The Maruti Grand Vitara’s mileage depends more on its powertrain and route than on the badge alone. Maruti Suzuki’s 2022 figures quote 27.97 km/l for the Intelligent Electric (Strong) Hybrid and up to 21.11 km/l for the Progressive Smart Hybrid. In Autocar India’s 29 July 2025 comparison, a front-wheel-drive Strong Hybrid averaged 22.08 km/l, while a petrol automatic averaged 13.45 km/l. Those are different evidence classes: a certified figure, a defined road test and an individual owner’s result should never be treated as interchangeable.
Grand Vitara mileage at a glance
The table separates the manufacturer’s certified ratings from Autocar India’s measured results. Autocar’s city and highway figures came from one controlled comparison, not from every Grand Vitara variant or every Indian road.

Maruti’s later April 2025 update continued to describe a range including Strong Hybrid, ALLGRIP Select and Smart Hybrid models. Equipment, transmissions and availability can change, so confirm the exact variant on the current official model page before buying.
What each mileage number actually tells you
Certified mileage is a laboratory benchmark
The 27.97 km/l and up-to-21.11 km/l figures came from Maruti Suzuki India Limited’s 2022 launch communication. They are useful for comparing the manufacturer’s tested configurations under a standardised certification cycle. They do not promise that the same car will return that number in Bengaluru traffic, on a long expressway run, with a full passenger load or with the air conditioner running continuously.

Certification figures also belong to a particular powertrain and test configuration. A Strong Hybrid e-CVT rating cannot be applied to a Smart Hybrid manual, a CNG version or an ALLGRIP model. Even within one family, wheel size, equipment, software calibration, tyre condition and model-year changes can affect consumption.
A road test is a defined experiment, not a national average
Autocar India’s 29 July 2025 comparison filled both tanks to the brim before and after driving. The cars used manufacturer-recommended tyre pressures, followed fixed city and highway loops in and around Navi Mumbai, ran the air conditioning and other electrical equipment as needed, and periodically swapped drivers. That method makes the two test cars directly comparable under those conditions. It does not turn the result into a guarantee for every owner.
The test’s ARAI column is the published certification rating, while the city, highway and average columns are measured fill-to-fill results. Keeping those columns separate prevents a common mistake: quoting a certified number as though it were a repeatable daily commute.

Your number is shaped by traffic density, average speed, gradients, idling, tyre pressure, passenger and luggage weight, fuel quality, weather, air-conditioner use and driving style. A single dashboard estimate can also differ from a brim-to-brim calculation. Treat one unusually high or low tank as a clue, not a representative statistic. Several fill-to-fill measurements on similar routes are more useful.
Strong Hybrid: why city mileage can beat highway mileage
In Autocar’s comparison, the front-wheel-drive Strong Hybrid delivered its better result on the urban loop and its lower result on the highway loop, with the combined figure between the two. Autocar’s earlier 1 October 2022 test reported the same city and highway values independently. The outlet observed that the car could run in electric mode when operating conditions were met and the battery had adequate charge, while highway speeds led to more engine use.
That pattern is logical for a self-charging hybrid. Low-speed traffic provides repeated opportunities to pull away electrically, lift off the accelerator and recover energy while slowing. A steady high-speed run removes many of those opportunities and increases aerodynamic demand. It is not a promise that every city route will beat every highway route: steep roads, severe congestion, cold starts, heavy loads and very high urban speeds can reverse the result.

How the Strong Hybrid battery is charged
Maruti’s official FAQ explains that the Strong Hybrid does not need to be plugged in. Its answer begins, “Relax, you don’t have to do anything.” The vehicle charges the battery during normal driving, including energy recovered while slowing and braking, and manages when to use the engine or electric motor automatically. Regenerative braking converts braking energy into electricity stored in the battery.

