Lemonade has launched Autonomous Car insurance for qualifying Tesla owners using Full Self-Driving (Supervised), pricing each FSD mile at 50% of its human-driven per-mile rate. The product uses customer-authorized Tesla telemetry to separate FSD miles from manual miles—but it does not promise a 50% reduction in the complete policy premium or make a Tesla driverless.
Lemonade has launched Autonomous Car insurance for qualifying Tesla owners who use Full Self-Driving (Supervised). The product uses customer-authorized Tesla vehicle data to distinguish miles driven with FSD engaged from manually driven miles. Lemonade says each qualifying FSD mile is priced at 50% of its human-driven per-mile rate.

That does not mean every customer will receive a 50% reduction on the final insurance bill. The actual effect depends on the mix of FSD and manual miles, the underlying quote, coverage selections, driving profile, underwriting, and state-specific insurance rules. Tesla’s system also remains a supervised driver-assistance feature: the driver must stay attentive and ready to take control.
How Lemonade Autonomous Car insurance works
Lemonade says its product connects directly with Tesla through the Tesla Fleet API, with the customer’s permission. The system automatically tracks the vehicle’s usage and separates:

Lemonade says customers do not need to install a separate tracking device or submit mileage reports manually. Instead, the insurer uses the authorized Tesla integration to apply different per-mile rates. FSD miles are currently priced at half the human-driven per-mile rate, according to Lemonade’s product materials and Q4 2025 shareholder letter.
This is a usage-based insurance model adapted to a vehicle’s software mode. It is not insurance for a legally driverless car, and it does not mean that the vehicle—or its software—is assumed to be responsible for driving without human supervision.
What “50% cheaper” actually means
The headline figure applies to the per-mile rate for qualifying FSD miles, not automatically to the entire policy premium.
For example, a policy could include a mixture of FSD and manual miles. Only the FSD portion would receive the stated reduction. The final price can also reflect liability limits, comprehensive and collision coverage, deductibles, the driver’s record, garaging location, vehicle details, estimated mileage, underwriting decisions, taxes, fees, and state requirements.
A driver who uses FSD for most trips could see a larger effect than someone who uses it occasionally, but Lemonade’s 50% per-mile figure still should not be treated as a guaranteed 50% saving on the policy. The only reliable way to determine the result is to obtain a quote and compare it with equivalent coverage elsewhere.

Where is the product available?
Availability is expanding and should be checked through Lemonade’s live quote process rather than inferred solely from launch announcements.
TechCrunch reported that Lemonade planned to launch Autonomous Car insurance in Arizona on January 26, 2026, followed by Oregon the next month. Lemonade later announced availability in Indiana. The company’s materials have also identified standard Lemonade car-insurance availability in:

Those standard car-insurance states should not automatically be treated as a complete list of states where the Autonomous Car product is available. Lemonade’s current product page describes the autonomous-aware offering as available in select states, with additional states coming. Eligibility is ultimately determined by the live quote flow, the applicable policy form, underwriting, and regulatory approval.
Tesla hardware and software requirements
Lemonade’s product information says a qualifying Tesla must have:
- Hardware 4.0 or newer; and
- Firmware version 2025.44.25.5 or newer.
Lemonade says the firmware update can be obtained through the Tesla app or the vehicle interface. These specifications are important, but they are not a guarantee that every Tesla model or trim meeting them will qualify in every state. Vehicle configuration, the policy form, underwriting, regulatory rules, and the quote process can also affect eligibility.

Why Lemonade says FSD miles deserve a lower rate
Lemonade says its pricing decision is based on data indicating that FSD miles are twice as safe as manual-driving miles. Its product page also repeats Tesla-reported figures including a 52% overall crash reduction, a 14% reduction in highway incidents, and a 63% reduction in non-highway accidents.

Those statements describe Lemonade’s strategy and expectations, rather than a guaranteed industry outcome.
Lemonade versus Tesla Insurance
Tesla Insurance already offers its own FSD-related insurance benefits in some markets. The two approaches are not directly interchangeable, and the larger headline percentage is not enough to identify the cheaper policy.

Tesla’s documentation identifies FSD-related insurance benefits in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia. Tesla says customers generally need at least five miles driven during the relevant 30-day period. The exact benefit and timing can vary by state.

In practical terms, Lemonade describes a mileage-based model, while Tesla describes a discount or premium benefit applied under its own insurance program. A fair comparison requires matching the same driver, vehicle, annual mileage, liability limits, deductibles, comprehensive and collision options, rental coverage, roadside assistance, and payment terms.
Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is not fully driverless
The name of Tesla’s feature can create confusion. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) remains a supervised driver-assistance system. The driver must remain attentive, monitor the road and vehicle behavior, and be prepared to take over immediately.
Lemonade’s launch does not establish that Tesla has transferred liability to Lemonade, Tesla, or the FSD system. It also does not change the driver’s legal or operational responsibility. The insurance product recognizes how the vehicle is being used for pricing purposes; it does not turn a supervised Tesla into a driverless vehicle.

- Confirm state availability. Start a current Lemonade quote and verify that Autonomous Car insurance—not merely standard Lemonade car insurance—is offered where the vehicle is registered and garaged.
- Check the Tesla’s configuration. Confirm Hardware 4.0 or newer and firmware 2025.44.25.5 or newer, then allow for additional vehicle or underwriting requirements.
- Understand the data permission. Review what Tesla data must be authorized through the Fleet API, how it is used for pricing, and what happens if access is withdrawn or interrupted.
- Estimate the driving mix. Consider how often FSD (Supervised) is actually engaged. A 50% reduction on a small share of miles may have a modest effect on the total policy cost.
- Compare complete quotes. Match liability limits, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, deductibles, comprehensive and collision coverage, mileage assumptions, drivers, and optional benefits.
- Compare renewal rules. Ask how rates can change at renewal, how missed telemetry affects pricing, and whether a change in state rules or underwriting can alter eligibility.
- Compare Tesla Insurance separately. Check whether Tesla’s FSD Discount or Safety Score benefit is available in the state and whether the required Safety Score version and mileage threshold apply.
Bottom line for Tesla FSD owners
Lemonade’s launch is significant because it treats assisted-driving usage as a factor that can be priced separately from ordinary manual driving. For eligible customers, the company says FSD miles cost half as much per mile as human-driven miles.

But the useful comparison is not “50% versus 10%.” It is the final price for equivalent coverage after accounting for the customer’s state, Tesla hardware, FSD usage, manual mileage, data permissions, underwriting, deductibles, limits, and renewal terms. Tesla owners should obtain comparable quotes from Lemonade, Tesla Insurance where available, and other insurers before deciding.
