LocoMotion Brome-Missisquoi is an active community vehicle-sharing network serving Sutton and nearby communities. Members can request shared cars, electric-assist bikes and trailers, but this is not a staffed rental counter: access depends on registering, contacting the person responsible for a vehicle and coordinating with the local community.
Where does LocoMotion Brome-Missisquoi operate?
The local network names Sutton, Dunham, Frelighsburg, Cowansville and surrounding areas as its service territory. The vehicles shared by members include cars, electric-assist bikes and trailers. The page does not establish that every type of vehicle is available in each community.
Brome-Missisquoi is part of LocoMotion’s broader Estrie expansion, described as developing eight new communities between 2025 and 2027, with Brome-Missisquoi starting in 2026.
How does borrowing a vehicle work?
LocoMotion is organized around local participation, trust and mutual support. Volunteers help new members and coordinate vehicle sharing. Rather than booking instantly from a rental fleet, a member makes a request to the responsible person for the vehicle and arranges an initial contact.

- Find a suitable shared vehicle. Availability depends on what local members contribute and the arrangements for that vehicle.
- Contact the responsible person. Make a request and allow time for a reply; the FAQ says responses may not be immediate.
- Coordinate the handover. Arrange details directly with the responsible person before relying on the vehicle for a trip.
Because requests and handovers rely on people, neither a vehicle nor a quick response is guaranteed. For a trip that cannot be rescheduled, confirm the arrangement before making plans around it.
Can visitors or temporary residents join?
The FAQ says people staying in a participating community for at least 30 days may be accepted even if their permanent address is elsewhere. It asks applicants to provide proof of their permanent address and proof of local accommodation. Acceptance is not automatic; confirm eligibility and documentation with the network.

What does it cost to borrow a car or bike?
LocoMotion’s current cost example is a minimum of C$75 for a same-day Sutton–Montreal round trip using its most economical car model. That is an illustrative trip, not a universal rental rate. The network points members to a calculator for a more precise estimate; check the current estimate and any applicable charges for your own request.
The site says a LocoMotion contribution is under consideration for 2027, so do not treat a future contribution as an established current fee.

Collective electric-assist bike borrowing is stated to be free until 2027. From 2027, the site says a small charge is planned to help cover maintenance for both private and collective bikes. Verify the actual charge when arranging a bike, since fees and availability may change.
When can members borrow an electric-assist bike in Sutton?
LocoMotion says one electric-assist bike has been circulating in Sutton since July 2026. More bikes are being introduced gradually, at a pace the volunteer committee can sustain. The timing depends on local mobilization, funding and recruiting bike sponsors. This milestone does not establish that bikes are currently available in every participating municipality; ask about local inventory before planning a ride.

Claudine, a LocoMotion Brome-Missisquoi member, describes the approach this way: “Car and bike sharing is based on trust—we meet, we hand over the keys, we check in. Plus, with shared bikes, we avoid car trips.” That is her perspective, not a quantified estimate of trips or emissions avoided.

Vehicle sharing and scheduled transit address different needs. LocoMotion connects a member with a particular shared car, bike or trailer through a request and a handover. A bus service follows its own routes, schedule and fare rules, which can make it a better fit when the timetable and destination work for the passenger.

A Town of Sutton notice published July 20, 2023 described an MRC Brome-Missisquoi bus service operating on weekdays by reservation and listed a C$6 fare between municipalities. Those details are historical, not confirmed current service information. Check with the transit provider for today’s routes, reservation rules and fares before relying on them.