There is therefore no useful reason to chase a particular battery display level, force EV operation or invent a charging routine. The control system is designed to balance propulsion, regeneration and battery protection. Use the car normally and allow its hybrid controls to decide when electric assistance is appropriate.
What ECO mode does—and what it does not prove
Maruti describes ECO mode as prioritising fuel efficiency over performance. In practice, that means a gentler response to accelerator inputs and a calibration intended to discourage unnecessary energy use. The reviewed figures do not quantify a Grand Vitara-specific percentage saving from ECO mode, so it should be treated as a driving aid rather than a guaranteed mileage upgrade.
Smart Hybrid petrol: why the result is lower in traffic
The petrol automatic in Autocar’s 2025 comparison returned a substantially lower combined result than the tested Strong Hybrid. Its urban loop was the weaker of its two routes, while the highway loop was better. Frequent starts, stops and idling make a conventional petrol powertrain spend fuel without covering much distance; the Strong Hybrid can use electric assistance and recover some braking energy in those conditions.
The Smart Hybrid system is still able to assist the petrol engine and recuperate energy, but it is not the same system as the Intelligent Electric Hybrid. Do not use the Strong Hybrid’s city result to estimate a Smart Hybrid automatic, manual, CNG or ALLGRIP vehicle. The 2022 release’s “up to” Smart Hybrid figure is a certified ceiling for the stated configuration, not a promise for a traffic-heavy commute.
Choosing a variant when mileage is the priority
Strong Hybrid
- Best suited to buyers who spend substantial time in stop-start urban traffic and value the potential of electric running at low speeds.
- Uses an e-CVT according to Maruti’s 2022 launch release and needs no external charging.
- In the cited road test, its measured city and combined results were materially stronger than those of the petrol automatic.
- Highway consumption still depends on speed, wind, gradients, load and air-conditioner use; hybrid assistance does not eliminate those effects.
Smart Hybrid petrol
- Available in the cited release with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, depending on variant.
- May suit buyers who prefer a conventional petrol driving feel or a lower purchase complexity, but the cited automatic test shows a larger traffic penalty than the Strong Hybrid.
- Do not infer manual, CNG or ALLGRIP mileage from the tested automatic. The supplied evidence does not provide a comparable, controlled result for each of those versions.
ALLGRIP, CNG and other model-year combinations
Maruti’s April 2025 update confirms that the broader range included Strong Hybrid, ALLGRIP Select and Smart Hybrid models, but it does not establish one real-world mileage number for every combination. Four-wheel drive, additional weight, tyre choice, transmission and route can all alter consumption. Check the current specification and certified rating for the exact vehicle, then measure your own usage after delivery.

How to measure your Grand Vitara’s real mileage
A repeatable fill-to-fill method is more informative than a single trip-computer reading. Use the following process whenever you want to establish a baseline or investigate a sudden change.
- Start with a full tank. Fill at the same pump position where practical and stop at the station’s normal automatic cut-off. Record the date, odometer or trip distance, fuel type and variant.
- Check the specified tyre pressures. Use the pressure values shown on the vehicle’s tyre-information label or in the owner’s manual. Do not substitute a generic SUV pressure number.
- Reset the trip meter. Keep a note of passengers, luggage, route mix, average speed, air-conditioner use and unusual idling so that unlike tanks are not compared as though they were identical.
- Drive normally. Do not alter your style merely to produce a headline number. If you are testing a change such as ECO mode, change one variable at a time.
- Refill to the same level. Record the litres dispensed and the trip distance. A brim-to-brim calculation is: kilometres driven divided by litres added.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. Several tanks covering similar routes will reveal a pattern; one tank can be distorted by a different fuel cut-off point, traffic jam, holiday trip or unusually hot weather.
- Separate route types. Keep city commuting, open highway travel and mixed use in separate notes. Combining them hides the reason a number changed.
For a fair comparison between two vehicles, keep fuel station, route, tyre-pressure checks, passenger load and air-conditioner settings as similar as possible. This mirrors the control logic of Autocar’s test without pretending that your roads are the same as Navi Mumbai’s loops.
Ways to improve or preserve fuel economy
Maintain the specified tyre pressure
Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and can make the vehicle feel sluggish. Check pressures when the tyres are cold and use the manufacturer’s specified values for your wheel and load condition. Autocar used manufacturer-recommended pressure in its comparison, but the reviewed sources do not quantify how many kilometres per litre a correction will add. The benefit is preventing an avoidable loss, not claiming a guaranteed percentage.
Use ECO mode when the priority is economy
On a Strong Hybrid, ECO mode is intended to prioritise efficiency over performance. Select it when a softer accelerator response suits the route, especially in routine commuting. Do not expect the same saving on every journey, and do not use it as a substitute for correct tyre pressure, maintenance or sensible speed.
Accelerate smoothly and look ahead
Anticipating a red light, queue or merging vehicle lets you lift earlier instead of accelerating hard and braking immediately. Gentle inputs also give the hybrid system more opportunity to blend electric assistance and regenerative braking. Smooth driving is prudent general advice; the cited sources do not establish a Grand Vitara-specific percentage improvement, so any exact promise would be misleading.
Allow regenerative braking to work
In the Strong Hybrid, progressive lifting and braking can recover energy that would otherwise become heat in the brakes. Look well ahead, maintain a safe following distance and slow naturally where traffic permits. Never coast or delay braking in a way that compromises safety merely to chase an efficiency reading.

