The Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ are the closest Miata alternatives if you want a driver-focused, rear-wheel-drive sports car but need a fixed roof and occasional rear seats. Choose the Ford Mustang EcoBoost for substantially more power, the Volkswagen Golf GTI for hatchback practicality, or the 2026 Honda Prelude for a newer hybrid sporty hatchback format. None reproduces the Miata’s exact combination of two-seat roadster layout, compactness and open-air driving, so the right choice depends on which part of the formula matters most.
What the 2026 Mazda Miata sets as the baseline
Any alternative comparison starts with what you would be giving up. Mazda’s 2026 MX-5 Miata remains a two-seat roadster with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Its engine has a 7,500-rpm redline, and a six-speed manual is standard. Those specifications come from Mazda North American Operations’ January 27, 2026 U.S. announcement, which describes the model year’s changes as targeted interior refinement while retaining the roadster’s established character: Mazda’s 2026 pricing and packaging announcement.

Manual and automatic availability
The 2026 trim structure makes the transmission choice unusually clear. Sport and Club are manual-only. Grand Touring can be ordered with either the six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. If an automatic Miata is essential, the Grand Touring is the trim to investigate; if you want the least expensive entry point or a Club, plan on driving a manual.
Soft top versus RF retractable fastback
The Miata is offered as a conventional soft top or an RF retractable fastback. Mazda says the RF roof opens or closes in about 13 seconds. Both remain two-seat cars, so choosing the RF changes the roof experience rather than adding passenger capacity.

2026 U.S. starting MSRP
The following are Mazda’s 2026 U.S. starting MSRPs. They are not out-the-door prices: destination and handling, taxes, title, dealer charges and other fees are extra, and selling prices vary by dealer and location. Mazda lists a $1,315 destination and handling charge, or $1,360 in Alaska.
| 2026 Miata version | Starting MSRP | Roof and transmission note |
|---|---|---|
| Sport soft top | $30,430 | Soft top; manual-only |
| Club soft top | $33,930 | Soft top; manual-only |
| Grand Touring soft top | $35,730 | Soft top; six-speed manual or six-speed automatic |
| Grand Touring RF | $38,450 | Retractable fastback; six-speed manual or six-speed automatic |
| Club RF | $41,900 | Retractable fastback; manual-only |
These figures are tied to Mazda’s 2026 announcement and exclude the charges noted above. Check the live configurator and a local dealer for current inventory, destination charges and transaction pricing before treating any number as a purchase quote.
The closest format change: Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ
The GR86 and BRZ are mechanically related rear-wheel-drive coupes and the most direct alternatives in this group. A 2025 Edmunds comparison provided to The Associated Press lists 228 horsepower, manual or automatic transmissions and more passenger and cargo space than the Miata. Their fixed roofs eliminate open-air driving, but the extra seats and enclosed cargo area make them easier to use as one-car households. The comparison covers 2025 models, not current 2026 offers: the Associated Press article provided by Edmunds.

Choose the GR86 when your priority is a compact, rear-drive sports-car layout with a usable back seat behind the front occupants. The 228-hp engine gives it more output than the Miata, and the choice of manual or automatic lets you keep a three-pedal setup without accepting a roadster body style. The fixed roof adds weather protection and makes the car more practical for carrying items than a two-seat convertible.

The rear seats should be viewed realistically. The source describes more passenger and cargo space than the Miata, but the comparison does not establish that they are comfortable for adults on long trips. Treat them as occasional passenger seats or as an extension of the cargo area, then verify the fit of child seats, passengers or gear at a dealer.
Subaru BRZ: the closely related second choice
The BRZ uses the same basic alternative formula: rear-wheel drive, a 228-hp engine and manual or automatic transmission choices in the 2025 comparison. It is also a fixed-roof coupe with more passenger and cargo room than a Miata. The practical decision between BRZ and GR86 is therefore less about the fundamental layout than about each brand’s trim availability, equipment, styling, dealer support and local price.
Do not assume a BRZ is a roadster with extra seats. You lose the Miata’s open cabin and gain an enclosed coupe body. If that trade is acceptable, the BRZ belongs on the same short list as the GR86 rather than in the larger, more powerful pony-car category.
GR86 and BRZ versus the Miata
| Model | Body and seating concept | Drive layout | Power or transmission details established by the cited source | What changes from a Miata |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata | Two-seat roadster; soft top or RF retractable fastback | Not stated in the cited Mazda release | 181 hp; six-speed manual standard; Grand Touring also offers a six-speed automatic | Open-air, two-seat format |
| 2025 Toyota GR86 | Fixed-roof coupe with rear seats and more passenger/cargo space | Rear-wheel drive | 228 hp; manual or automatic | More interior utility, no open roof |
| 2025 Subaru BRZ | Fixed-roof coupe with rear seats and more passenger/cargo space | Rear-wheel drive | 228 hp; manual or automatic | More interior utility, no open roof |
Car and Driver’s 2026 affordable-sports-car ranking places the Miata first, GR86 second and BRZ third. Its methodology combines roughly 200 data points, instrumented testing and editorial driving impressions, so the list is an editorial ranking rather than a controlled head-to-head test of every vehicle here: Car and Driver’s 2026 affordable-sports-car ranking.

