Stellantis Patent Proposes an EV That Can Release Its Battery and Move Away

A Stellantis-related patent application describes releasing an EV’s high-voltage battery and switching to low-voltage power to move away—but gives no distance and is not a production feature.

A 2026 patent application from FCA US LLC describes an electrified vehicle that could disconnect and release its high-voltage battery, then use a low-voltage battery to move a predetermined distance away. It is a proposed system—not a demonstrated emergency procedure or a production feature—and the application does not say how far the vehicle could travel.

What the Stellantis patent proposes

The U.S. application, titled “HIGH-VOLTAGE BATTERY QUICK RELEASE SYSTEM FOR VEHICLE,” names FCA US LLC as the applicant and was published September 17, 2026. It sets out a sequence intended to separate an electrified vehicle from its high-voltage battery and move the vehicle away from the released pack.

  1. A person activates a quick-release switch. The application describes possible switches in the cabin and in the trunk, the latter accessible to someone outside the vehicle.
  2. A controller electrically disconnects the high-voltage battery and changes the motor’s power source to the vehicle’s low-voltage battery.
  3. A mechanical release decouples the high-voltage pack from the vehicle.
  4. The low-voltage battery powers an electric motor to move the vehicle a “predetermined distance away” from the battery.

That last phrase is the application’s wording; it gives no numerical distance. The sequence describes a patent concept, not a procedure owners can perform with an ordinary 12-volt battery.

How the battery could be released

The application describes two mechanical approaches. It does not report comparative tests or establish that either approach has been installed in a consumer vehicle.

SafeAMP 12V 9.5Ah Battery for Ride-On Toys, Red 2-Pin
  • IMPORTANT: RED 2-PIN CONNECTOR REQUIRED – This battery ONLY works with the red 2-pin connector shown in the product photos. Many ride-on toys use similar-looking connectors that are not compatible. Compare your connector carefully before purchasing.
  • IMPORTANT: VERIFY BATTERY SIZE BEFORE PURCHASE – Battery dimensions are 5.9 x 2.5 x 3.9 inches (151 x 65 x 99 mm). Measure your existing battery and battery compartment before ordering. This battery may not fit all ride-on vehicles.
  • HIGHER 9.5AH CAPACITY FOR LONGER PLAYTIME – Premium sealed lead acid battery provides extended runtime compared to many standard 7AH batteries while delivering reliable power for compatible ride-on vehicles.
  • INCLUDES REPLACEABLE 40A FUSE HARNESS – Includes SafeAMP 12V 9.5AH SLA battery, red 2-pin connector harness, and replaceable 40-amp fuse for added protection and convenient installation.
  • DESIGNED FOR COMPATIBLE 12V RIDE-ON VEHICLES – Intended as a replacement battery for ride-on toys using the red 2-pin connector and requiring a battery measuring approximately 151 x 65 x 99 mm.

Could a 12-volt battery really move an EV?

The application proposes switching the motor to a low-voltage battery, but it does not explain how that supply would deliver useful traction power in practice. The Auto Wire’s October 2, 2026 report highlights that unanswered engineering question. The patent includes an illustrative vehicle example with a 16-kWh lithium-ion traction pack, a 12-volt battery and a rear motor; those details are an example in the application, not a demonstration of drive-away performance.

Without a stated distance or demonstrated operating conditions, there is no sound basis for assigning the concept a drive-away range. Claims of a specific distance should not be mistaken for a figure in the patent.

What problem is it meant to address—and what it does not prove

The application’s background discusses rare high-voltage battery thermal events and the possibility that a vehicle could become a total loss when the battery remains attached. It says: “In such scenarios the vehicle occupants can safely exit the vehicle. However, as the battery system is coupled to the vehicle, some thermal events can potentially lead to the vehicle being a total loss.” This is wording from the patent application, not a quotation from a named executive or engineer.

The proposal is to separate the battery and move the vehicle away. The application does not establish that doing so would prevent injuries, stop a battery fire, make the released pack safe, or work in actual emergency conditions. It describes a response concept, not verified safety performance.

Is Stellantis putting this in a production car?

Current reporting has not identified a production vehicle using the system or an announcement that it will be offered. The Auto Wire’s October 2, 2026 coverage treats the filing as a patent proposal, not a production commitment. A patent application records proposed claims and examples; by itself, it is not proof of a working prototype, retail feature or scheduled launch.

For now, the meaningful distinction is between what the application describes—a quick release, a switch to low-voltage power and movement over an unspecified predetermined distance—and what has been demonstrated or announced. The latter has not been established by the cited reporting.