Reduce unnecessary load and idling
Remove heavy items that live in the boot, avoid carrying roof-mounted equipment when it is not needed, and switch off the engine rather than waiting for long periods where safe and lawful. Use the air conditioner for comfort and clear visibility; the objective is a sensible, repeatable routine, not discomfort or unsafe driving.

Follow the service schedule and use the correct engine oil, filters and replacement parts for your exact engine and model year. A dragging brake, misaligned wheel, worn tyre or engine fault can reduce economy, but the reviewed manufacturer material does not provide a diagnostic mileage guarantee. If a drop persists after basic checks, an authorised service centre should inspect the vehicle.
Understand E20 compatibility correctly
Maruti’s 2025 update states that the then-updated Grand Vitara models were E20-fuel compliant. Compatibility means the vehicle is designed to operate with petrol containing up to 20% ethanol under the applicable specification. It does not establish that E20 improves mileage, nor does it justify comparing fuel economy from different ethanol blends as though the fuel were identical.

First establish that the change is real. Recalculate from fuel receipts or brim-to-brim fills, then compare several tanks with similar routes and loads. Check the specified tyre pressures, look for a tyre or brake problem, note whether traffic or idling increased, and consider whether a different fuel blend or station was used. A dashboard estimate alone is not enough to diagnose the cause.
If the lower result remains after those checks, record the dates, kilometres, litres, route conditions and any warning lights and ask an authorised service centre for an inspection. The official service channel can check the vehicle; it does not promise a particular mileage figure. Avoid adding an accessory or using an unverified “mileage booster” as a first response, because the reviewed evidence establishes no fuel-economy gain from a specific accessory.

Common mileage questions answered
Is the Strong Hybrid’s real-world mileage close to its claimed figure?
In Autocar India’s defined 2025 comparison, its combined result was below the 27.97 km/l certified rating but still substantially higher than the tested petrol automatic. The gap is expected because certification and road tests use different conditions. Your result will depend on route, speed, climate, load and driving style.

What mileage does the Grand Vitara give in city traffic?
There is no single city number for the whole range. The cited Strong Hybrid test recorded a different city result from the petrol automatic test, and manual, CNG and ALLGRIP versions were not covered by a comparable method. Use the powertrain-specific figures in the table as reference points, then measure your own commute.
Does a Strong Hybrid need to be plugged in?
No. Maruti’s FAQ says the vehicle charges its battery during normal driving through regenerative braking and its hybrid control system. It is not a plug-in charging routine.
Can I force EV mode to increase mileage?
The cited material does not support forcing EV operation or chasing a particular battery state as a mileage technique. Let the vehicle manage electric assistance according to operating conditions and battery charge.

E20 compatibility is documented for the then-updated models in Maruti’s 2025 update. Compatibility is not evidence of a mileage increase. Record fuel type and route when comparing tanks.
Why is my highway figure lower than my city figure?
A hybrid can recover energy and use electric propulsion more often in lower-speed traffic, while sustained high speed keeps the engine working and increases aerodynamic drag. Strong headwinds, high speeds, gradients, roof loads and air-conditioning demand can lower highway economy further. The reverse pattern can occur for a conventional petrol car, as the cited automatic comparison demonstrates.