Choose the Mustang EcoBoost when power matters more than Miata scale
The 2025 Ford Mustang EcoBoost is the alternative for shoppers who hear “sports car” and want a stronger power-and-style statement rather than the Miata’s lightweight, compact roadster experience. The 2025 Edmunds comparison rates the EcoBoost at 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque and describes a 10-speed automatic. Those are 2025 model-year figures, not a current quote for a 2026 vehicle.
This is a different kind of upgrade. More output does not make the Mustang a closer Miata substitute. The Mustang is larger and more power-oriented, while the Miata’s appeal is the immediacy and playfulness of a small roadster. Select the Mustang if acceleration reserve, classic pony-car styling and a larger-car presence outrank minimal size and open-air simplicity.
- Best reason to switch: 315 hp and 350 lb-ft in the 2025 comparison.
- Main compromise: a larger, more powerful character instead of a compact roadster formula.
- Transmission detail: the cited 2025 comparison describes a 10-speed automatic.
Choose the Volkswagen Golf GTI for usable hatchback practicality
The Golf GTI answers a different question: how can a driver have a fun car without giving up a useful hatchback? In the 2025 Edmunds comparison, the GTI has 241 horsepower, front-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic. Its passenger and cargo-friendly hatchback body make it easier to use for commuting, errands and everyday equipment than a two-seat Miata.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat practicality comes with two decisive format changes. The GTI is front-wheel drive rather than rear-wheel drive, and the comparison describes it as automatic-only. It is therefore not the choice for someone specifically seeking a manual sports car or rear-drive balance. It is the better fit when carrying people and cargo every day matters more than an open roof or a lightweight roadster feel.

Consider the 2026 Honda Prelude for a broader hybrid sporty hatchback
The 2026 Honda Prelude is the newest-format option in this shortlist. Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking describes it as a hybrid sporty hatchback and states that it does not offer a manual transmission. The same ranking page lists a starting price of $43,295. Confirm the current equipment, availability and transaction price for the exact vehicle you are considering.
The Prelude is not a lightweight roadster or a direct coupe substitute. Its appeal is a broader blend of hybrid power, sporty intent and hatchback practicality. Put it on your list when those attributes matter more than a three-pedal transmission, a two-seat cabin or the smallest possible sports-car footprint.
- Best reason to switch: hybrid power and a practical hatchback-oriented format.
- Main compromise: no manual transmission according to the 2026 ranking, and a format that is not a lightweight roadster.
- Price reference: $43,295 starting price listed by Car and Driver for the 2026 ranking page.
How the alternatives differ on the questions that actually matter
There is no single “best” replacement because each car preserves a different part of the Miata idea. Use these distinctions before comparing trim packages.

Do you want open-air driving?
Only the Miata in this group is a two-seat roadster with a soft top or retractable fastback roof. The GR86, BRZ and Mustang are fixed-roof cars, while the GTI and Prelude use practical hatchback formats. If lowering the roof is central to why you want a Miata, none of the alternatives is a like-for-like replacement.

