Maruti Suzuki’s hatchback sales rose 41% in the first half of FY2026–27, covering April to September 2026, according to Autocar India’s account of the company’s half-yearly sales briefing. The reported growth applies to the hatchback segment—not to Maruti Suzuki’s total sales—and the official September release does not independently verify the six-month rate.
What the reported 41% growth covers
Autocar India reported the 41% increase for Maruti Suzuki hatchback sales in H1 FY2026–27 compared with April–September of the prior year. The figure was attributed to the company’s half-yearly briefing and Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer, marketing and sales. It is a reported segment-growth figure, not a rate recalculated from an official six-month model-wise sales table.
Banerjee said: “When everyone was talking about only the SUVs, the hatch has also grown by 41%.” He also described the result as “not a one-month wonder.” Both statements were quoted by Autocar India in its October 2, 2026 report.

What happened in September?
For September 2026, Autocar India reported 91,887 units across Maruti’s mini, small and mid-hatchback groups, up 24% year on year. The publication identifies Alto, S-Presso and Celerio as mini models; WagonR, Swift and Dzire among small hatchbacks; and Baleno as a mid-hatchback.

That monthly hatchback figure is distinct from Maruti Suzuki India Limited’s company-wide September sales release, which reports 236,013 total units. The official release breaks that total into 185,252 domestic sales, 6,542 sales to other original equipment manufacturers and 44,219 exports. Hatchbacks versus SUVs: compare the same period
For H1 FY2026–27, Autocar India also reported 56% growth in SUV sales, compared with the reported 41% rise for hatchbacks. These are company-briefing rates for the same six-month window as reported by the publication; they should not be compared as though they were September-only figures or total-market statistics.

How Maruti explained the improvement
Autocar India reported that Maruti linked part of the wider sales improvement to GST rate changes introduced in September 2025. That is the company’s explanation as relayed by the publication, not a measured estimate showing how much of the hatchback increase the tax changes caused.
Maruti’s April 2026 production release lists some of the model and category names, including Alto and S-Presso in the mini group and Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and WagonR among compact models.
