The Mercedes-Benz CLK designo by Giorgio Armani was a limited, design-led edition of the CLK 500 Cabriolet, not an Armani-designed coupe or a current model. Mercedes-Benz presented the special series at the 2004 Paris motor show and announced a worldwide limit of 100 cars. Its distinction was a restrained sand-and-ebony palette and a mix of leather, technical fabric and aged-look metal, applied to the second-generation CLK convertible.
What was the Mercedes-Benz CLK designo by Giorgio Armani?
It was a special series of the Mercedes-Benz CLK 500 Cabriolet, created through the automaker’s designo program. The project grew out of a Mercedes-Benz and Giorgio Armani collaboration first shown as a design car in 2003; the production special followed at the 2004 International Motor Show in Paris. Mercedes-Benz announced that the production series would be limited to 100 vehicles worldwide. That figure is the edition’s stated production limit, not a verified count of cars built or surviving today. Mercedes-Benz’s project description and its CLK history distinguish the design collaboration from the later production special.
How did the design collaboration develop?
The first joint initiative between Mercedes-Benz and Armani was a design car developed in 2003. The contemporary announcement described the work as an exchange between automotive and fashion design and said a limited production version would be available to order through designo. Mercedes-Benz later recorded the production edition as a 100-car CLK 500 Cabriolet series presented in Paris in 2004; the show car and the production series are related stages, not the same event or proof of identical availability.
Mercedes-Benz says the design work ran from May to September 2003. Giorgio Armani developed it in close collaboration with Verena C. Kloos, then managing director of DaimlerChrysler Advanced Design Italia in Como. In the 2003 joint-project announcement, Armani said: “Mercedes-Benz has justifiably achieved an outstanding reputation for the quality, style and elegance of its cars. It has been very interesting for me to see the great similarities between our design philosophies and our approaches to work.” The statement was reproduced in a contemporary report, not given in a current interview. The 2003 announcement and quotation provide the original collaboration context.

What made the Armani edition different?
The changes were chiefly visual and tactile rather than mechanical. The concept translated Armani’s subdued palette and material choices into the CLK Cabriolet’s exterior and cabin.
- Exterior: A satin-matte sand finish with a slight green cast, complemented by glossy sand-colored details and ebony accents.
- Soft top: A specially made, color-matched high-tech fabric roof.
- Cabin materials: Saddle-brown leather paired with finely textured, sportswear-inspired technical fabric. A contemporary report describes the seats as combining saddle leather with three-dimensional technical cloth.
- Trim: Aged-look metal and leather details in place of conventional wood and chrome, according to Mercedes-Benz’s description.
The emphasis was on contrast in texture and finish rather than conspicuous ornament: matte paint, technical cloth, leather and subdued metal surfaces formed a coordinated design language. Mercedes-Benz’s account of the project describes the finish and material choices.

What car was underneath the design changes?
The special series was based on the CLK 500 Cabriolet, part of the second-generation 209-series CLK. Mercedes-Benz says the CLK Cabriolet became available in spring 2003. A contemporary 2004 report lists the CLK 500’s V8 output as 306 PS and its 0–100 km/h time as 6.2 seconds. These are period figures reported for the underlying CLK 500 Cabriolet, not evidence of a separate performance upgrade for the Armani edition. The contemporary CLK 209-series report is the source for those specifications.
What was the original price?
The same 2004 report gives a German factory price of €86,884 and says deliveries were expected from spring 2005. The price is a period German-market figure, not a present-day valuation or an inflation-adjusted amount. The cited report does not establish current asking prices, auction results or a rarity premium for the Armani edition. The period report is the source for the price and expected delivery timing.

How rare was it compared with the wider CLK range?
The 100-car limit applies to the Armani special series. Mercedes-Benz’s separate production totals describe the broader 209-series CLK: 240,878 coupes built from 2002 to 2008 and 140,139 cabriolets produced from 2003 to 2009. Those series-wide figures do not indicate how many Armani editions were made beyond the stated limit, nor how many remain on the road today. Mercedes-Benz’s model history gives the production totals and the edition limit.