- Detailed Replica: With intricate details like the headlights, taillights, and interior, this die-cast captures the essence of the real car
- Compact Size: Measuring approximately 3 inches long, this 1:64 scale model is sized for play or display
Do you need rear seats or more cargo space?
The GR86 and BRZ add rear seats and more passenger/cargo space while retaining rear-wheel drive. The GTI and Prelude go further toward everyday utility with hatchback bodies. The Mustang is the larger, power-focused option, but the supplied comparison does not establish a directly comparable cargo measurement, so judge its practicality in person.
Is a manual transmission essential?
The Miata keeps a six-speed manual standard, with an automatic limited to Grand Touring. The GR86 and BRZ offer manual or automatic transmissions in the 2025 comparison. The cited GTI comparison describes a seven-speed automatic only, the Mustang comparison describes a 10-speed automatic, and Car and Driver says the 2026 Prelude lacks a manual. For a new three-pedal car, start with the Miata, GR86 or BRZ.
Do you want more power, or a lighter-feeling experience?
Measured horsepower favors the alternatives: 228 hp for the 2025 GR86/BRZ comparison, 241 hp for the 2025 GTI, and 315 hp plus 350 lb-ft for the 2025 Mustang EcoBoost, compared with the Miata’s 181 hp. Those figures do not measure steering response, seating position or the sense of agility that draws people to a small roadster. Choose by the experience you value rather than assuming the largest output is automatically the best Miata substitute.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A practical decision path
- Start with the roof. If open-air driving is non-negotiable, stay with the Miata’s soft top or RF format. If you prefer weather protection, continue to the coupes and hatchbacks.
- Count the seats you will actually use. For occasional rear passengers or extra gear, investigate the GR86 and BRZ. For regular passenger and cargo duties, compare the GTI and Prelude’s hatchback layouts.
- Set the transmission requirement. Choose among the Miata, GR86 and BRZ if you require a manual based on the cited specifications. Treat the GTI, Mustang and Prelude as automatic-focused choices under the source descriptions.
- Choose your power priority. The Mustang is the clear outlier for the cited 2025 horsepower and torque figures. The GR86 and BRZ add output over the Miata without moving into the Mustang’s power-focused category.
- Check the actual price, fees and supply. Miata MSRP excludes destination and other charges, and the alternative figures come from different model years and sources. Verify the exact trim, destination charge, dealer price and local inventory before comparing monthly payments.
- Test the physical fit. Sit in the car, inspect sightlines, try the rear seats where applicable and measure the cargo you carry. Published descriptions establish the broad formats, not whether your child seat, luggage or sports equipment will fit.
Pricing context: avoid mixing model years
The 2025 Edmunds comparison listed historical starting prices of $30,715 for the Miata, $31,135 for the GR86 and $32,380 for the BRZ. Those numbers describe 2025 models and should not be presented as current pricing. Mazda’s 2026 Sport soft-top MSRP is $30,430 before destination and other fees, but a lower or higher sticker does not make it a direct price comparison with a 2025 coupe.
For current shopping, keep three checks together: model year, trim and location. A national MSRP is not an out-the-door quote, and the supplied sources do not establish local transaction prices, insurance costs, maintenance-cost differences, reliability forecasts or dealer availability for any of these cars.
What the available rankings and comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
The Edmunds/AP article is useful because it puts the Miata, GR86, BRZ, Mustang EcoBoost and GTI into one 2025 budget-performance comparison. Its prices and specifications are historical model-year data. Car and Driver’s 2026 list is useful for current-category context and places the Miata, GR86, BRZ and Prelude in that displayed order, using roughly 200 data points plus instrumented testing and editorial impressions. Neither source turns the alternatives into interchangeable cars, and neither supplies a complete ownership-cost or local-market forecast.
Use the comparisons to narrow the format, then make the final decision with a current window sticker, a local drive and a cargo-and-seat check. That process prevents a high-horsepower coupe or practical hatchback from being labeled a Miata replacement when it solves a different problem.
Quick Recap
Bottom-line recommendations by driver
- Closest overall change: Toyota GR86 or Subaru BRZ. You retain rear-wheel drive and a driver-focused coupe layout while gaining rear seats and more space, but you lose the open roof.
- Best if power is the priority: Ford Mustang EcoBoost. The cited 2025 figures are 315 hp and 350 lb-ft, but its larger pony-car character is intentionally unlike the Miata’s compact roadster experience.
- Best for daily practicality: Volkswagen Golf GTI. Its hatchback body and useful interior come with front-wheel drive and automatic-only transmission in the 2025 comparison.
- Best for hybrid-oriented, practical sportiness: 2026 Honda Prelude. It is a broader hybrid hatchback choice, not a manual, lightweight roadster substitute.
- Best if the roof and two-seat roadster experience are the reason you are shopping: stay with the 2026 Miata and choose the soft top or RF according to your roof preference.
