defect claim, treadwear claim, road-hazard claim and satisfaction return can have different time limits and forms. Do not submit a puncture as a workmanship claim when the warranty expressly excludes road hazards.
- Confirm the adjustment. Before authorizing a replacement, ask whether the remedy is free or prorated and which charges remain yours. Get the calculation in writing.
- Keep the replacement paperwork. Record the new tire’s identification number, installation date and the warranty booklet supplied with it. A replacement tire may have its own adjustment period under the current terms.
How to choose when the warranties point in different directions
Choose Continental for bundled protection
Select Continental when a 60-day trial, early road-hazard replacement and roadside assistance matter as much as treadwear. Confirm that the exact model carries the advertised mileage figure and that the seller participates in the plan.
Choose Michelin for a specific model’s defect and treadwear record
Select Michelin when the tire’s model-specific mileage promise, performance characteristics and six-year-or-usable-tread defect term fit your driving. Budget separately for punctures and impact damage because the standard U.S. warranty excludes them.
Choose Goodyear for a straightforward highway replacement framework
Select Goodyear when you want a clearly stated six-year/2⁄32-inch endpoint for an eligible highway auto or light-truck replacement tire and accept that road hazards are excluded. Verify the exact model’s tread-life document before treating any mileage figure as guaranteed.

A warranty is easier to use when the selling retailer can inspect the tire, retrieve the purchase record and submit the claim. Ask who performs the inspection, whether the store is an authorized or participating outlet and which country-specific booklet governs the sale. A lower advertised price can be less valuable if the purchase cannot be documented or the seller does not handle adjustments.
Important limits on the comparison
These are published U.S. terms unless a section specifically identifies the United States and Canada. Warranty language can change by country, exact tire model, size, replacement versus original-equipment status, retailer and purchase date. Original-equipment tires installed by a vehicle manufacturer may have a different warranty from replacement tires bought later.
Before paying, read the current manufacturer warranty booklet for the exact tire and retain a copy with your receipt. Confirm the free-replacement period, prorating formula, treadwear eligibility, rotation interval, road-hazard definition, trial-return procedure and roadside limits. If the booklet conflicts with a salesperson’s verbal promise, rely on the written terms and ask the retailer to resolve the discrepancy before installation.
Verdict
For the widest set of stated benefits, Continental wins this three-way comparison: its plan is the only one here that combines an advertised mileage ceiling up to 80,000 miles on select products with a 60-day satisfaction trial, 12-month road-hazard replacement and roadside assistance. Michelin is the better fit for buyers focused on a particular model’s workmanship and mileage terms who can self-insure against punctures. Goodyear is a sensible choice for drivers who value a clear six-year-or-2⁄32-inch endpoint on an eligible highway tire and do not expect road-hazard coverage. In every case, the exact tire document—not the brand name alone—determines what you can claim.
